ah... now I see why the wheel are out away from the car.

They support the aero dynamics of the rear end.

I wonder how many MPG's you get with that design. 3 MPG for the tail?

I think for competitive purposes, Mazda needs to be able to advertise 300 hp for this car. Whether it actually achieves the advertised numbers be damned!

Actually, a straight linear interpolation of displacement yields 277 hp (1.3->1.55, actuall 1.6 would be even better) as others have already calculated. It seems to me that a linear increase would be displacement change with only a rotor width increase (assuming the current ports can breathe adequately for the increased size). So with the benefit of increased stroke, larger ports, DI, improved rotor/side housing, plus who knows what other minor improvements, I can see this thing actually making 300hp (not withstanding RG's argument for a lower redline of course)!

Also remember how much the Renesis was originally supposed to put out. First it was 250. Then 247. Then 238. Then people dyno it and get in the 220's (crank), etc, etc...

Hello everybody.

I've been reading this forum for a long time and in these last days I checked it daily to see if there was anything new.

Wow, what a piece of news today! DI, AL side plates and bigger displacement confirmed.
But a question comes to mind: does anyone think that the new rotary may have more than two spark plugs per rotor? I think that it would be useful with the longer combustion chamber of the 16x, but I don't see it mentioned anywhere.

Anyone with opinions (or better yet news) on this?

I think that would be a big plus. I believe that was one of the big improvements to the '91 26b Le Mans motor. It may be more complex with the DI setup if they use the DI "chamber" described in the SAE article MazdaManiac has in his database.

Well, if the injector is at the top of the chamber injecting toward the bottom, it should not interfere too much with the plugs.

Just my opinion.

I'd like to know if they are expanding the center exhaust ports at all. Of course that would put added stress on the e-shaft, right?

There might not even be center exhaust ports. white sheet design.

Seeing this is a clean sheet of paper design, as long as you support the e-shaft there (sufficient bearing without imposing too much drag) I would think it would not be an issue.

I assume they have computer modeling that did not exist when the 13B was designed in the 1970s. I have not kept up on this thread enough to know if that was mentioned.

Significant computer modeling is the difference between the LT-1 and the LS-1 (well that and a bunch of experience, etc. etc.). My fondest hopes is that the rotary engine takes a similar leap.

that didn't help the LS 1 overheating issues.

I always thought the bathtub combustion chambers in the rotors were a little simple. I wonder what some computer modeling would do to those? I mean rotors designed from scratch with CNC machines in mind may look totally different.

This will be a fun engine to examine and question.

And yeah there will be problems with this new motor too. I hope bad press (forum talk) is no worse than the Renesis has had.

That'll prevent people from buying the car so in my opinion, that's a good thing for us, bad for the company It'll make the car seem like an exotic.

I personally don't even like sunroofs or convertibles so I don't really care to see that concept come true.

I'd love to see this engine in the Kabura (or RX-5) and the current RX-8 ... the sooner the better. Finally, there'd be another rotary coupe (or convertible) but the old farts with kids could still have the more practical option. As far as I'm concerned the RX-8 is still unique and exotic in it's design to be good enough for this old fart.
