Todd, in the future I'll send directly from gmail and choose plain text like you recommended. I have a feeling my email client is somehow causing rich text or html when I have attachments. If you see the problem next time I submit attachments please know I am not trying to send a blank email. Thanks for the patience and the tip.

No problem. Just be sure to use your same email address so we can keep track of the emails.

There are no off the shelf maps for an automatic RX8 so you'll need to have a custom tune created for your RX8.

Check out www.mazdamaniac.com for information on how to get one.

Todd, since we are on the topic... DO weights (like mentioned previously, bodykits, gullwings) affect your choice on clutches and flywheel? eg: heavier weight will be harder on lighter flywheel...

Read ur blog... it was great and very enlightening! Was thinking on the Exedy stage 1 but didnt knw there was a mazdaspeed version. But was not so sure abt the lighter flywheel. Need some input on this.

Who did you buy it from? The only way you can get a base map for the A/T is to buy MMCCS. http://www.mazdamaniac.com/cobb/accessport.htm

Resubmit and we'll go from there.

I got my first set of calibrations. I did not resend after you posted this, but got my calibrations a week later. So you must have done something on your end. If there is a problem with my emails or anything please PM me as I want to make this process as painless as possible for the both of us.

Thanks again for whoever did what they did. Excellent customer service.

I finally got to installing the base map from mazdamaniac on my car and was playing around with data logging as I was doing my drive cycles, and decided to do my first post on rx8 club as I am starting to wonder about the tuning process. If there is a better thread for this question please direct me there, but since I could not really find one, or one where this is explained in non-technical vernacular, I am posting here. Here is my question: what are all of the inputs the ECU does to the car? What I mean is that my common sense tells me that are a few obvious things the car can adjust: the amount of fuel through injectors (obviously within the limits of the injector), the timing.... and, well that's all I can think off (I am not counting the rev limiter, fan turn on point etc, as I don't believe this impacts you AFR). Now I am not saying that the above is simple, I am just trying to understand what Jeff is doing when making those maps. Is this process really about looking at the amount of air my engine is sucking in at any given time and saying: "hey, you can do better with all this air, by spraying more fuel and igniting sooner"?

Though I believe you would have a long and interesting journey learning the details of what is really going on, I have to admit that this last sentence pretty well sums it all up.

(Though, it is a bit like saying cooking is just about heating things and adding salt.)

and if this is the case, please make mine extra rare! (i.e. rich as hell).... if I gave a flying hoot about gas mileage I would be driving a hoda fit....

But seriously, I want to hear "pops" and see flames or something because my cat is coming out as soon as I get my hands on the BHR midpipe... Super stoked about seeing what the hell my baby is doing (data logging), cause we have been engaged for like 3 years now and I could never really completely understand what she feels like.... until i started seeing the STFT values, really cool stuff. Loving the cooking analogy by the way, I will be sure to use that when I will need to explain to my girlfriend why my car smells like gas...

Another question: I have been noticing that my car has an a steady AFR of 15.1-15.2 during idling. I am definetly not an expert but this seems a little too high, is it safe to keep drive it like that?

Totally normal.
I've gotten mine to idle at 17:1!
Anything from 13:1 to 16:1 is "normal".
Don't expect the stoichiometric ratio all the time, especially since a 1/2 of an AFR point is meaningless to start with.

Thanks for the link, this is helpful. Any particular literature you can recommend to further educate? I read some random wiki articles and forum posts here and there, but a lot of them assume some knoweledge from the reader and some of them just flat out contradict each other, most focusing on piston engines. Is there a good "making very nice explosion inside a combustion chamber for dummies" book or something?

Well, Jeff I just wanted to chime in and let you know I submitted my calibration e-mail. It was exactly 6 months since I purchased the AP and I should have been more punctual. So, if I didn't make the deadline, I have no problem paying you again for the service. Hopefully I did everything correctly. Hope everyone have a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

Leo

Dear Jeff,

Do u have experience with Broquet? Have u made maps for 8 that are installed with it?If so, what have ur readings on it tell u?

Should i remove it or leave it and have it act as an Octane Booster. So far my BUTTdyno have revealed there is some fuel saving experienced, but not all the time though and have felt cleaner fuel as engine response is good.

Just awaiting ur opinion on this and my Custom exhaust and will be sending my first calibrations...
