So, when I go up hill, I can hear the turbo and sometimes when I let off the gas I hear a slight flutter. Keep in mind this is all under 3500RPM. I have the Greddy Type-R.
sounds like compressor surge but you won't be able to tell until you get into boost.
the type-r should be compatible for your setup.

it got me thinking about the flutter sound I sometimes hear when I release the throttle when I'm at very small boost levels and part throttle only (between -5inhg and 1-2psi).... I don't hear the flutter at larger boost levels (greater than 2 psi); just a smooth gust of air releasing like you'd expect; so I was lead to believe that it is just my BOV fluttering....
Okay good to know... I'm feeling comfortable, and always have felt comfortable, with the idea that it's just the BOV fluttering....
See now this gets me thinking.... at the end of the fall before we parked our cars my roommate blew the bearing on his turbo (also uses SSQV on an SRT-4 Set-up) ..... it got me thinking about the flutter sound I sometimes hear when I release the throttle when I'm at very small boost levels and part throttle only (between -5inhg and 1-2psi). I took him for a spin to see if he was hearing the same thing on his car but he said it wasnt the same sound. I don't hear the flutter at larger boost levels (greater than 2 psi); just a smooth gust of air releasing like you'd expect; so I was lead to believe that it is just my BOV fluttering... Wish there was another Turbo 8 anywhere near me so I could listen but alas that is not the case..... Any input about that Brett....

. And those guys that say it is "normal" think that because it is soooooo common that it probably does seem "normal" to them .Whether surge at that low level is a problem ....... I don't really know . What I do know is that my turbo has lasted a very long time - and I adjusted my BOV so that I didn't get ANY surge.
If your BOV is VTA , I would say that it is virtually impossible to avoid surge unless your BOV is a particularly good one. I found I had to adjust mine such that it was actually partially open at idle before it would do the job properly . Not a good thing if you are VTA but perfectly fine if you recirc.
Another side issue to this is part throttle boost - with a correctly adjusted BOV part throttle boost (potential boost spikes and uncontrollable spin outs) will be minimised.
Oh and BTW - the Greddy type R is NOT a good BOV .
I did a full writeup on this stuff a couple of years ago - see "boost control" .

I actually read up a bit on the Type R after receiving the kit and I found conflicting info. most reviews say it's great, some say it's for 20PSI and over setups but nothing definitive from any reliable source. It's popular with the supra crowd.
I wonder if the flange is the same for all the Greddy BOV's.

I have the hks ssq... one large question that comes to mind is whether it is a legit HKS bov or not. I get the flutter here and there but not if I hit any kind of positive boost.
my BOV does not have the screw on the back of it for adjustment so I am not sure how I would go about adjusting it.

F@#k that, it's finally running right. It loves this cold weather but keeping the revs below 4,000RPM is like going to a strip club and not getting a lap dance.Do they make a recirc fitting for that?
