Hey Jon: speaking of advice that no one will take, what do I need to do to clean my RB air intake? Do I have to buy that cleaning oil crap?

Yeah... you need to buy the K&N recharge kit.
It should have the instruction with it.
I believe you can get that at Autozone... I obviously haven't cleaned mine yet

It's stupid easy.

It comes with an aerosol can of cleaner and a pump spray bottle of oil

Spray cleaner on filter, let it sit for a few minutes, rinse it out.

Shake excess water off filter after rinsing and let air dry

LIGHTLY apply oil to filter with spray bottle, re insert filter.

If you over oil the filter it will suck the oil onto the MAFS. MAFS will collect dirt and **** and cause the car to run like poo.

I figured I'd type that out now, because knowing Steve I'd end up getting a text asking how to clean his filter.

A lot of the jumping to conclusions issues derives from experience and know how. Being that you all collectively have experienced every issue the car has, or will have, make you a knowledge basin. Now if i have an issue, i research it and so on. But even at that, when reading forum after forum, people jump around, talk in anagrams. It makes it very hard for someone to find a direct answer. Inconclusive data, and/or references that are even harder to find. I can understand losing patience over someone asking how to change a light bulb. But with cars and the economy, some people dont want to spend money they dont need to spend. It may be as simple as a seal or a fuse to someone who has been there, but to some who hasnt been there, they will obviously think the worst. So the simplest solution is to ask someone who has been there. Just remember not everyone knows as much you might know. It never hurts to ask, but i guess for some its painful to reply.

Anyways, Steve if you still want my old starter ill get it to you after i change them out, kinda waiting for the snow to go away, so i dont get stuck in my driveway, house garage is kinda too small to really do any work. ill let you know when i do it, then arrange a drop of so you can have it.

I have another thing going with spark plugs myself, but im currently doing homework on them to decide what is best for my setup. Any intel would be appreciated.

The problem is when someone gives advice and that advice is discarded or when someone with a low post count comes along and talks out their ***. We do all have experiences and somewhat specific knowledge about parts of the car; however, like Jon says...if you are unwilling to take a logical approach to diagnosing the situation you are bound to miss something stupid along the way.

Edit: And no offence to anyone here...but Stig had a known issue with his car. He assumed that he had fixed what he knew was broken and moved on from there instead of going back and revisiting what he had thought he had fixed. Tj assumed that he had a problem with his cat based on lack of power and did everything he could to get a new cat. Tj didn't try removing his air intake that he installed that has a couple documented reports of decreasing HP instead of increasing it. You have people out there that assume they blew an engine because of low power when they need coils. Or you have people that assume they have a blown engine when al they have is actually a loose vacuum hose. People want to throw money at the car instead of investigating and taking a planned approach to fixing their problem.

Yea i get that. My low post counts kinda adds to to that too i guess. but i hate forums. i just spent an hour reading 2 guys in a pissing contest over spark plugs and never came to a answer to the intial problem. I personally appreciate all the help offered here, there is a lot to learn from you guys. I just hate being a bother. I dont have money to throw at things, so i try to find the simplest solution. Ill never claim to know everything, and ill never disregard advice. I just dont want the hammer to come down on me when i ask a bunch of questions.

Ask questions...make an informed decision...don't ask questions and then ignore the advice you get...

and Im not saying that anyone here has done that...

Neither Jon nor I were, or have made accusations that anyone was stupid/had a limited intellegence level.

All I stated is that a lot more (and not just specificially this forum) people are jumping to conclusions extremely quick and thinking for the worst. Obviously this is a typical mindset when it comes to your primary means of transportation, and the potential cost for repairs made to said vehicle. But more times than not it is most likely solved by an easy simple fix that was, as mentioned, overlooked.

This is why the more experienced minds still stick around and try and help out the not so experienced. There are a few of us that like to, and some that love to share the wealth of knowledge that we have accumulated over years of working on problems that arise with different things in our lives.

So I don't want you to think that we are calling you out. We are here to help each other whne and were we can, as you've seen. Feel free to ask questions in here without fear of ridicule, and we will answer then to the best ability our collective minds can muster.

now that being said I want to offer you some very VERY helpful advice:

#1 Let your car warm up to full operating temperature before you go floggin on it and going into boost.

