Question Nav Controls

Did you already have the stock nav? If so, were you able to do anything with the stock nav controls - the joystick/buttons?

I'm finding it difficult to find any information about that aspect of the stock nav.

The stock nav controls are probably best left disconnected. I've contemplated a BT touchpad in their place but haven't found the right touchpad yet.

Mine did not come with the Navi stock, so no buttons by the shifter.

Yeah, the biggest problem is going to be a clean fit for that space. It's unfortunate that no one ever found a lead on the JDM navigation controller, since it would have been easier to mod that cradle.

Edit- *Actually Awesome on/off will turn it on only if it is rotated up in portrait mode??*

for the ground i just found a ground point behind the radio somewhere.
Thanks for your response, Lareon! I don't think I'll need to fuse tap for the satnav hood, as I've got the stock nav system in the car. Just need to do the tablet....it sounds like you did a fuse tap straight to the cig lighter and then another from acc to the cig lighter? maybe I misunderstood, but why both?

I'd totally love to hear everyone else's methods for wiring power to their tablets as well!

I've decided to go with the Lenovo IdeaTab A2107 for my Car Tablet. shouldn't be any issues with mounting as it is ~1.5mm shorter than the Galaxy Tab 2. Also, another deciding factor for the Lenovo was the offiline GPS and built in internal roll cage. Probably will come in handy considering Virginia roads suck!!

Tasker will do the job, you need to root the tablet first and then install something called secure settings. this is how i do it with mine.
i used awesome on off but it stopped working in landscape mode when i did an update to android os. as you've found out.

i put a fuse tap from the fuse box and attached a cig lighter socket to it, this was to power the tablet, where as i took a direct line from the original cig lighter behind the dash to the satnav hood to power that.

i did it this way so

no.1 the wires for the hood were hidden away.

no.2 if i ever needed to do something with the usb cable for the tablet i could have it behind the glove box, so now if i need to connect my laptop to it i can reach behind pull out the cig lighter socket adapter and just plug the usb into it.

also handy if for some reason the tablet loses charge,,, which it shouldnt, but i can use the socket to connect to a portable power supply i have.

Free Hotspot for Galaxy S3

Just wanted to add this,
If you have a galaxy s3 and want to hotspot for free you can download a widget called "HotSpot Toggle Widget" (search in google play store for Fattin Hotspot) add the widget to a home screen. This widget bypasses the phone checking to see if you pay for hotspot and turns it on. I then use a app called FoxFi (free version sets a limit before it disconnects and you have to restart the app).

This works on Galaxy s3 running Jellybean 4.1 (not sure if it works for other versions), for AT&T and Verizon. It will not work for Sprint.

This is a good solution for some of us who are on "grandfathered" unlimited data plans, that do not have hotspot included. I've called AT&T and they said I would have to downgrade to a 5gb data plan with hotspot to have it, which is stupid, since it's the same price.

For that app you have to set it to turn off the screen when the tablet flips down. Sorry been awhile since I messed with it, that's all I remember off the top of my head.

Arduino stepper controll

Im trying to get the stepper motor in the hood to work with the arudino (unfortunately my hood is missing the original PCB), but I dont have much experience with electronics (im a doctor) and I was wondering if you could share the code you used on the arduino. I aiming to do something much more simple that your setup, open button to open the hood, tilt to reverse the stepper direction and close the hood.

That really is awesome.

I might look into getting a Nexus 7 fit when I've got everything sorted

Screen Display Size?

Did you guys have to cut the Navi Hood to fit the screen display, or did you use an app of some sort to fit the screen display to the opening of the Navi Hood?

You will have to trim back some plastic tabs on the inside to make it flush, and I had to cut some of the bottom off the hood so the screen would be centered.

Gotcha.....what about once the tablet is already mounted, did you have to resize the output display on the tablet so that everything was view-able through the navi hood opening?

That is a sweet set up. I would love to do that since I never use nav system.
Has anyone done this commercially yet?
That could be a nice gig.

I didn't re-size the display, but I did loose about 1/2cm (or less) all the way around. Can still hit all the buttons easily.

I changed phones in the middle of the project, so I'm missing about half the pics for it. A small parts list is on page 1.

How hard is it to actually do? would you need prior experience with cars?

I know virtually nothing about cars except my own (rx8)

I did mine in about a day. If you can get the stock hood, and surround with all the electronics and motor in place, have a tablet and a dremel it's really not hard at all.

I did it slightly different, I cut out the motherboard to front panel connectors from an old computer and just used those on the pins on the back of the nav controller (was easier than soldering or any of that).

It's really not much harder than putting a aftermarket radio into a car. You will need to understand basic wiring diagrams, how to solder, and how to use a dremel.

It took me about 3 months start to finish for this project, but that included getting the hood, which took awhile to find. About 3 weeks for the stupid "L" shaped headphone jack to come in from china, and probably a week of me not wanting to give up the tablet to the car.
