Yes, it has been on the web-site for a wile now as the engine lack of power recall, however, the other recall listed I think is the 4206f recall from 2006. Did you get that done because the computer is showing it as open.

I had it checked in Spring of '07 (bought it used in '06) and was told it passed the vacuum check. Had the battery, spark plugs and taillights replaced during that exam. I'll double check my paperwork from that visit but recall it's listed.

What do you mean by the 'computer is showing it as open'? Is it supposed to remove the recall notice on MazdaUSA once I have it performed? If so then either my dealership is hosing me or they're not performing the step to notify Mazda. Since they definitely gave me the PCM flash I know they performed the latest and greatest. Aside from my car failing to start every time I pull it out of storage because it's flooded I haven't had any other problems.

I'm still pretty sure I didn't have the notice on my mazdausa page last month. I was going there a decent amount whenever I needed my VIN while doing my 'out of storage' routine of car registration, deflooding, etc. but maybe I was just missing it.

The short answer is that yes, when the recall is performed and entered into the computer as performed for your vehicle identification number, the Mazda web-site removes the recall notice from your owners' page. Since it is still listed, the dealer never entered the recall as performed. It is probably just as simple as that, and I check of the ECU level that your car is at will tell them whether the update was ever done. If you had the rest of it done, then I would seriously doubt that they would have missed the ECU update. My guess is that it is just a simple computer update error from the dealer, but when you get the new MSP16 recall done, I would ask them about the other as well.

Has any one noticed a difference in consumption? I have not driven enough to have had to add oil yet.

What does tsb and premix mean? should i be using 30 wt oil etc. Thank you for the help.

A"TSB" is a tech-service-bulletin. They are from Mazda to help the dealer-techs fix problems. Here is a dealer site that list them.

Premix is the adding of some lubricant to the gas in most cases. Mazda Rotary is a oil-injected engine, which means a small amount of oil is pumped into the engine to lubricate the apex seals and all the seals get a small amount. Most people (that premix) add 4-6 onces to each tank(some add more). Here is a thread that discusses it.

I hope you have been checking yours occasionally. The harder you drive the more it will burn. There is 1.8 quarts between the two marks on your dip stick. The rest of the world uses 5w30 or heavier weight oil. The US are set lighter at a 5W20 for emission reasons(a lot of us on here us the 5W30 for better protection).

I assume you meant to say "most people who premix add 4-6 ounces to each tank". Only a tiny percentage of RX-8 owners premix—or have ever even heard the term.

^Periodically, Mazda changes the programming of the engine's ECU (electronic control unit)—the chip that controls things like idle speed, how much oil is injected, etc. When computer types upgrade the programming of a chip, it's referred to as "flashing" the chip; hence the term. Mazda makes this latest programming—or "flash"—available to older cars, which can have their programming upgraded.

So "the latest flash" just means the most recent reprogramming of the ECU controlling the Renesis. Most owners want the latest flash.

Just to complete the description New Yorker; the ECU's EPROM (electrically programmable read only memory) chip is commonly called 'flash' memory and therefore installing new code is referred to as 'flashing.'

Similar to upgrading your computer's motherboard code.

You REALLY want to get these recalls done!
I just had my 8 in for these last week, and they did the vacuum check.
Failed.
So, they proceeded to perform the compression check.
Failed.

They tell me they will be replacing the engine shortly.

I am happy, as my 5 year/100,000km powertrain warranty expires this summer.
I am bummed out as this is the SECOND engine replacement for my 8..

sorry to be a newb, but if I go to the website and just plug in my vin, my recall work will come up? I was planning on getting my car in there soon for a vacuum/compression check anyways before the summer heat, so it might be good to get htis done too.

If you go to OWNER'S section of the MAZDAUSA website, you can enter your VIN and find what recalls are there for your car. However, the current engine TSBs were listed as a recall for about three weeks then pulled off the web-site. The last time that I checked they were still not listed as recalls, and I have heard of no one on the site getting an official recall notice from Mazda to do this, which means that it is a Technical Service Bulletin. The big difference of course being that Mazda will pay for a recall. You pay for a TSB.

You can check under the Tech section of this forum in a sticky thread that lists TSBs from Finishline's web-site. It has the 3-16-08 TSBs there if you want to read them.

Cool, thanks. So just a TSB for now huh... sucks.. maybe i'll wait on that now then...

btw, for people that are out of warrenty, do they have to pay even for recalls?

its not a recall and never was because it is not filed with the government and is not a safety concern.

it is a special kind of TSB labeled a Mazda Special Program. By using this designation Mazda is telling the dealers to treat this as if it were a federallu mandated RECALL and perform all of the work listed to any and all vehicles that enter their bays for any work at all. AND they must do the work on any existing dealer stock

I have mine scheduled to go in on Wednsday and hope for a good outcome. I bought it with just over 60k miles on it >.< I do have a pretty rough idle at times but have never had it die on me. I will post how it runs this weekend...if there is any difference. The dealership said it is not going to cost me anything so lets hope they stick to that. It is changing the oil mix for the car from what they tell me so is anyone still doing the premix? I kind of enjoy the extra time I have at the gas pump.....gives people time to look and gives me time to notice them looking....lol.

Ugh is right.

It WAS listed as RECALL on Mazda's web-site for weeks, then it was dropped from there. There are members who received recall slips from dealers but never from Mazda. There are members who have reported having the dealer pay for the flash as if it were a recall and telling the customer that it was a recall.

I agree that it is a TSB, but Mazda made this about as confusing as anybody could.

Also, not all recalls have to be safety concerns. Recalls are also performed at manufacturer expense for engineering faults, but that is at there election.

Personally, I just got back from having this done, and paid $45 for the flash. The car runs smoother.
