Car as it sits before Build
http://imageshack.us/a/img827/448/img0461kk.jpg

Reason for N/A build is simply a matter of reinforcing engine and supporting components before doing an FI build later next year. Plus the I have tons of time before the new Pettit charger is available.

HiFlite999 01-23-2013 11:11 AM

You might consider something like this to simplify the oil lines: RX8: Oil System: Oil Line Set - 04-08 RX-8 Manual Trans only -

Much easier to do when the engine is out.

slvrstreak 01-23-2013 11:13 AM

wise choice sir

X7rotor 01-23-2013 11:14 AM

Very clean and quick build looking forward to see more. There someone that does itb and did the whole custom setup for a corolla for 800 ill talk to them see if tgey would build one for an 8 might be usefall on a na build.

29k and already rebuilding the motor!?! Props, looks like a solid build. I am still enjoying mine stock lol.

Carbon8 01-23-2013 11:21 AM

Motor was fine when I pulled it out, just decided it was time to start building and wanted the features pettit offered.

What horsepower do you expect to achieve? While staying NA

Carbon8 01-23-2013 11:35 AM

Realistically once its all tuned and said and done 210WHP-:fingersx:220WHP but im not really worried about that for this build. The main purpose here is to get a reinforced and strong core build so i'm ready for a good reliable FI build next year

9krpmrx8 01-23-2013 11:45 AM

Nice build, I like what you did with the engine bay.

The rx8performance oil cooler kit is not worth it. The stock coolers will be more than sufficient for an NA build (and most FI builds as well unless it is a track car) and you could get top notch fittings and lines from a hydraulic hose supply shop and make your own lines and save yourself a ton of money. You could also remove the stock oil cooler thermostats and run a proper oil thermostat like I did.

I am turbocharged (oil lubricates the turbo) and I have yet to get my oil temps above 210F-215F. My oil pressure is increased via a Pineapple Racing oil pressure regulator but just by going with larger more direct custom oil lines you will see an increase in oil pressure even with the stock oil pressure regulator and coolers installed.

Why are you thinking of nitrous if you have FI plans?

RotaryMachineRx 01-23-2013 11:45 AM

Well nobody is going to tell you that you didnt do your homework... looking forward to watching you join the FI club!

All great points, when i was pricing out the racing beat lines I noticed it was only an extra 400 bucks for this kit and it had an separate Tstat included, so i figured it would be worth the extra cash not only to include the lines and the tstat but then to get brand new coolers as mine are a little chipped up, figured if I was going to do might as well do it right. So even though these coolers wont give me much more performance then the stock ones, the lines and tstat where enough to convince me to just go with this, better have it a not need it than need it and not have it.

And i'm just thinking about the nitrous, probably wont really use it but again its one of those i have it kinda of things. Not to happy about having to redo the entire fuel system to do it so its still an undecided upgrade

fastlaneracing 01-23-2013 12:52 PM

Thumbs up for a great build! :)

Yeah I have installed the RB lines and they are Earl's fittings and lines and are of great quality. If you are going to use aluminum fitting and SS lines make sure you have proper AN wrenches if you ever need to remove them, it doesn't take much to screw them up. If the rx8performance lines are not high quality fittings and lines then I would be very wary, because an oil line failure is not something you want just because you decided to save a few bucks. Going cheap on hose and fittings is a big mistake.

Words of Wisdom, Noted

Brettus 01-23-2013 03:06 PM

Wow - lots of work going in here . Hope you get the results you desire .

BTW - I took my LW fly off recently - was a good move for me on an FI'd engine.

What was the issue?

Brettus 01-23-2013 03:26 PM

Just felt the car had become too uncivilised for the street and that it is a waste of time when you have plenty of power.
Limit becomes traction in the gears where a LW fly is effective .

Mawnee 01-23-2013 03:35 PM

Nice build!

I came to the same conclusion in using LW flywheels on my first vette. Especially when coupled with an agressive clutch/cam. Makes it a real pain to drive...casually.

olddragger 01-23-2013 03:56 PM

i do well with mine---supercharged engines do idle faster which probably helps.
I wish I had taken time to do my engine bay like you did--very nice.
I am surprised no one mentioned the new freeze plug like thing inbetween the leading and trailing sparkplugs--lol.

I will pass on some knowledge some builders have passed on to me and others. Dont let your oil temps get over 200F for any length of time. The oem coolers will not cool the oil well enough for that. You need bigger coolers and fans for the low speed times.
Flame suit on.

very nice and thought out build.
Oh yea if you are getting the cobb dont waste money on a a/f gauge

9krpmrx8 01-23-2013 04:08 PM

Yeah what is that plug looking thing? OD, your car felt like a beast when I drove it. Was the stalling you were experience when you let off the throttle abruptly related to that? I know a couple of others have experienced that with lightened flywheels.

Carbon8 01-23-2013 04:49 PM

[QUOTE=olddragger;4414568I am surprised no one mentioned the new freeze plug like thing inbetween the leading and trailing sparkplugs--lol.[/QUOTE]

I believe what you are referring to is a heat tab, centers will melt out if temps at that point exceed 300F

PichuX8 01-23-2013 05:23 PM

Mice build idea and progress! Btw I noticed you plan to swap to the s2 trans. Is the reason for this because the trans is more reliable? Also is it an easy swap because I have to get my trans replaced soon due to some rare problems.

