alright so we tried putting the coils on today, didnt work so well. turns out no one in college carries tools with them, so we went to walmart, got a small socket set and then got all the way back and then realized we needed an extension for it, which the cheap *** kit we bought didnt have. so my fraternity brother is bringin by his legit set tomorrow so we can actually swap em in tomorrow since we'll have tools.

-do have a question though, the car ran last week, just VERY bad. today we took off the accordian tube to get an easier time takin the coils off, and we only undid one wire cuz i wanted to switch em one at a time and we realized we didnt have the right tools as we did the first coil.
but after we put everything back together, i went to start it just to see if it would run, and it turned over....horribly though, but wouldnt start for the life of it. we smelled gas but there was no spark what so ever and im wondering if its prolly the coils just competely dead now or if we screwed somethin up takin those things off and on today.

 

Did you remember to reconnect the MAF sensor?
You can try cleaning it, but I remember doing that last time you were over so I doubt it got contaminated that quickly.
Did you notice any oil in the accordion tube?
You probably smelled gas because the engine flooded due to not being able to turn it over.

 

no we didnt actually remove the intake, just undid the coupler holding the accordian tube to the throttle body and slid it to the left to make it easier to get to the coils. and undid one spark plug wire, there was a little plastic box thing on the side of the accordian tube that i dont remember having. it had a thin layer of oil when i stuck my finger in it but as for the accordian tube i didnt check. but theres prolly a little cuz there always has been since i still havent put a catch can on.

and the first thing i said when it didnt start was that it prolly flooded, but it turned over fine, just wouldnt get that little ooomph to start. so idk, i hope after we swap coils tomorrow it'll be okay, although with this car things tend to never go that easily.

 

You should play it safe and disconnected the MAF sensor so you don't risk pulling on the wires.
Since you did find oil in the resonance chamber, you should clean the MAF.
Damn... starting to wonder if that was your problem all along...

That is the first thing I would now that you mentioned this.
1) Disconnect and remove the MAF and clean it with contact cleaner (spray right at the wires, just don't physically touch them).
2) Install the MAF and then try to start the car (remember that its probably flooded so you'll have a hard time starting it).
3) When the car finally starts, listen to it and see if it makes that god-awful sound again.
4) If it still sounds like ****, then install the coils. If it doesn't, then you know it was the MAF all along.

 

haha alright well i have four questions about that then:
1) is disconnecting the MAF as easy as just unclipping it after we take the intake box off? cuz remember when we put my stock intake back on we never put the two nuts in underneath the box so its easy to take it off.
2) since the car has a real chance of being flooded, should i hold the pedal at WOT and crank it over for a little bit before starting it? will it make it easier?
3) what exactly qualifies as a contact cleaner?
4) if the car doesnt start at all, how will i know if its due to the car being flooded or if its the coils making the plugs not spark at all?

sorry for all the questions but i just dont want to open this up to more problems, just wanna eliminate the one problem and get the car back home and keep it there.

Pretty much... hold down the accelerator and crank for a few seconds (no more than 10sec).
Then try cranking it again without holding down the accelerator.
There are other methods to deflood, but we'll start simple for you

If you go up to Autozone you'll see aerosol cans labeled Contact Cleaner, Electric Cleaner, and/or MAF cleaner... its all the same ****.
Just get the MAF cleaner so in the future you'll know what that can was used for.

The likelihood of all four (or more than one) coils failing at the same time is slim to none.
If you're not getting spark to any of the coils, then you have a different problem like the eccentric shaft positioning sensor (which I doubt).
If the car sounds like it wants to start, its probably flooded.
And because you haven't been able to get it started, its also more likely its flooded anyway even if the coils were bad.

3) alright i think i can find that somewhere, how long does it take to "air dry" like what it says to do in the DIY?
4) hopefully it'll start again after i clean the MAF, i just dont get how it goes from starting and just running crappy, and then after we mess with the accordian tube and resovoir to not starting at all. but we'll find out soon enough.

It only takes a few seconds to evaporate, so it should be dry by the time you install the MAF and try starting again.

