Dumb Question Thread - no flaming or sarcasm allowed

Blown again
I've owned 3 rotaries - 73' RX2, 79' RX7, and my current 05' RX8. My previous RX's ran great and with good maintenance, I got over 100K on each before I was forced to sell for one reason or another. Now, I just had my second engine failure on my RX8 after 40k. I've heard the Renesis is not as reliable.
My questions are:
1) Is this true regarding the reliability?
2) What is the best replacement? (My first was under warranty)
3) Where can I go to find more info? I'm trolling the forum history but a quick answer is needed.
Thanks...

This will answer 1 and 3
https://www.rx8club.com/new-member-f...t-here-202454/
Lots of possible causes for failure.
2) if it was just general low compression, then your cheapest option is a rebuild from a reputable builder. If you had any other major failure, like a seal letting go or you overheated it (which can happen before the factory temperature needle starts moving), then your cheapest option would be buying a reman from Mazmart. A reman from the dealer will be similarly priced (depending on actual markup), but you are screwed if it's doa.

Alright I got a dumb question if someone could give me a little bit of info. I have the P0420 code after installing a midpipe. I bought mazdaedit to kill the code and I just want to be sure I'm doing this right. I have 3 tables for DTC.
DTC List Enabled #1
DTC List Enabled #2
DTC List Opt?
I opened the {DTC List Opt?} table and went to the code 0420 and changed the value to 00 and flashed it. So far today I've not gotten a check engine light. I saw somewhere else on this forum buried somewhere someone removed them from both tables. Just want to be sure I'm changing the right things here. A little insight would be appreciated.
Thanks!

just lower cruising rpm, i think i might be able to get a freebie S15 6th gear pair from a friend of a friend, and they can sit on a shelf for ages until if/when i need to rebuild my transmission and i can just stick it in there while i have it apart. basically it'd just bring down my highway cruising rpm and give a little bump in economy without effecting the ratios i use on track/autox. (nobody will care that it isnt STX legal cause we stay in 2nd anyway) So if it has the same internal race size yadda yadda then it should just slip right in. just wondering if anyone has done something like that.
really id like to get like a .6 ratio but there isnt anything out there, maybe I could make one in the machine shop o_O

Well I had used a 4.777 final drive diff from a later model car and it took 4mpg off the car (20 down to 16 highway) and thats a gearing difference of 7.5% or so, so if i use the .767 instead of the factory .843 that a 10% reduction in engine speed, it might not be as dramatic a gain as the loss was going the other way, but it should be some improvement. My car is stock so at highway cruising speed ive got somewhere around 60-70 horsepower available in 6th and really only need about half that to maintain highway speed. lower revs would put me closer to optimum BSFC one would think. Like basically what Id like is to cruise at 75mph while placing a 75% load on the engine, I think the .767 6th gear would get me the closest to that with off the shelf parts.
I dunno, I'll try it whenever the time comes, if it can be installled i will do so, and I'll let you guys know if it helps.

Or you could prove how much more mature you are than either of those other drivers, and just learn to like what you have for what it is, and not feel that you have to try to prove how fast your wallet is.
There is always someone faster, and it isn't worth getting annoyed over.

You are missing forced induction, a bigger engine, a lot of weight reduction.
The RX-8 isn't a straight line car, and the engine is already very nearly maxed out from the factory. If you want to add power, you have to take extreme and expensive steps to do so.
It isn't what you want to hear, but that doesn't make it not true. Until you learn to accept this, life is going to be rather painful for you with an RX-8.
