Cobb AccessPORT Discussion
I'm trapped in a kind of weird negotiation with them.
They have some concerns about how they will handle taxation, warranty and their already present European distributor network.
Never mind that I've already got the device sorted.
There are, apparently, several units already in the EU getting tested.
I've sent a few to Europe myself, but they've been imported North American models.
I'm not really in a position to foot the bill for an experiment. I've had a few offers from some EU forum members to be "test mules", but the offer invariable includes my picking up the tab, which I simply don't have enough incentive to tackle.
I would have to see absolute interest from at least a dozen or more EU owners to take that risk.
So, for the moment, EU support is just like Asian support which is just like '08 support - in a holding pattern.

I am using the OEM cat, and will continue to use it. Does this mean that if it starts to fail, I will not get be able to pull the code from a CEL (with my OBDII code reader) if it is cat-related??? I'm prepared for it to fail prematurely, but I need to be able to know for sure if/when that happens, so I don't go crazy thinking it's some other problem.

if you have to leave the cat on, it'll go eventually, maybe sooner, maybe later. you'll know it's gone if you start loosing power...
Just installed my AP today, seems to be fine on the default map, but I'll be checking out the AFR and such when someone else drives the car for me, too hard to read on the road :P
It seems like the car is a tiny bit more responsive, and actually a slight different sound. Is it eating my CAT? :P I need to get faster changing gears to actually feel any performance change either way.
Out of curiousity, since people claim this mod might give better gas mileage, how is it that it's worse for the CAT? I would think that meant it used less gas and all.

Default map? I don't have a default map. Did you follow my instructions?
Leaner air/fuel ratios raise the CAT temperature.
Cool! Thanks!
Correct. If you want those codes turned back on, send an e-mail request to the usual place.

it leans out the AFR in certian areas, which means hotter exhaust gas temps, which cooks the CAT
Ok, so I'm a newb but am totally interested in the AccessPORT. My only mods are Mazdaspeed Exhaust and Mazdaspeed CAI. My first newbish question is, do I already have a removed cat because I installed the Mazdaspeed Exhaust? (I doubt it right?) Mazdaspeed exhaust comes with a midpipe right so I don't really have to change it?
Is removal of the cat something I can do myself or would I have to take it in?
reading through this thread I gathered that you break in the product with the stock map then I would switch over to a provided Exhaust/Intake map? I'll stop the questioning there before I ask anything else

But since CAT's are expensive I guess I should try to know more about the heat issue then. Or perhaps uninstall the AP and wait till I can replace the cat with a midpipe. It's not exactly easy to know what people mean by it will go sooner or later
It has 19300km on it now, so dunno what to expect.
Sounds like you are on the correct flash.
Just watch your equivalence ratio at cruise above 4000 RPM. That is the range that is typically over-rich to save the CAT and the range I usually target for fuel economy by leaning out.

ok, my exhaust has been "popping" more often than usual. i noticed it happens a lot more when i stop at a light or something and i'm idleing after the car is warmed up. what does that indicate?

you still have a catalytic convertor.

On a serious note, I have no idea. I can't say I'm seeing anything similar. Although I do believe I'm experiencing "surging" if I understand the phenomenia in shifiting at high rpms with my new AFRs.
I'm going to do some data logging tomorrow and will post results. I'm not necessarily complaining because if it is actual surging its very minimal and only at 6000+ on my 4AT.
lol, i have recently learned to make the car backfire/pop hard enough that you can feel it in the seats.... i dont particularly like that, it kinda worries me actually, but i was just trying to figure out what conditions would set it off....
Paul, are you experiencing this?

I can do it between 6000 and 8000 rpm on decell. Tap the throttle a few times and Pop, Pop, Pop.
I don't think it's going to do anything to your car except maybe burn up the rear bumper.

and yeah i get it best in that same rpm range after hard accel, esp when nice and warm
Do a search for people complaining about this in the fall of 2003!
Even the gauge cluster and audio/NAV system listen to the ABS for that info.
MazdaManiac, I see now you have Cobb AccessPort for Greddy turbo setup on 4 port AT. What is the injector setup for primary and secondary? What do most people setup at? I live in very hummit enviorment. If i buy it from you ca nyou setup for me?
