As I mentioned in an earlier post, I had them check for an updated flash last week when the car was in for service, and the work order had come back stating that there were no new updates available (the tech had put down "rough idle" to allow the flash, had there been one available, to be billed under warranty). That was the week following the March 14th release of the MSP16 notice.

Seems Canada doesn't have this yet.

MSP 16 out of warranty 2/27/08

I had MSP 16 done today for $91.84. I wanted a couple of things done on car but had to change plans because of this cost. The catch 22 is Big Mazda told me since I did not have any other service done they could not help with this customer courtesy. They have a record of me calling about sever loss of power. To be clear I would have spent $100 on other services for what I considered engine warranty coverage. It is a cold world if you are a orphan. I have 27,700 miles on my car in 4 years.

Shouldn't this be covered under the power train warranty? Did you try working that angle?

I was told no. I believe if they could find a loss of power I would have been covered. The problem is it cost about $85 to trouble shoot this if they could not. I was quoted $121 for carbon cleaning. That is a spray can special. $91 here $85 there and another $121 starts to add up fast. It was 45 degrees in Florida this morning and this is a hot weather problem. I rarely drive 75 miles at a time and it takes a while to go "out of tune" for me.

I just got off the phone with my local dealer and they are stating they will nto do the bulletin as they can not reproduce the symptoms. i was told I could pay $92 to have it done if I really wanted it but they won't do it under warranty. Any ideas?

Maybe someone needs to call MNAO and get the skinny on who gets the reflash and why?

Ok, just had my Flash done this morning. Idle is definatly smoother, throttle response seems lots better. and the Butt Dyno says that it feels like more power at lower RPM. Or, maybe thats from the better throttle response... but anyway, it feels better. Dealer gave me no hassle at all on getting this done.

I realized my mistake and went to the dealership I initially talked to over the phone and they gave me no trouble with the TSB work. Waited for about 1.5 hrs and the invoice noted that they spent 0.6 hrs doing the MSP16 recall PCM flashing (which is twice as long as the Mazda 0.3hrs estimate).

However, it looks like the service dept didn't bother following Mazda's recommended procedures as they didn't attach the blue campaign label nor the authorized modifications sticker to the car, nor did they attach a battery charger during the performance of the procedure (I knew b/c I had petroleum jelly on the terminals to prevent corrosion and none of it was removed).

Car drives the exact same as when I drove it in, which is good

PS- the invoice calls this TSB a "recall" for some weird reason & the dealership just found out about this program this morning so I bet I was their first case.
+1... good stuff.

I'd call around to see which dealers in your area would be willing to do the TSB (for free/under warranty). If you read my post, 2 dealers, 2 completely different attitudes toward servicing my car.

If u're still under Bumper to Bumper warranty.

Print a copy of the TSB, highlight the part where it says :

*UNDER THE MAZDA SPECIAL PROGRAM (MSP16), ALL CURRENT DEALER INVENTORY AND RETAILED VEHICLES FOUND TO BE WITHIN THE ABOVE VIN RANGE, AND PRODUCED BETWEEN APR. 10, 2003 THROUGH NOV. 9, 2007, MUST BE INSPECTED AND REPAIRED ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS CONTAINED IN THIS SERVICE BULLETIN.*

and this part :

When an applicable retail vehicle is brought into the dealer for any type of repair or scheduled maintenance,
perform an eMDCS Warranty Vehicle Inspection and check the status of MSP16. If status of MSP16 is “OPEN”
inspect and repair if necessary, the vehicle according to the procedures contained in this service bulletin.

then u can shove these TSB papers up their asses

Hmm

I went today to check it out and the service manager I had worked with before told his tech to just make something up and give me the flash. Hahah...nice. I'm under warranty by the way so....I would have argue'd regardless.

It has been a couple of days since my car was flashed and it definitely feels stronger. Nothing major but the car does seem to pull harder than before. Does it take a few days for the new flash to settle in or am I just imagining this?

Trims are reset and can take several drive cycles to establish a correction factor. You can get the same feeling if you pull your ROOM fuse every 2 months or so. I get my car back tommorow, having the full decarb and flash. We will have to see, as I am a bit of a SeaFoam ***** and have used it every possible way, including removing the UIM and spraying (Deep Creep) in down the runners. I am curious to see if Mazda's Miracle-in-a-Can engine cleaner can do anything the seafoam and Lucas UCL cant.
