GAH!!! This beautiful weather is killing me. so wish i could get her out...
Being out of work for 6 months forced me to drop the ins on the 8. so it sits in the garage... alone... unloved... Hoping maybe next week though that'll change. Just hope the weather keeps up! That and i desperately need new tires. I cant even begin to describe (or maybe too ashamed to admit) how bad they are. While they aren't bald... there's no excuse for it, lol.
Anyway... more or less just bitching and envying those of you who are driving your babies. ... bastards... :p

glad to hear i am not the only one. With the amount of rain we are getting today and possibly tomorrow, i imagine that the roads will be clean by the weekend when it gets nice again. Supposed to be beautiful saturday.
called State Farm and got the ins reinstated. woohoo!
$105 a half! <3 state farm
Now to shop tires. Off the cuff, any recommendations? Looking at the Dulnop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec and
BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDW 2. I've still got ties to Goodyear so i am leaning towards the Dunlops. Anything else you may recommend? trying to keep it around $200> per. remember, i dont race, so anything which may make you take that into consideration is of no consequence to me.
Thanks!

The Star Specs are a very popular economical autocross & track tire.
For Daily Driving, the Star Specs will wear out rather quickly.
Also, if you're in a pinch, I have some 225/45r18 tires that probably have 1 summer of driving left in them. Barely.
You bought these because they have a little flame down the center of tread, admit it.
Now, for Matt's sake, I ran Hankook RS3s as my autocross tire last year. Their wet performance at interstate speed is shaky. The few times I got caught in rain driving to or from an event was unpleasant. I would not purchase RS3s to be my daily driver tire if I didn't also need super traction in the dry for racing.

Someone at work had recommended the Firestone Firehawks (i think they were called). said he had them on his mustang and loved them. have find out which he has and look into them more.
I have to agree with Steve, if racing is not a factor I'd skip the star specs and go with something more durable. Don't need those for spirited driving. A high performance tire with good wet traction would be better. All depends on your annual mileage I guess. In just under 2 years of ownership I've done less than 6000 miles total driving year round.

exactly what i was thinking. I was something with good performance. Wet traction isn't so much a concern since i dont drive it hard (if at all) when it's wet. So, even if it gets wet out, my doing 55-60 on the highway wont matter a whole lot with regard to "wet performance".
Plus, (Brian can chime in if he wants as he knows more about this than I do) But a soft summer only tire (RS3s, star specs) if stored in sub 40 degree temps for an extended period of time causes the tread compound to degrade faster and equates to a noticeable loss of performance as well as an increased chance of damage under stress (bubbles, blow outs and broken tread blocks)

1. Dry performance
You don't seem to place value on the following:
1. Wet Performance
2. Longevity
3. Price
. . . . Dude, buy DOT R Comps.
7 year old tires? Two words for that: Dry Rot.

As for longevity, while i wouldn't say i was disregarding it, I wont be abusing them like an auto-x'er would. And like he said, after 3 - 4 years, they'll be replaced depending on how badly degraded they are.
I wouldn't say wet performance is not something i value but i've had directional tires on my last two cars, if you aren't trying to drive aggressive with them in the rain and you're not riding bald, they are fine. I become a granny when stuck driving my 8 in the rain.
No offense but,
It's really cute watching you guys talk about tires. Aside from Steve (who has limited experience but has the most knowledge of all you), if like like watching a debate held by the special Olympics.
No one knows what they are talking about from real world experience and testing, and you are just regurgitating what has been posted on the Internet.
No offense, but I haven't seen this thread get this retarded since McStupid moved to Colorado.

Awwww bless us with your wisdom oh great one! I mean little one :/ we're not worthy to speak of things we have no perfect knowledge of! Forgive us holy meatball for we shall be struck down with your posts...
since the wookie is gone I vote we rename you ewok.

I'm not gonna get into it Danny, but you may be the biggest offender. You have no idea what you are doing other than copying what other people have have done and assuming it is going to work on your car. And on top of
Actually, **** it. I don't need this. You guys have fun. Apparently most ricers on this forum know more than people who have real world experience. It's not worth my time. Good luck with your big wings and chrome stickers.

Oh yes it's a huge offense to research on the internet. Hey shinka (forgot your real name, sorry) go buy 5 different sets of tires for the 3k you drive a year and keep the best ones and throw the rest away. I'll do the same since we aren't "allowed" to share info.
Furthermore Brian, you tried to sell me your coilovers but I decided on a different route on my own so how is that copying you? I'm the first to admit you do know your **** but instead of being a nice guy and sharing your knowledge you decide to act like a condescending ***** just so you can feel better about yourself. I don't think that's necessary.
I love my evo wing thanks you.
I don't have chrome or any stickers for that matter. And like you should talk about stickers Brian. Come on dude.