Thanks,
Mike

Carbon8 01-23-2013 05:47 PM

S2 trans is much more reliable then the S1 and can take much more of a beating is the reason, the gearing is smaller so unless you are also doing an S2 rear diff swap your acceleration will suffer slightly also it is a bit heavier, but its the price im willing to pay for in all honestly a much better built gear box. It is direct bolt on, but you will have to modify the wiring as the S1 used different style connectors. Only 4 wires though not hard at all. Heres a complete write up on it if your interested, total swap is around 3 grand for a brand new one, much cheaper to rebuild your own

For that matter, the guages are just a personal preference i think its a cleaner look, I already have all this data on my appradio via dashcommand. but i'm old fashion and like my gauges and dials :)

olddragger 01-23-2013 06:10 PM

thanks for clarifying the "freeze plug like thing". I hope it never gets past 300F :)
Anyone know why it is there?

Agreed the s2 trans is a much better unit. It is bigger than the S1 so if you plan on running resonators or a cat--plan on wrapping it good. I run one and I love it.

I understand the aesthetics of an a/f gauge. They do look good . You will have to buy a new sensor -- about once a year. Our exhaust burns them up pretty fast.

This is going to be a very nice build.

Hey 9K---yea the light flywheel does seem to make it harder to catch at idle after it is revved up. I got to get Steve Kan on that, but i have gotten so used to just very lightly tapping the throttle while stopping (slowing the rate of falling rpms) that --it doesnt bother me at all.
It feels even better now with my ssv locked open and the exhaust system I installed--wish yall were here to ride!

OP--there is lower intake manifold that can be done--if you are interested PM me.

slvrstreak 01-24-2013 05:50 AM

I'll get to check it out next weekend :D:

OP - after looking at your list again I noticed you said, "Upgraded Radiator Fans (havent decided on brand yet)"
like OD recommended just get a fan speed controller...cheaper and variable fan speeds :)

Carbon8 01-24-2013 08:31 AM

Thanks for the tip, I was already going to incorporate this mod, for the fans
Cooling Fan Control Kit by RX-8 Performance | RX8Performance.com

I was also under the impression that stock fans, performance are sub par especially for what they cost, currently looking at Mishimoto, but i know 9k had a bad experience with them so i'm not entirely decided yet

olddragger 01-24-2013 08:32 AM

I forgot to expalin why that "Plug" is between the sparkplugs.
Cam does water jacket work around the lead plug which eliminates the potential of those lead sparkplug cracks from developing in the housing. I know everyone knows about how Mazda reduced the water jacket size to retain the engine bolt locations.

olddragger 01-24-2013 08:34 AM

The stock fans will work OK with a controller --or the cobb set to activate both at once. I run the oem fans along with a secondary radiator.

Unoriginalusername 01-24-2013 08:54 AM

applause for the build

Carbon8 01-24-2013 08:54 AM

I'm not to keen on a second radiator, i think with what i have going in as far as cooling upgrade and the work cam did on the internals there is no reason i will ever have a problem. Also keep in mind i don't race this car, its just my summer/project car i may race at the track but only once or twice a year, other than that just some slightly aggressive street driving (depending on my mood ;) )

What i'm working on right now i think is already slightly overkill even without getting into a second rad, plus i live in buffalo so extreme temps aren't remotely an issue.

Brettus 01-24-2013 09:15 AM

Why would you buy a fan controller these days when you can put that money towards an AP and get all the control you need with that ?

Touche, slipped my mind to be honest.

RotaryMachineRx 01-24-2013 09:57 AM

AP ftw.... must admit living in a northern climate really saves alot of cooling worry.... I don't see any extreme coolant temps even on the hottest of days here with the AP increased fan use; even the odd time i've tracked the car

Carbon8 01-24-2013 10:03 AM

:suitdance

Benefits of dealing with snow 6 months out of the year, just makes me want to dance.

Harlan 01-24-2013 07:10 PM

Beautiful build. :icon_tup: Have you thought of using Evans NPG?

For the cost to benefit its not worth it considering i dont track the car and im in a colder climate, doubt ill ever get coolant temps high enough to be an issue.

olddragger 01-24-2013 08:53 PM

dang yall and cool temps! :)
I was on track one time in ga when ambient was 105F and the pitt pavement was 155+!

Get a fan controller if you dont have the cobb--or if you are locked out of the cobb by your tuner:)

Carbon8 01-24-2013 10:13 PM

It was -4F here today, so i believe my great coolant temps are a fair trade of for this crap weather 6 months a year, and mild crap weather in the other 6 :(

Good job, what did you use to clean the SSV?

Carbon8 01-25-2013 10:52 AM

Also, any recommendations for LIM reassembly what type of grease to use, as the workshop manual only dictates, Grease Application Point but does not give reference to what kind. I did notice it was a white Grease on the VDI and SSV, APV just appeared to be loaded with carbon, and slight engine oil.

Thanks

9krpmrx8 01-25-2013 10:54 AM

For the APV's you just coat them in engine oil before installing the LIM. I did the same on the SSV and VDI.

Good job, what did you use to clean the SSV?

Just used a can of carb cleaner then soaked them overnight in a carb solvent, wiped them off the next day, SSV was the only one i bad shape (not even that bad either) everything else wasn't to bad, cleaned out the LIM with carb cleaner too before i sent it out for coating

Yeah soaking helped a lot for me too. All the little nooks and crannies on the SSV are kind of a pain.
