100% done aside from tuning. Tried to crank it up tonight, but it kept flooding. Time to go into the base map and mess with the fueling/injectors some more.

Why make it hard for yourself ?
380 (yellow) P1s are all you will ever need in that position . For a larger turbo like yours you probably wont spool early enough to max out the stock reds even ....

So it's been running pretty good lately. It's scary on only 8psi. Boost comes on so violently. Seeing full boost around 4600 rpms, and it holds till redline. Just running a base map now. We'll be doing some road tuning tuesday, hopefully. Dyno will be shortly after we work out all of the little kinks, and a few rich spots in the map. I'll raise the boost then.

Managed to get the intercooler pipes ceramic coated today. It definitely helped clean up the engine bay. I'd take a picture, but don't have a camera.

cool good to hear - must have got your idle sorted .

4600 is pretty late . 8 psi to RL should be in the 280s .

Big turbo = some lag... lol. That and I have an exhaust leak at the turbo I need to fix tomorrow... The flange is leaking a good bit.

Idle isn't really sorted. Something is screwy in the Closed Loop tables. It idles decent though. If I turn off closed loop, idle is perfect. I'll mess with it more tuesday when we do some road tuning.

Well good news. Idle is rock solid at 14.8-14.9 or so and at about 1100rpms. Did a few hours of road tuning tonight with my boss. Got the MAF scaling dead on, and we started to get the injectors in line. There's a few little kinks to be worked out in the fueling, but nothing major. AFR's are holding in the mid 11's through WOT runs. No detonation, no knock as of yet. Looks like we're going in the right direction. We'll do more road tuning later this week when we get a break from work we have in the shop. Tons of Subaru's to get finished, and a PITA Evo X tune we're working on now is taking up alot of time. Once everything is set, we'll take it up to the dyno for fine adjustments and hope to make some decent power.

I've been taking it semi easy as of late, and will continue to do so for the next few days. Hopefully I can have a video up by this weekend, but don't hold your breath.

Fixing my manifold today. Had a pretty big spot where the weld didn't get hot enough and bead to the flange off the uppipe. Spool time should be considerably lower now. Among that, I won't have to listen to the crappy *** exhaust leak anymore. :D

I'm gonna try and get a video up today. One of the guys at work has a video camera on his phone that actually takes decent shots.

DING DING DING.... Round #2

Road tuning + 100k miles + stock coils + big turbo + 8psi + misfires like a mother****** = blown motor numero 3.

I heard/felt misfires at about 6K rpms(partial throttle), let out of the throttle, but it was too late. You could hear the motor give out. OH well. The housings will be pretty paper weights I'm guessing. Datalogger showed no knock, and AFR's were around 11.4 or so in open loop at the time. Kinda weird. EGT's were also in the 1300-1400 range or so. I'm sure a side seal or apex seal took a ****. There's no oil or coolant on any of the plugs, but I'm not building crap for compression. We'll find out when the local RX-8 guys come by to help me do the swap and tear the old one apart.

Picking up a 06' motor with 31K/warranty on monday(CHEAP too)! The place even has the car with maintenance history to verify mileage and dealer TSB's done. Car was T-boned on the passenger rear quarter. Swapping next weekend. Hopefully the BHR ignition will be here by the time I'm done.

I'm not upset at all. I knew it was going to happen sooner rather than later. Live and learn!

Yeah - don't be upset . It has happened to most of us.

But putting another stock engine in without stronger seals is a mistake IMO. It took me a couple of blown engines to realise that .....

Thinking about buying the Esmeril racing ones just to have something for now. Haven't really seen any reviews on them though. What seals do you run, Brettus?

If I can salvage anything from the old motor I'll be dropping some coin doing rx-7 rotors with ceramic seals. We'll see how bad it is once I rip it apart.

I have the Esmeril seals in - really too early to give them any kind of endorsement.
I think some one piece seals would be better (Esmeril are two piece) because when they break it always seems to be at the splitt .

I figured that much. 1 piece seals get pricy, however. Can you or anyone else recommend anything on the budget side of pricing other than the 2 piece esmeril. NRS possibly?

No kidding... guages were all reading correctly. no lean spots on AFR either. Only code that was in the Cobb when it died was the P0301 misfire code.

Yea, I read it a while back. I believe he had NRS custom make his. IIRC they were upwards of $2K. Maybe I'm thinking of someone else... I'll peer through the thread again. Esmeril may be two piece, but they are well within my current budget, and hopefully, better than stock. I'll need to buy all the gaskets, springs, and jazz as well.

Might just stick the new motor in for now, rebuild the old one with new housings/seals, and swap again. Can't borrow a buddies car for too long, plus I'm moving to Hawaii in June. I'll need to be able to get it to the port to have it shipped. I'll consider my options and decide once I pick up the new motor sometime next week.