This is delicious. I eat this up like a worm on a hook hung in front of a big fat walleye on lake erie. I would gladly offer daily driving info. Not a problem.
But from everything you posted Danny, you aren't helping for a damn. Your opinions are solely based on what you have read and not what you experienced....
Let me help: Star Spec Z1's
Will last all summer provided you don't autocross on them. Great in the rain until they get down to half tread. Once they hit 3/32 they are bricks and are useless.
KDW 2:
Same as the Z1 in terms of water displacement, but have less heat resistance and will get greasy quicker under extreme use.
If you are looking for a good all around tire I suggest a Continental Extreme Contact DW or DWS. Good rain and dry traction throughout.
If you want more info pm me. I'll gladly help you out.
As for you Danny, I have spent thousands of dollars on my car, tuning and testing. That information I gathered doesn't come cheap, and not way am I just going to arbitrarily going to give it up on a dime to anyone, let alone a new guy who I barely know. It comes with a privilege that I share with others in my same boat. This is obviously in regards to racing. I share this knowledge with those that have earned the right to know it, not some new guy that is trying to flaunt his "apparent" understanding of how stuff works. Plain and simple, you read a suggestion in a rulebook and fought to allow your ricerness deemed legal.
I can act like a condescending ***** because I earned that right. I know more than you and until you prove yourself as an equal, whatever you spit out of your fingers on the website is just regurgitated information that you probably found in a dead thread that is beyond meaningless. If you want help with the basics that is fine, the rest you have to earn.
And yes, I offered you the chance to buy my coilovers, you didn't take it. No worries as they are going to someone else. The copying part is something I will not get into here as I have better things to do. But answer me this, why exactly did you choose the RS3? A tire you have never driven on? What makes you so sure that it will actually work for you in the cold and wet Ohio spring/summer? Is this based off of someone that tested this tire, or is it because you read something on the Internet? I have more to say, but I'll leave it at this for now.

First off I saw the rs3 and how they worked on Steve's car. I was much closer to his times in the wet than in the dry. 2+2=? Second, I'm buying rs3's because I was planning to buy star specs but since I have to replace my lower control arms I want to offset the cost a bit. Third, I haven't copied anyone in any way at any time. If you are talking about the rpf-1, probably the most used wheel by amateur racers, then keep dreaming. Fourth, earn what? Your respect? Lmfao! You are so full of yourself and the saddest part is, you think it makes you "cool". Nobody earns the "right” to be a condescending ***** to anyone, ever.
I'm always willing to learn and I have learned a lot but the difference is I'm humble about it and thankful.

Holy Christ on a cross. I honestly don't think I could get a better laugh out of this thread right now. I'm boarder line texting, actually CALLING McGraw and apologizing for everything I ever said to him. I finally found someone more deserving of the title of completely clueless, and I feel I owe him my sincere apology for being an *** to him. It is truely amazing how much you don't know, yet proclaim to think you know. Case in point: comparing a stock RX8 on crap all seasons to an S2K AP1 on mismatched springs/blown shocks/ and an alignment that made baby Jesus cry. I have tried not to swear in this whole debate, but you seriously don't know what the **** you are talking about. You are comparing apples to oranges. This arguement is laughable at best, good luck with it.
Danny, you get the new crown.
PS: I'll get more into this tomorrow if I feel like it. This is enjoyable to me, but only to a point. Maybe my interest will be piqued tomorrow when I wake back up, but for now I think I'll just call it a night.

It doesn't matter if I know or not, they are my opinions and my choices. You can disagree all you want, fact is only my opinions and my choices matter on my car. My car is better than it was, so like it or not, I made the right choices. Just because you're pissy because I didn't ask the mighty meatball stamp of approval is on you. Just face the fact I'm doing this my way. by researching the internet and making my own informed decisions. Disagree and make fun all you want, I don't care. I don't need to be an attention ***** and constantly prove how good I think I am by talking **** on others. You might be a better autocrosser but I'm the better man. Sweet dreams ewok.
And show me where I said "I KNOW this or I KNOW that" I believe that would be you who says that. I have no idea where you get the image of me boasting I know everything from. If anything (and you can ask Steve for that) I always say I DON'T know enough and I WANT to know more. I'm well aware I need to learn a lot. I'd like to. But if I'm going to be berated and belittled and made fun of, then no thanks, I'll learn from someone else or from the internet. When I just met you, you were a nice guy giving me tips on how to do certain things but somewhere down the line you just turned into a Dick and I honest to God (not that I'm a believer) have no idea why. So you tell me Brian. What did I do sooooo wrong in your eyes. I really want to,know that.
@Brian, I'm just going to assume that your comments were in no way, shape or form aimed at me as i came here seeking advice, stated my usage, gave my price range, listed a couple of examples of what looked to be of genuine value from the research i had done and then left the forum open for any other questions, comments, points to ponder by anyone and everyone who felt they had something to contribute.
with that being said, thank you for confirming my initial take on the Z1's as well as your recommendations about the Continentals. I honestly wouldn't have ever considered Continental as i had bad luck with 3 sets of them when i first started driving back in 1990.
You and i've talked about my lack of desire to race this car fairly at length. I do have far more track experience than you know, i just don't get into it because it has nothing to do with Auto-X. My dad and i used to race go-kart in the mid and late 80's. Been every where: mid-ohio, watkins glen, pocono, summit point, even talledega. No greater rush that flying down a straight-away doing 120 an inch and a half off the ground. Maybe that's why i like the 8... like go-karts, it's all top end with squat for low end.
Anyway, feel free to keep beating up on the others but don't lump me in there. you know better than that, man. i value your experience, which is why i posted on here.
