Akron/Cleveland 8 Owners.
That's what I attempted to do when I took mine apart.
Figured I could fine the "weak link" in the assembly, but everything measured OK.
The motor overall is probably just too weak.
I'll have my car full with the trans-jack, 4 large jack stands, my jack, and other tools so its probably best if I take my car.
And also if we run late, I'll probably just go straight to work from his house.
We try to meet at least once a month, either for dinner or installs/repairs/PMs.

Might want to contact Paul @ Mazmart and ask him if they'll fix up a core this winter. Could probably save a hundred bucks or so to have them reman it and it'll probably run better than a new non-upgraded starter. I know they did that for a while but they might not offer it anymore.
So people are getting up to his place around 8 AM tomorrow? Most of my tools are down in Akron but I've got my socket set, brake set, and a few other bits and pieces in my 8's trunk. Probably can at least help Steve change out his pads and endlinks. Make sure you bring an open ended wrench and an allen key that fits your links Steve. I won't be able to hang out for long but should be able to swing a couple hours if it means watching somebody drop their tranny.
Wonder where my work gloves are...
I didn't have continuity with my solenoid, but with all the rust and crud I probably just wasn't measuring at a good ground point.
The brushes (assuming thats what you meant) were fine, that is what I first thought it could be since brushes wear out after awhile.
Rather not waste the money on a reman that'll just go out after a couple years anyway.

I just had the car towed home... i drove it to work today thinking i could baby it there and back... clutch completely burned up about 15min from home.
Anyway, its in the garage now, jacked up in the rear enough for the tires to be off the ground... i laid down a tarp under it so any leaking transmission fluid isn't an issue...
BTW if we are going to be working on another car too i can free up my 2nd garage and stick someones car in there.
And if im not up at 7am, just knock on the door and bug my parents... they will come wake me up haha... im not much of a morning person, your welcome to call me over and over again too

Doc (et. al.)
I would love to meet everyone that comes. I have some stuff going today, but will try to head over for a little while later this morning. This is right around the corner from me. I had no idea.
Thanks,
Doug

Well long story short for them who was not present... we ran into an interesting issue
The teeth came off the flywheel, allowing it to just free spin... which makes it very difficult to remove the flywheel...
The teeth came off the flywheel, allowing it to just free spin... which makes it very difficult to remove the flywheel...
It was a pretty bad sign when I removed the starter and a clump of fuzz that used to be part of the clutch disc jumped out at me.
Then finding more clutch disc material scattered around the pressure plate (not even removing it yet) was a good indication that it was gone.
While attempting to remove the pressure plate I installed my flywheel stopper that prevents it from spinning (pressure plate bolts to the flywheel).
But when I went to remove the first bolt on the pressure plate, it spun around!
I'm watching the pressure plate spin, but the teeth of the flywheel stayed stationary!
Another bad sign!
We managed to get the pressure plate bolts out by jamming a large pry-bar against it so it wouldn't spin.
After removing the pressure plate we noticed that the disc was worn down to the rivets and almost no material was left.
The flywheel also had a nice gash on it so it will definitely need replaced.
The flywheel's teeth portion is more like a pressed-on "ring" and it just came right off.
We tried several ideas to prevent the flywheel from spinning (since my stopper is useless now) while attempting to remove the big 54mm nut, but we had no success.
So we suggested that he get/borrow an air compressor and impact wrench to get that off.
He'll try to get that off during the week and if successful, we can pick up next week where we left off.
Or if he can't get it off, tow it to a transmission shop and have them remove it.
Then we can reassemble everything next weekend.
Either way, we are hoping to get the finish next weekend.
Tim took some pics. Maybe he can post those along with the flywheel.

under statement of the century... it looked like the transmission coughed up a hairball. . .the size of a racoon.
Hopefully airtools will work. . . Personally I think this is going to be one for the shop to take care of. There just wasn't any good way to brace the flywheel without better tools.
Doug, it was nice to meet you, Doc, thanks for stopping out and getting me out from under the car for an hour or so!
Hope the weather holds for tomorrow for Lorain. I won't be there though.

Doc,
Per our discussion yesterday regarding sways: I didn't know that AP just brands Progress as their own. . .

Brian, Tim & Jon:
It was very nice meeting all of you. Sorry the clutch change did not go well. It happens like that once in a while.
Brian - Congrats on your performance racing. What tire pressure did you run?

Tim- I talked with Brian and he offered to stop by your place Saturday with some air tools and help break that flywheel nut off.
So if you can't get it off, just wait for us instead of paying to tow it somewhere.

Jon + Brian:
Do you think the airtools will really make that much of a difference? I understand they'll use impact, but we still don't have a good way to keep the flywheel from spinning. That was the root problem we really ran into.
The other option I was thinking of is if Brian has a small welder. We could put a couple spot welds back on the flywheel which would allow us to use Jon's little flywheel brace tool. Don't know if we have a portable welder though.

In my own endeavors, no success again with the endlinks. Tried using the allen wrench, but its too rusted. Tried using the vice grips, but just couldn't get a good enough hold on it to get the nut loose. Its hard to do without an extra set of hands.

real quick, and I'll reply to the rest of everyone later...
Steve, don't get the AP bars. The AP front bar is a solid bar. It WILL be too stiff for the car. I know a guy with them and he has the front on full soft and the rear on full stiff and the car pushes like nobodies business. Only get the AP bars if you like understeer.
More on that later and I'll address everyone elses posts, as Jon is on his way to my house right now because my car has sprung an oil leak in the OMP area.
I'll update with what we find out
