Even at 300hp in the current RX8 assuming a similar weight of 2,900-3,000lbs its only going to be competitive for 2008/9. It will still be a good car, much better than the performance we have now but will not be class leading. It will have to contend with a new 370z, 135i, STI/Evo, Camaro, Challenger, new Mustang and so forth. Some of these will put out over 400hp or are highly tunable to produce more power.
If Mazda wants this to gain general acceptance it needs to be bulletproof. No chance of flooding, separate reservoir for oil with a real oil gauge, improved MPG and power/weight ratio that surpasses the competition or at least be increased as the design ages.
Even then it will take years of excellent reliability for people to begin to adopt it compared to proven piston technology.
Don’t get me wrong I think it’s great that they are continuing with the rotary. We need all the new thinking we can get.

and the 135i will be the only car within 500lbs of the weight, IF the weight stays the same in the car that the new motor goes into (doubtful). BTW, I wouldn't expect this motor in an 08/09 model.
again, what makes you think Mazda is trying to make this more than a niche car?

It sure doesn't have a turbo, does it?!? Good news for sure!
my notes:
Is that a single top mount injector?
still 2 spark plugs.
rotor shape looks very similar still but its a low res shot
no more Siamese port! That means the port configurations has changed, at least on the hot side, so porting may again be an easy power adder!
Looks like there are exhaust ports on the end plates AND the rotor housings.
Looks to me like a 6 port intake and 6port exhaust.
This thing is going to be very interesting when we start getting some real info about it.

Thanks Aipex8 for the first 16x pics that I've seen. I noticed a few things of interest including, only 2 spark plugs per chamber. I say "only" beccause some of us would have liked to see 3.

135i - 3440
370z - 3400 at least, even with the shorter wheelbase
STI/Evo - 3400ish
Camaro - 3700
Challenger 3650
Mustang 3550 at least
We have to remember the RX cars are not straight line cars. Granted the competitors will have more HP and torque, that is a lot of weight to push around a track; although the 135i looks great on a road course! I am not conviced we will see another RX8. I think the 8 will be retired and we will see a two door coupe weighing in at 2700-2800 pounds. And, to some of the comments listed on another thread, it appears the design of this new engine will be more friendly for power adders. I would place my money on a 2700 pound, 350 HP RX car over a tuned Z, 135i, Maro, or Stang on the track. I would argue that the GTR's should not think they would own a RX car on the track with those numbers...

it should be lighter than the renesis, the size isnt all that bigger. Iron weights a lot! My prediction is that this will be around 40lbs lighter than 13B-MSP.
Oh, how is it no more siamese ports? you can tell from the picture?
Also I think they changed the shape of the rotor dishes, to suit the DI injector more. If its not reflection, I think the top of the rotor dish is shaped to guide the fuel onto the dish.
Its 6 port intake and 3 port exhaust, same as Renesis. The "holes" on the rotor housings arent exhaust ports, they cut the "holes" to shave unnecessary weight off.

Also, have any of you thought of flooding yet? With DI I don't think we'll ever flood again.
And are they going to retire the 13B forever after the introduction of 16X. What about racing engines? Sideports are not as good as PP no matter how they improve it. Will we ever see a 16X periperal port race engine? R16X? R21X? R32X!!!!! (Monster with 1000hp...)

same here, since they're retooling so much for the 16X, it has got to go into more than 1 car.

800cc x 3 = 2400cc
800cc x 4 = 3200cc
