I put a 18,800 btu tube and fin auto trans cooler on my 07 RX8 GT. I run a scangauge and found ATF temp code from a Mazda 6.

That cooler takes 14 deg f outta trans, and that also lowers the engine coolant since they are still connected.

RX8 is just not good to rev, try to drift, etc. Idling car can still get IAT temps of 190 with cooler, but driving at 100 mph and 100 deg f outside my temps were 191 f engine coolant, and 191 fauto trans ATF temp.

You're not going to shoot flames if you still have the catalytic converter.

Check that your fans are working properly and that the catalytic converter is not clogged/broken up inside.

If you're new to these cars, take the time to read the New and Potential Owners thread, it could save you thousands in engine repairs.

 

Revving in neutral in general is bad for any cars. If you are trying to show off occasionally then it's not too too bad, but if you do it on a regular basis then you should stop it. Engines don't like having high revs with almost no load(basically when not in gear).

 

I need to replace a torn vacuum hose that goes from the oil breather neck to the intake. Is that a standard size hose or do I need to order something specific? If it's standard, anyone know the size?

 

I had RX8's when I lived in the UK, but have just got one over here in the USA, a 2011 Sport in red.

I was checking things over once I got it home and was going to change the coils, leads and plugs along with a coolant flush.

Now when I looked at the coils they are not of any type I have seen before with cooling fins and what looks like an after market bracket, now do any of you knowlegeable folks out there know what they are, as in make etc?




I was also pleasantly surprised to find it was riding on Bilstiens

 

Is there any difference? I see oem and aftermarket ones. Read the misfiring section and talks about sticking with oem plugs, but coils can be anything. Is there a difference if I get a cheaper one vs expensive one?

 

Don't buy super cheap unknown ones from ebay or Amazon. NAPA or other local part shops should carry Intermotor or similiar brands with lifetime warranty, for much cheaper than Mazda.

My TCS light has been on for a few weeks now. I drove to work that day perfectly fine, got in the car to go home that afternoon and the light has stayed on ever since. I've lived with it for now, but winter is here in MI, so my procrastination has caught up to me and I need to figure out why this is happening. I've searched the club for a while trying to find an answer on this, but most of the threads I found were people who don't know how to re-calibrate the steering angle sensor after pulling the battery. I also found this thread, but short of the alignment (which I've got scheduled for tomorrow and have probably needed for a while), I'm out of things to check. Has anyone else encountered this? ABS and stability control lights are NOT on and ABS works, so it has to be something specific to the TCS.

05 Touring, 128k, stock wheel/tire size, LED third brake light that has never caused an issue with this.

 

Guys I just bought a new RX8. I need to top up the oil but I don't know if the previous owner used synthetic or mineral oil. I have a can of mineral oil. Can I top it up with that, even if the car has synthetic oil?

 

You can top it up with mineral either way. But, since the car is new to you, changing all fluids that aren't known good is a good idea.

 

Mineral and synthetic are compatible. You can pour whatever into whatever. However, I agree with Loki. Replacing all fluids against an unknown maintenance history is always a best practice.

Is there any magic to how long a rotary can sit and not be driven? Thinking about storage over the winter months in MI.

 

It can sit indefinitely if you take some basic precautions: keep it away from humidity and rodents, add gas treatment to a full tank, put the battery on a trickle charger and pump up the tires and/or park on some cushioning surface like foam insulation. Not different from any other car.

 

Think I heard pros and cons about using a cover for the car = causes humidity, but keeps the car nice and warm and not have snow over the car. So the decision is yours. Oil change before you store it away wont be bad. Add gas to the fuel tank to avoid rust in the fuel line. And what that guy said up there ^.

The battery will run down in a month so put it on a trickle charger. Gas and tires should be fine.
Keeping it away from humidity and rodents always applies.

Just to be clear, are we talking about indoor or outdoor storage?

If you're storing it after driving in winter, wash it and rinse the underside to remove salt.

 

Batteries lose about 1% of their charge per day - just sitting there. Once you're in the low state of charge plate sulfation (that's sometime irreversible) can occur. It's best to keep idle batteries charged (using a trickle charger).

 

Thanks, so trickle charger if i'm not driving it. Garage storage. suggestions on rodents? I guess if I have good seals on the garage not much need to worry about that, generally speaking. I have read dryer sheets keep some away. rags in the exhaust (that need to be removed before driving again, obviously.) I plan to store over winter, but there are times in the summer when life gets busy and the fun car isn't used as often. I wanted to know if there was anything in particular I should be sure to do in the event I expect I may not drive it for awhile.

Guys quick question. I have an S2 with a crappy aftermarket radio. Can I retrofit the Bose speakers from a S1 to a S2? I can buy a S2 Bose headunit off eBay but can't seem to find S2 speakers. eBay is full of S1 Bose speakers though.

 

Bose sucks. Why would you want to do that?

 

I like the stock look. Aftermarket stereos look so out of place.

 

Better to use a battery MAINTAINER, not a trickle charger. Maintainers stop at full charge and maintain that state, tricklers do not !

 

I once measured the output curves of the Bose head unit and found it to be flat. Bose puts their filters in the amps. That means you can use any aftermarket amp and speakers with the head unit, as long as the amp is compatible with differential inputs. Many, if not most, Alpine amps are compatible. There are probably many other compatible amps. You can also use a higher quality LOC to make virtually any amp work with the head unit.

Bose speakers are terrible. Solve your cosmetic issue with the factory HU, and use an amp and speakers of your choice. That approach will yield much better sound.
