The car is definitely quicker after 80, contrary to the 0-60 time. I've surprised a few cars on the highway (before the turbo), even myself! There's something about the linear/wider torque band of the rotary at higher speeds that gives the RX-8 a definite advantage.

Comparing a civic to an RX8 is like comparing a crack ***** wearing make up to a brazilian model.

fail.

I have both cars, actually my brother owns the Si and I own the Rx8. We have come to the mutual agreement that the Rx8 > Si. We have gone against each other plenty of times, each one of us have driven both cars and although they are very equal during take off, that's were the similarities end.

Because a Civic Si is more practical (bigger interior, bigger trunk, MUCH bigger trunk opening <- key) and gets better gas mileage. Not to mention a Si is actually better equipped than a base RX-8. I mean you might as well apply to your argument to be "the RX-8 outhandles a Camry for a similar price, why would you ever want to buy a Camry?" All of these cars are at different points of the practicality/fun trade-off curve.

The Integra Type R, stock for stock, is faster than a RX-8 on track.

And Richard, the S2000 engines have oil consumption rates about similar to that of a typical Renesis engine.

What does that have to do with anything? And it's faster on any track huh? Impressive. I still have an SCC issue where they put an ITR up against a last gen Mustang GT on Button Willow. The GT got a faster time, so I suppose a 1999 Mustang GT is faster than an RX-8 "on track".

again I'm not saying the Si is faster than the RX-8.

My point is that the Civic gets a bad rep because its called a Civic. That's all I'm arguing here.
Then you buy an Acura and be done with it!

All and all theyre different cars with similar 0-60 times.......

I almost want to say this thread is a fail, but judging by the 7 pages, theyre is some arguements about these two as competitors.

IMO- Cant compare, too different.

The Civic SI is a good car. Close but not similar to an 8.

You want similar comare Sports car to Sports car. S2000 vs RX8

Geez, people get so offended these days when they're told certain cars are faster. The Integra Type R in Best Motoring at Tsukuba was faster than the RX-8. It was a 3rd generation Integra, but the 2nd generation Type R was supposed to be just as fast. I also wouldn't doubt the Mustang GT being faster than the RX-8 over Buttonwillow. Depending on track configuration, Buttonwillow is a bit of a power track with several long straights. Streets of Willow is a much tighter circuit than Buttonwillow, but even there a SVT Cobra was almost 2 seconds quicker than a RX-8. While the GT is a slower car than the SVT, Buttonwillow would reward the main advantage of the Mustang GT (power) more than Streets of Willow would. While the Mustang and RX-8 tend to be opposites, the ITR has the same strength as the RX-8, namely good handling. It about the same power curve with a little less power, but also about 400 pounds less weight and has a pretty well set up front diff in an attempt to gain more traction out of corners. The Integra Type R was Honda's raw beast for the track and really it's not a real shame that the RX-8 might be a bit slower on most circuits.

I love my RX-8 to death and really there's only one car I'd trade it for (hint, it's made by Honda, but isn't RWD), but the car is not invincible.

+1 I still remember that episode, the integra type R is a very potent and fun track weapon. It actually cornered faster than the rx8 because of its light weight and track tuned stiff suspension. Unlike the rx8 that car is uncomfortable for everyday driving though... I dont think you can even get power window for it (not sure about this)

Dude why are people trash talking down on the civic???
I dont feel that is right.. credit is due where its earned.. adn the little civic is a very economical car handles ok its an overall alright car.. its not vette int he straights but its quick..

theres even this guy who has proof hes done the 1/4 mile in 14.1 seconds on a stock SI

SO what if its quicker than the 8???

0-60 is nothing

0-60 is a ricer thing bro its like me saying ok lets race who evetr shifts to third first wins!!!

A 1997 STOCK ECLIPSE GST CAN beat an rx8
its 0-60 is in the high 6's but hey what about 60-100????
and yes A STOCK GST will beat a RX8 whoooptie doo daaaaa i knwo because i have one I had the engine rebuilt because it had a blown head gastket after that i sold it.. and it beat my rx with a misfire (sparkplugs)
and 3 oil leaks which were later fixed.. quick little car.

Who cares about 0-60

I wouldnt mind a civic.. its engine is really good its smooth.
FWD drawbacks though is loss of traction on a launches.. thats why rwd is quicker on the 0-60's

i do wish they made a civic with a K20a rwd that would be sweet honda needs to make more RWD cars they havent made anything that falls into my own personality.. i beleive that everyone chooses a car that fits their personality best

yea your right about that a civic is a sedan built to look like a sports car..

the rx8 is a sports car built to perform function as a sedan but in deep inside its a real sports car.. some people dont think so but it really is a sports car.. I lvoe the way the interior is and everything else... sometime i feel like this car was custom built for me seriously... any one else have that feeling??

i think if i wrecked it i would buy another one!!

Im a rotary person and always will be. my first rotary and i can sure as hell tell you it wont be my last..

I want to buy my little cousin a 2nd gen 7 I love the look of them.. the 3rd gen i tihnk are overratted i kinda liek the old retro look a little better

And how did the Integra get into the conversation again?

Rofl a stock GS-T will NOT beat an RX8. That was the competition for the 5th Gen Prelude. And without SOME sort of mods there is no way in ******* hell a Civic SI got 14.1. Weight reduction or something but no way in **** COMPLETELY stock 14.1 The fastest I've seen was 14.8 with slicks. 14.9 Power shifting without slicks.

Wtf? If suspension was it then the Prelude would stomp the civic. The Prelude SH ******* owns for handling. If honda still made them they would tear the RX8 a new hole. Not dissing the RX8 because I love it. It IS gonna be my next car. I'm just saying. The Prelude SH has fully-independent double wishbone suspension also.

Oh silly me... I forgot that because RWD lost it must of have been that the particular RWD vehicle wasn't modified/setup to compete and win races Yes the team is obviously racing for it's 'health'. We should all think this way and pass on our rwd defeats as such excuses (as if the RWD layout isn't enough of "advantage" therefore it's ego needs an 'excuse').

The examples I cited it just to clearly dispel the perception in this thread that RWD guarantees you a victory. RWD is a double edge sword and it does have it's compromises.

FWD isn't a big disadvantage until over 300hp or so if the car is well balanced and good overall. That's the general consensus I get from carpeople anyway

Now here we have a bit of an issue. It seems the general consensus among those that have owned both cars is that the RX-8 is a better handling car than the Prelude SH. Granted "handling" is such a nebulous term, but overall people have given the edge to the RX-8 in terms of turn-in, balance, grip, breakaway, exit, and transient characteristics so I think the RX-8 has the Prelude SH pretty well covered.

FWD's main disadvantage is on corner exit as the wheel doing the turning is suddenly also being asked to do the accelerating. You certainly don't need 300 hp to see the issues; my 180 hp Celica GT-S simply did not want to come out of a corner on the power. I had to play a waiting game with that car until it was pretty much all straightened out, or else I'd get bad inside wheelspin. By comparison, the RX-8 is absolutely rock solid on corner exit.
