The gap between the sparkplug's annode and cathode (base and tip) provides for an electrical arc which forms the spark that ignites the gasoline vapor.

But yeah, the coils basically send the spark to the 'plugs.
And how to change them: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-yourself-forum-73/diy-mazda-ignition-coils-pics-178515/

I plan on doing mine this week. I had to order them since no one around has them.. (see my location)

And your other question, why do coils go bad- The ones that Mazda originally put in the 2004 8's were so crappy even they realized that they had to come out with a better product. I think the ones you get now are the 3rd generation of OEM ignition coils, which is what you should get from a Mazda dealer or any auto parts store, but long story short, they go bad because the part itself sucks. Check out BHR for their ignition kit. I want one but other things need to get fixed on my car first.

My turn. What does AFR stand for, and what numbers are normal? I'm reading things way over my head which is the only way to gain knowledge but I need some help.. lol

AFR stands for Air to Fuel Ratio. It's how much air there is compared to fuel in the combustion chambers. The lower the number the richer the Air/Fuel mixture is. So say the AFR is 15, that means there 15 parts air and 1 part fuel. The AFR sensor in the 8 has a range from 11.1 to 20.4 if I remember correctly.

The number changes depending on throttle position and engine load, but normal readings are 11.1 to 13.0 under wide open throttle, 14.7 while cruising/idling and when you let off in gear it'll go all the way to 20.4

People want to be able to turn on their fog lamps without also having there headlights on.
Otherwise you need to have your headlights on in order to have your fog lamps on.

glad you picked this thread!
it is a diy. It allows the driver to turn the fogs on independently (don't have to have the headlights on). Read up on fog lights, how they work best and why having headlights on simultaneously with fogs defeats the purpose

Not trying to be a grammar hound, just some advice for further posts you may create.

If it's glaring evident that you do not care about the quality of your post then it's obvious you don't care about how hard it is to read for the person reviewing your post.

Try breaking your post up in to logical blocks, makes it easier to follow. (otherwise it's a wall of text)

Also it's not hard to start a sentence with a capital letter. Most cells phones will automatically insert a period after a double space and capitalize the first letter of the next word

Which reminds me, posting from a cell phone is not an excuse.

Just say'n.

Congratulations on finding this thread, this puts you 90% ahead of the rest of the crowd.
Welcome to the addiction.

So your question:
Try these threads ... lemme know if it's what you are looking for

Sorry about the grammar. I'm posting this from my phone so its more proper. When posting from my computer I'm afraid I just get lazy.

Thanks for posting the thread links. I will look at them tonight when I get home.

Looking back at my post, you're right it seems so elementary. I like to be taken seriously so I will improve my post quality. Thanks for the constructive criticism. More effective than flaming and bashing.

How the flip do you get the air filter out. I really don't want to break anything. It looks so simple.

Am I missing something?

No you have to push the whole air box back until the two pegs come out of the holes, and then pull it straight up, I think. There's a how-to somewhere on the forums, maybe under DYI. Don't take my word for it though, cause the bottom two pegs are broke off of my air box (came that way).

edit: here's the thread: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=54827.html
also pictures on the bottom of that thread somewhere..

LOL
Nope this is the perfect spot for a question like this ... this has been a well behaved thread actually.

The Rear O2 sensor does not get messed up but it reports to the ECU that the Cat efficiency is bad.

This throws the CEL but does not effect how your engine performs.
That being said if you can live with the check engine light on then you are good to go.
Otherwise as mentioned by RX8Soldier you can buy a Cobb AP to mask the cel (only available on 2008 models and older)
Or buy a O2 fooler ... various success with these, so I've read.

be sure to get the MM tune with it as well
in addition to turning off the CEL an accessport is one of the best mods you can get for your 8 for tuning and realiability
