no no, I disagree with that one.
7k refund could have little to nothing to do with her actual income. Depreciation and rental properties are a big factor. Also, what method of depreciation is she using? 200% declining? 100%? straight line?
How bout home expenses, lost rental income.
The key is to take a loss on your home every year. If you can do that, you'll get a refund.
If she can afford to live on her income without claiming extra dependants, why not. Better safe then sorry and end up with a tax bill every year

better example: I just did the taxes for a friend of mine last week.
After I entered his income in, he was getting a refund of $1,048.
AFTER deductions and adjustments his fed rebate jumped to $10,600.
One of his rentals was vacant for quite some time last year (unforseeable expense) so it resulted in a big loss which gave him a refund.
If however, your neighbor is single with no kids and owns no other property then MAYBE she should consider adjusting her withholdings. Tough to say...

THe Gov't on the other hand, they owe me much more. Hopefully they will be quick with the money$$$$
State is supposed to begin reviewing refunds again for possible payments.
I'll have to research it a bit to see if this RAPING we just got in the form of a "budget" will actually pay me my own money back with more of my money.

well, i still disagree... for someone that's single, a high income earner, and a home owner and still filing single 1 and waiting all year to get $7k back is completely idiotic. just my opinion though. i'd much rather have my $ now so i can make decisions on how to spend, invest, blow it rather than let uncle sam earn interest on it.

No one is getting a dime from the State right now.
Here is a quote from the Franchise Tax Board site.
"The State Controller announced on Thursday, February 19, 2009, that once the budget plan provides the needed cash in the treasury, his office will work around the clock to get delayed payments out the door. Check this website for updated information on the status of the delayed tax refunds."
and...
Frequently Asked Questions
2.When will the refund delay be lifted? (Updated February 20, 2009)
It is anticipated that as soon as the cash problems are solved, the refund delay will be lifted. Check this website for updated information on the status of the delay.
3.Now that the budget is passed, when will my refund be issued? (Updated February 20, 2009)
Even though the budget is enacted, the state must now determine if there is sufficient cash to pay outstanding debts, including tax refunds. Until then, refunds will continue to be delayed.

This is what you should send the State.
Even though I have a budget enacted, I must now determine if there is sufficient cash to pay outstanding debts,
including taxes owed to the State of California. Until then, taxes due will continue to be delayed.
If you owe, MAN UP!!!

i think the entire state assembly should also give up their pensions & salaries for gross incompetence in running the state. arnold is already working for free. so they should join the punishment. they are THE worst and THE most stupidly incompetent group of monkey politicians in CA's history next to gray davis...
alright, enough of this politics crap.

I would rather have a refund than have to pay....but, I will start to review this idea given two recent facts. I have not received my federal refund from last year, and it looks as though I won't receive a state refund this year.
In the past, I looked at this like bonus check..something we don't ever get in education, as our salaries are set and very predicatble.....but now, no bonus check, and it sucks.
.....and please do not ask why I haven't received my federal refund, just know I didn't.

I had that happen. THey sent me a letter explaining why they were keeping my money. It took almost 2 years for me to show them the evidence that I was right, and they had made a mistake.
But did they pay me interest on the money . . . NNNOOOOoooo
Did I get to charge them a 'late fee' . . . . NNNnnnoooooooooo
