Newly Revised RX-8 Service Bulletins

You have to go here and read them, then let us know what you think, they are on the top....This is big.....Please print out a copy, it makes it so much easier to get things done correctly the first time. I have driven more then 525,000 miles(total between them all) on Seven Mazda Rotary engine cars, Now I will Premix for the first time!
From what Mazda has been doing with its "TSB-MSP" and what I have read it seems like a simple and smart thing to do at this point. I have 35K on my 8 and now have also gone to the 5W30 oil at the same time. The mechanic came in the waiting room and asked why I was asking for 5W30. I said in the past seven rotary cars I ran 20W50 and had no problems. Mazda only recommend the 5W20 to meet CAFE and the rest of the world asked that you use 5W30 or higher in hot climates as I live in. I looked in the door jam and I did get the sticker too, with new flash# on it. It seems to run great as before. In the manual it recommends 5W20 but it also says in hotter climates use heavier viscosity.

So what flash are we on now?

And what does this say about the usefulness of premix?

delhi 03-17-2008 12:54 AM

Awesome!

Great!! I've got the symptons as described...once in a while crappy idle and sometimes the engine will die because of it. The only problem is I'm beyond the 60k mark. Any chance I'll get this TSB done for free?

mine just got taken in for this, when coming to a stop, rpm will drop and car will shake then it shuts right off, takes a few mins to get it started back up.. I didnt see this until just now, Hopefully powertrain warrenty covers since I have 55k on it

r0tor 03-17-2008 08:33 AM

looks like mazda is tired of replacing engines because they are all carboned up... i agree with that decision as its cheaper for them and makes the engines reliability look much better in the long run

also, the Cobb AP flashes are built off of the U flash i believe

nycgps 03-17-2008 08:42 AM

Hohoho ~~~~

Damn I have RB Flash .... hmm ... and I premix so ....

Maybe I should just get the Mazda's *cleaning* kit and do the cleaning myself no ?

Huey52 03-17-2008 08:44 AM

A red line a day ...... No problems here ('05 March build). :-)

expo1 03-17-2008 08:51 AM

Is this going to be a recall or just a TSB? My warranty is long gone.

Celronx 03-17-2008 10:08 AM

It looks like they will be for warranty work only. That's what it says at the bottom of the "engine cranks no start" bulletin.

Duke15 03-17-2008 10:20 AM

Good night - this is MAJOR! I've been complaining about these exact symptoms for over a year and they keep giving me new engine mounts - which do nothing to solve the problem. It looks like the next time I bring it in, I will probably be looking at finally getting my problems fixed, or a new engine...

IS a TSB. :( It sucks for people who is out of warranty, it also sucks for ppl who has RB flash like me :(

Now Im thinking, should I go flash this thing, I dont think I really need this flash cuz I premix the whole time :) I never had any engine power loss or hard to start when hot issue so .... will see what happen.

more like they gonna clean ur engine with the stuff. Then reflash it.

Parmer8 03-17-2008 10:53 AM

For us out-of-warranty folks, I guess we're SOL. I wonder how much the dealership is going to squeeze out of me this time.

Red lining here and there and driving hard doesn't seem to solve this issue (at least for me). I bought mine new on Aug 04 with 61k miles with recently new plug, coils, wires, and cat. I am starting to look at my rpm at every stop. If it continues to dip below 725 or so, I have to blip the engine or it's going to die.

CTrx8 03-17-2008 10:55 AM

dumb question but for this TSB would it be under the bumper to bumper warranty (which i just passed due to # of years) or the extended powertrain warranty? i'm not having these symptoms now but want to know if i should even bother worrying if it happens later and it's part of the bumper to bumper.

delhi 03-17-2008 11:02 AM

^ I interpret it as engine work... so powertrain warranty.

JRichter 03-17-2008 11:24 AM

This is huge. Thanks for the info. I guess if you are still under warranty you can simple schedule an appointment with Mazda Service just to have inspection and MSP16 done...

Huey52 03-17-2008 11:27 AM

As a TSB I presume needed only if you're having the cited anomalies? It would seem that the 'voluntary emission recall' a year or so back already introduced add'l seal lubrication. But I suppose a newer flash is always a good idea. Next oil change (upcoming) ....

Sushi 03-17-2008 11:36 AM

I just had mazda do a refab engine last month. Would it be likely that this was already done to the car? Also for carbon build I redline once a day but bought the car used and don't know if the original driver did this, so would my refab engine negate this or does a refab not put in new parts where the carbon builds up?

CyberPitz 03-17-2008 11:39 AM

Well, something to ask the techs to do when I go in for the first oil change, I guess! I've not had these issues, but why wait?

Huey52 03-17-2008 11:41 AM

For Sushi - A refab (aka re-manufactured) engine is almost completely broken down and rebuilt, so you can be assured any carbon build up on the rotor seals was removed. It's also thoroughly tested prior to issue to service stock.

As far as this new PCM flash, you'd have to ask your dealer. At the least you've probably got the older "voluntary emission recall" flash if the former owner kept up with such recalls.

prospectjtaz 03-17-2008 11:43 AM

For the milky dipstick, I know it was a revised dipstick, but how come now their roviding also a breather mod, was this always a case, had I missed this or did they just add the breather mod too? It also looks like some of theses TSBS are getting you free coils, and sparks from the stealership. The MSP16 flash mentions that its for engine problems that occur in high ambient, do you think Canadians will also be gettin the same flash?