#2 Get a tune. I almost cried when I heard your car running at Steves building. Don't take this the wrong way as I'm not trying to come off as an ***, but your car idled and sounded like *** man. Please, for the sake of your engine, get a proper tune of that thing. I've been messing with boosted applications and tuning for quite some time, and that may be the worst running car I have every heard.

I'm not saying this to knock you, I'm just saying from my personal opinion that these (2) changes should be highly considered to extend the life of your engine, and your happiness as a rotary owner.

I am in the process of getting it to run better. Its a true handful to fix someone elses work. I already know the ignition is a huge problem and it needs tuned, that not news to me, thus the new starter new plugs, and an upgraded ignition in the future. And as far as tuning goes. im going to fix things i know that are wrong before i go to some tech and have him say "change all of this, this and this, then come back". Im not completely car illiterate, but this is the first rotary and turbo for me. So i take criticism well. Im taking steps within my budget. But the "sounds like ***" was a tad over the edge. Could have made the same point without it.

No offense man..but you are doing exactly that. You are risking the rest of your car as you run boosted without a tune. You say you are "fixing" things that are broken but while you do it you are breaking things that are more expensive. Drop the cache...get Jeff to look at your tuning data and tell you what needs to be fixed before he can properly/completely tune your car. He will know if your plugs/coils are bad.

Jeff = MazdaManiac...the only guy really trusted in the world of tuning an RX8.

A Tune is $600 if you need an AccessPort or $99 if you don't.

True Dat my friend. I've learned more on the forum than anywhere else about our 8s. Go back to the basics and check and re check what you have done. A fix + an uninformed fix doesn't = an improvement.

BTW Steve, thanks again for the tour and the O2 today. I think I gave you $10 too much...LOL... :

Lemme know when the pre mix comes in. Jon, do you want to the compression comparison before I start using the mix? Might be interesting.

Its not critical... just some "data" would be nice to see how much pre-mixing influences the compression numbers.
Though, that may also depend on other factors such as how worn the seals and/or housing is.
I don't know... its just one of those many topics that you hear about and wish there was some data to support it instead of hearsay.
Not saying it won't effect the numbers because I'm sure it will... but how much is what I'm curious about.

Oh snap! If it only takes 20 minutes to change plugs for you guys you should be on a nascar pit crew...it takes me that long to change them on my daily and its a ford probe with a standard I-4 (no tire removal and such)...anywho thanks for the help even tho apparently people think it is dumb to ask what is up with a bad vibration and blinking CEL although in a piston engine bad plugs feel completely different. I don't even remember what my point was to writing this post but there was a point i think

You should have a couple data points before you start premixing as well. Pull numbers on a regular interval and see what comes of the data.

Bad Vibrations = Most commonly it is a bad motor mount...but there are other things to look into first.
Blinking CEL = Misfire

Ok, with devils reference to mazdamaniac, i sent him an email, hopefully he shoots some info my way. also, for some reason the laptop software that came with the ems wont read from the ems. its a com port cable ran from the engine bay to the glove box. now my laptop doesnt have a com port, so i tried a com to usb adapter, and still no signal. im thinking maybe the usb adapter is junk considering it was 5 bucks, i might just drag the entire desktop out there just to have a com port.

Jeff is an engine tuner...he is not going to help you try and tune your own car. As for the DB9...you are going to either have to get a serial card for your laptop or you are going to have to cart your desktop which shouldn't have a DB9 on it either...out to your car.

I guess I'll stick my nose on Black05Turbo8 (sorry forgot your name) and Brian's discussion...

I actually agree with both.
I've already told Black05Turbo8 about my concerns with him not getting a proper tune.
Though I agree that you shouldn't spend money on a proper tune unless you repair/replace items that will effect the tune.

Coils are known to fail... nice to have the upgraded coils for your application (like the BHR coils).

Spark plugs... you should be running colder plugs.
Some people run all four RX7 plugs (shimming the trailing with a 2mm spacer) or run the RX7 plugs on the leading and RX8 plugs on the trailing.
Here are the RX7 plugs:
http://raceroots.com/index.php/produ...ark-plugs.html

Starter (obviously) won't effect the tune, but its nice to have.

Tune... you really need someone who not only knows how to tune, but tune a rotary.
As its been mentioned, Jeff (MazdaManiac) is one of the only real trusted tuners on this forum.
