Received them today and installed. I was starting to have idle issues and thought is might be the mounts. Last week we went to an event at a winery. The parking lot was gravel. On the way out my low car caught a rock underneath. I checked but all I could find was a scrape on the downpipe/midpipe flange. The car ran home fine but the next time I went to start it up it was slower to start and idles rough. At speed it is fine, still builds boost like before, no apparent issues otherwise, just at idle. There seems to be a sucking sound I can't place, so perhaps a vacuum leak...

Here's a video of the idle sound:

That sounds like a leak but it sound cyclical, not a normal vacuum leak. Have you checked your STFT at idle? Hmmm, maybe the purge valve making that noise?

STFT at idle are right around 5%. Also running leaner than I like. And hotter. I'm staring to wonder if my OMP breather hose got knocked loose behind the UIM. That seems to be where the sound is coming from.

In all seriousness it was a marked change after hitting the rock.

I would check compression, not trying to scare u but mine gave the same symptoms after a couple weeks with the esmeril turbo kit, the engine started acting up at idle and Then started having hot start issue then it wouldn't start.

I appreciate the suggestion. If I had a quick and easy way to test compression then I surely would. In the meantime I am trying to analyze based on circumstance and what I currently have ability to measure. Anything outside of idle I have no issues. I don't have hot start issues at all. One day idle was fine. Then I caught a rock underneath and idle started acting up. Additional symptoms are car is running leaner, coolant temps are higher and there is that noise that you hear in the video after the rock incident.

I just got back home so engine bay is still hot. I will poke around after it cools down.

The trademark Kiwi (finger in the hole) compression test; works like a charm!!!!

Seriously, it does work pretty good for total loss of compression.

I think a rephrase is in order. Don't put your finger in the hole (because if it's too long you will loose the tip!). Put your finger OVER the hole.

Must resist urge to make a joke....

So is it critical to put a finger on the hole or is listening sufficient? I didn't have anyone available to help so I just pulled a plug (and fuel pump fuse and relay) and listened. Solid sounding pulses on both chambers. I took video I will post later.

EDIT: as I listen to it with headphones the rear chamber does seem to have a slight change in sound.

This is the front chamber, all pulses sound consistent:

This is the rear chamber, slight variation in sound, low compression?:

Just confirmed with finger test on plug hole - low compression rear chamber. Rebuild time!

I'd cover the hole with finger - because you want to seal it so you can feel the pressure differences between the chambers.

Nah, it's good! I've been telling Fazda I've been looking forward to the day it goes so I can attempt a rebuild. Not a bad run for a reman engine with 20K miles, half of those boosted. At least it's low compression and not likely something catastrophic. I guess I'll see when I crack it open. My only regret is that it didn't happen closet to winter. Oh well, I can start planning all the things I want to do while it's under the knife

now we'll actually get to see how long a motor can last on that kind of power... Should possibly make even more power on a fresh motor. GL with rebuild

Thanks man! It will likely be a slow process because this summer is going to be busy. But I'll post updates as it goes.

from the phone I couldn't hear the difference but listening on the youtube, you can hear there is a slight difference in the rear chamber.

will be fun to help build another engine!

Ya I tried listening to it on the phone first as well and didn't really hear it until I used headphones.

Around 20K. I don't have the exact mileage but it was replaced at just over 60K and the car is now just over 80K.
