I found a NAV assembly at a local junkyard but they want $250 for it. I told them they can keep it for that much

I was just curious: could you use this to power the tablet instead of using the actual cigarette lighter plug?

Yes, it outputs 5V at a max of 3amps. Probably safer than taking apart and taping up an cigarette lighter one.

Taping?
You spice and solder it in with your existing lighter socket. don't use tape...

He meant wrapping the whole cigarette lighter in tape after you tap into the power. How else would you wrap it so it doesn't touch other electric things to and output the power to them?

You must have a socket to put yours in then? Otherwise you'd have to wire directly to the connectors on the side of the plug and then, yes, tape it up with electrical tape.

That is if you don't do what most people do and tear the thing apart, solder straight to the board and then tape that up.

While we're on the topic: Anyone know a spot in the cabin to tap into constant 12v other than the fusebox?

Yeah, It's a 5v2amp cig charger. I actually do not even use the added socket anymore. I just plugged it into the cig lighter in the ashtray now so I can charge my phone and unplug the tablet if it overheats so it stops beeping at me.

I just recently bought a Nexus 7 and hope to install it in my car as soon as I find a navihood with the Open/Tilt buttons on eBay or somewhere else.

One quick question... I have an rx8 that did not come with the navihood/gps assembly... if I buy one on eBay can I just switch out my current hood with the navihood without doing any plastic cutting on the top of the dash? (I realize I may have to do some cutting on the assembly to make the tablet fit.)

Also, are there any sites that sell the OEM nav hood?

Yes, it's a direct replacement no cutting needed.

Your best bet is to check here: RX-8 Parts For Sale/Wanted - RX8Club.com
or another options might include:
05 RX-8 custom fab install (motorized flip-up screen)
or
JDM Japanese Auto Parts specialists | japanparts.com
part# 091-030-004 or 091-021-002 or 091-028-001

Alright thanks for the info, how much does the whole navihood usually go for? Is around 200 a good price for it?

I think I paid $275 for mine. I've seen them go as high as $500, back in the day. Now I think they are in the mid 200's

Since I'm looking for a nav hood to purchase, what components should come with it?
  • The motor
  • Open/Tilt buttons with wires
  • PCB on the inside and outside

Is there anything else I'm missing? For those of you that have done it, do you purchase additional wires for the power, acc, etc.?

//EDIT
I just found this thread: https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-int...om-pcb-172054/

Unfortunately it looks like the pics are gone, but that should be ok. If I'm reading it right.. I need to buy 3x 14awg wires?

You will need to power the hood as well as run power to the tablet unless, you do what Shell did and use a different hood. https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-int...i-come-225539/

2013 Nexus 7? Let me tell you, it will be an incredibly, incredibly tight fit. There is almost no room left at all on the sides. You will likely have to wire your own connectors or potentially need to hard wire directly to the tablet circuit board. You may have an easier time of it if you only hook up USB and don't use the audio plug, but even then you'll need to whittle the connector down to nothing.

Nah I bought the 1st gen because I know that it's smaller than the 2013 model.
Let me see if I got the wiring right for this whole project though:

I based it all off this image:

1Q (Battery) - Goes directly to the battery (or is there a wire tap somewhere?)
1O (Acc) - Attached to the power on the back of the cigarette lighter
1V (Light) - Attached to the lights of the cigarette lighter
1X and 1P (Ground) - Grounded somewhere
Tablet - Micro usb in tablet connected to a secondary cig lighter socket or connected to a 12V ACC.

o0o0o,
Have you tried to fit a new Nexus 7 in the hood? The current 7 is almost exactly the same size as the previous: it's only 1.5cm taller

I haven't taken the hood apart just yet, but I have placed it in front of the existing nav to get an idea. It's 200mm horizontally, but then the usb/audio connectors add significantly to that width.

I refuse to punch a hole in the side of the nav housing to make it all fit and have gone to great lengths to make sure that won't be necessary.

I should have it installed within a week. I'll post some pics and whatnot of the teardown and what was involved to install it when it's all done (in a new thread).

Why you don't want to put holes in the sides to make it fit?

Cool, if I finish first, hopefully I'll have some tips I can share. If you do, I'd be interested to hear how it went. I'm sure we'll be doing things a little differently.

The placement of the audio plug in particular (top right) would make a hole extremely obvious, unless I positioned it so the power button was facing downward. I'd rather keep the power button up top, so I can theoretically take off one of the bumper sticker things on the front top left of the nav housing and press the power button without taking apart the whole set-up.

I have my Nexus 7 coming in on Tuesday, still looking for an OEM navigation housing but i've emailed about 15 different places that are currently carrying them. Hopefully I can get some advice/opinions from you guys if you happen to install it before me!