Just verify that the ignition wire is secured, but I think a flood is whats really keeping it from starting.
But if it doesn't start, throw on the other coils and see if it helps.
You'll have more difficulty starting a flooded engine with a weak ignition than with a good/strong one.

 

haha alright, but what ignition wire are you talkin about? just the spark plug wires?? and yeah i dont have the upgraded starter as to my knowledge, even though you guys said it sounded like i did when you heard it start.

haha okay okay i gotcha, and i believe it was steve although i may be mistaken, you guys said my car started to easily at his shop for it to be the original starter, cuz you started yours and i started mine right after. but yeahhh it always could be some sarcasm.

 

Yeah, but you have to pay for a second line. Using the tether works quite well, is adequate in speed, and saves me from paying for a data plan on both a phone and aircard.

 

Does the Blackberry Curve have a touchscreen?

 

I don't believe any Curve models had touchscreen (could be wrong).

Actually I'm not thinking about anything, I'm asking the question. The newest model, without the trackball, is called what? Does it have a touchscreen. That's another requirement for my use.

TJ: Sounds like you're really having a rough go of it. . . And you mean to tell me your in an Automotive major at Toledo and you don't even have access to a set of tools? That's crazy.

Also, I can confirm that you did not have the upgraded starter. However, that's not the primary issue right now. I would say clean the MAF, get the correct tools to swap the coils, and get that puppy started. It might be worth it to pull the CEL Codes also. I'm sure you're getting a mis-fire and some other codes hidden behind your CEL for your midpipe. Does Toledo have an OBD scanner?


My boss has the Storm Version 1. Its a little slow to respond to commands at time (like .5 seconds, but it seems like a long time when using the phone) But he said its been really good. When it becomes a free upgrade, I think I'm going to try it out.

I know they are out with a Storm Version 2 which fixed most of the bugs in the first storm.

Personally, I would say just go to the store and see which you like the best. I like to be able to use one handed operation and texting, so size of the keyboard and phone are important. The speed and ability to run applications, not very important to me I guess...

But I don't know, wheellee support of the droid makes me want to see what I can do with that also.

My roommate has a Droid and the bastard kept the default "DROOOID" ringtone for a couple weeks
After awhile I started making fun of him by saying, "ROOOID" everytime he mentioned his phone or even had it within my sights.

 

Its not a dig against TJ, its kind of scary in the program to learn all this crap about cars without ever picking up a wrench.

Unfortunately that's not the case with the newest Blackberry Tour (9630), however, is capable of being the fastest Blackberry on Sprint/Verizon network (moving to 4g, so internet will be faster coming in the next few months). The trackball cannot be removed, and if you take the phone apart to clean or replace the ball, it voids warranty. The trackball is by far the worst on this model than any other and I've worked with everything from the old black/white screen blackberries up until the newest Tour and Bold. If the trackball goes bad, it's a warrnty replacement. But as a note, just clean with compressed air about once a week or two.

Iphone, it has cool apps. I'll give it that, oh and touch screen. But I still can't imagine texting is the most accurate yet. It's on the AT&T network, which is still having trouble adjusting to the mass number of iphone users and really isn't ready honestly. It is a slower network and has taken upwards of months to just get photo messaging to work after iphone was released (eeeeek). Like John said, tethering is a pain with the iphone and requires hacking. But you can talk and browse the internet at the same time.. woot?

Blackberry - full keyboard, tethering (all models support this), fast network(s)... can't browse the internet at the same time while on a call (unless you're on AT&T and have the curve/bold).

Blackberry has these models currently out:
Bold (AT&T/T-Mobile) - camera, Touchpad (not trackball) compatible with new 4g when it's available
Tour (Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint) - camera, compatible with new 4g when it's available
Storm (Verizon, Sprint) - camera, Touchscreen, Storm2 is compatible with 4g when available
World (Just about everyone and their brother has this, it's outdated, but trackball is easy to change) - no camera, international support, no 4g support
Curve (oldone) (Just about everyone and their brother has this, it's outdated, but trackball is easy to change) - camera, wifi support, no 4g support
Pearl (Just about everyone and their brother has this, it's outdated, but trackball is easy to change) - small, camara, condensed keyboard

I have plenty more but will stop here lol
