Um... for those that don't know... The trophies are glasses with the St. Louis Region SCCA logo on it.

Thinking about doing this home made cold air intake:

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...me+made+intake

Opinions?

Also, should be getting my swaybar bushings tomorrow. Easy install though, don't even have to take off the bar.

I like the DIY air intake idea. I would be interested in that experiment if you go that route. I wonder what the estimated cost is for the parts (I apologize ahead of time if he stated this in the post....I didn't see that part).

The K & N filter is $40. I'd assume the piping would be no more than $10 total. It'd be pretty cheap I think. A lot cheaper than a $350+ cold air intake.

Yeah, the problem a lot of times with the DIY intakes is they're not tuned. I'm no expert on the subject but I believe that's why K&N redesigned one of their intakes. It actually produced LESS horsepower than factory. Yes, it sounded neat, but that's not really what you're looking for is it? I'd check the performance garage forum section to see what they have to say. There's quite a bit of rotary geniuses that hang around there.

Yeah I've done quite a bit of reading on the forum. The good part of this diy intake is that the air is not coming from the engine compartment like it was on that k&n you reference. I suppose I can't be sure the air is colder than the current VFAD setup though...

I know I mentioned this to a couple people in the past, but here's the ol' Tibby doing its dancing act. I'm thinking the three-wheel motion is how I was able to pivot the car so well back in the day and win index championship with that little beasty.

Yeah, excellent point. That engine compartment gets a bit toasty. I personally think the after market intakes are a bit overpriced for the small bit of power they produce. I got one just to keep the stocker look, but it has since been removed and am back to the factory box with K&N drop-in and the VFAD replaced w/ the racing beat duct. Does it give me more power? Dunno. Does it sound nice, sure. Was the original setup worth the money? Probably not. Eh well.

Wow that pic is sweet. You may not do as well on the index with the 8 (maybe you do?), but you definitely look better!

Also, event 3 results are up! stlsolo.org

Finally!! I'm definitely not as good on the index... yet. This past race I just couldn't bring myself to push harder. Damn that "go slow to go fast" theory!

LOL, that's his index time. I went a 36.319 and you went 37.293. Very good index position I might add. Mike would've been two seconds faster but that blasted cone got in the way on his best run. I hate that.

Guess I was confused b/c mine doesn't show index time under "total", but street tire class does. Why?

The street tire class is compared by index for place while all the other classes are compared by raw time.

Yeah, I'm peaved about that cone. My other best run I decided to go off the track for some reason. DNF. I need to get that new sub box made to get a little weight out of my *** end. Project for this weekend? I can't decide if I just want to buy the one that Wynn had or to make my own. I also can't decide between 10" or 12" sub. I think my 12" JL's are too boomy (not tight enough) but that could be because they are old as a woman in a WaterLogged wet dream. Any suggestions? Comments?

And about that filter mod, I know people have had idle problems with similar mods. There was a guy in 04 who modified his so that he could fit a blitz filter in the stock box. He had a window into the box so you could see it. It looked awesome.

As for colder air, the stock box has a snorkle that goes into the bumper if I remember correctly. So it is alreay sucking air from the front left bumper.

HAHAH!! It's on!

As far as the box goes (aside from old, dried up, and leathery) I'm moving to a used 4080 box like Wim had. It holds a 10" sub and is a sealed enclosure. It won't be as loud as a ported box (or your mom when I'm giving it to her) and will therefore require a little more power for the same volume you're used to, but the sound will be tighter.

If you're looking for a custom-built project I'd be up for observing/helping.

Where did you get the used box? I will have plenty of power pushing into one sub (950 watts) so I think a 10" sub would be the way to go.

I don't think that a custom project would make anything better than the 4080. The 4080 still leaves room for the rear sway bars and other concerns I had.

I'd say 950 watts might be a bit much. I'm getting the box from a guy on the forums. Will be talking to him tonight. Otherwise you can get them new online for about $300 each.

What sub are you planning to put in the box? I am looking at a JL Audio 10W3v2. That should be able to handle the power and its fairly cheap.

Hey Terrets....I have a Rockford Fosgate Punch 10" sub I'd be willing to get rid of cheap. They are a pair, but I'm sure we could work something out if you are interested.

What amp are you planning on using? I'm only pushing 150w mono through a JL e2150 amp, so according to this chart a 10w1v2 should be enough for my power needs: http://mobile.jlaudio.com/pdfs/RecPowerChart.pdf

Volume requirements seem right on for both the 10w3 and the 10w1 with the 4080 box when you account for driver and brace displacement. So it just depends how much boom you want. I'm just looking for that low-end that my Infinity 6x9s can't deliver and the 8" JL 8w0 in the JL-tuned enclosure's mount gets in the way of the camera mount, so that has to go. Anyone interested in buying that baby off me?
