TO ALL:
Does the 2005 6mt have a 4 or 5 year powertrain warrenty? Besides needing a new motor, my tranny just started doing the following Friday morning:

So after a 700km highway roadtrip the tranny developed this awfully loud whine under load in all gears except 5th, and was occasionally hard to engage 4th. Dealership is getting me a new transmission now. Maybe this would be a good time to get a lightweight flywheel and do the clutch as well. I was going to stick with Mazdaspeed.

Warranty is as follows:
4 year/40,000 Miles Bumper to bumper
5 year/60,000 Miles Powertrain
8 year/100,000 Miles Engine

So here is the final update with my car. I would recommend Mike over at Suburban Mazda Sterling Heights. He's definitely helped me out a huge amount. I could not thank him enough.

Work being done to the car under warrenty:
-New motor
-New tranny
-$200 reimbursed to me because they charged me for a item that was suppose to be warrentied last time.

Woooooo

Hey guys I am new to the forums and fairly new to owning an 8. I was wondering if there are any planned Detroit meets anytime soon?

The warm weather the passed few days got me super excited about my car......I forgot that we live in MI and it will be snowing before the end of the week. Anyway, when it does warm for more than a few days I'll be excited to meet up with other owners.

I don't check in on this forum much, but that was me. I don't think there are a whole lot of other RX-8's in Ann Arbor with mudflaps and CA plates.

Also, I noticed you asked about Ralph Thayer. I don't go there because it's a bit far from me, but I know the parts manager and he's a real good guy and very into racing. In fact, Thayer Auto sponsors the Detroit SCCA rallycross series. If you do drop in, you'll probably find a photo of my car too.

New Rotary & Engine owner

Hi guys! A new RX8 owner here in Michigan. Just got an awesome deal for a used 04 RX8 6MT GT with 39k on it. I just lost my company car, so I got this one because it is just a sexy looking car. Then, I read all the horror stories online after I had already purchased it. I started feeling the buyer's remorse. Then I did some more research and found out that you just need to give it some extra love and care. I know the mpg is going to suck because it is a rotary, but what do you expect from a sports car... It is going to need me to give it more oil and warm it up properly. It's like having a HOT girlfriend... of course they are going to be high maintenance.
SO, anyways, the car got shipped and I got to drive it. I fell in LOVE with this thing the moment I drove it. The way it handles, the sound of the engine, and the overall design. But what do you know... the very next day, there is a burning smell and the CEL comes on. Take it to SESI and they tell me that it needs a brand new engine. haha. It's of course covered under the warranty but it's going to be there until this Thurs or Fri. Sigh... I want to drive it again!
Well, I guess I techincally got a brand new car for my money. Besides, it's snowing this week and I don't have all season tires on it yet. Any recommendations on the tires?????? My friend said GoodYear Eagle F1 or something??
Let me know if any meets come up. I would love to see other RX8s. And if anyone has any advice for me on my RX8 driving it in MI, please hit me up. I would love to hear any helpful information because this is my first rotary.

Oh, and to The Korean - I am The Other Korean. 안녕하세요!

sorry to hear about your bad engine luck! thankfully there is a great warranty on the engine.

as for ownership advise, i'd recommend snow tires for the winter, and summer tires for the rest of the year. the car will be a lot more fun that way!

other than that, it sounds like you are already aware of the rx-8 piccadillos, so i just say to have fun!

How long was your 8 in the shop for the engine? Great warranty on these cars. Treat it right and you shouldn't have any problems. I've had mine for 8 months now(last 4 mostly in the garage at home) with no problems whatsoever. I have better luck driving WITHOUT the traction control on in the snow. BTW I'm up for a get together.

That was me flashing. The yellow is a sharp car, it really jumps out of the crowd.

Sesi has treated me alright. they, the sales people at least, are not big fans of the eight. the shop guys seem cool, but i don't know how much experience they have with the eights . . . there haven't been a lot of them around here.

I agree, pretty sweet deal on the new motor. You gotta love that warranty!

My rx8 has been in the shop since last last Thursday. He told me that it should be done by last Thursday, but now is telling me that it will be done this coming Tuesday. When I dropped it off, he said - "I should get the engine in by Tuesday and it will take one day for us to drop it in." Now he is saying, "Your engine is here, but there are 2 other engines before yours, and it's a big job. I mean, it's going to take awhile." He also told me that he wasn't sure if my rental was covered and that he's working on it. I followed up with HIM 3 times regarding it, and always got a vague answer. Then, I spoke to someone else and they said - "only basic warranty will cover the rental." sigh... I don't understand how the Service Manager (the guy who is taking care of me) is being like this. I think my job got pushed back...

I can't stop thinking about driving that rx8.

Being in business myself I always have a tendency to tell clients a finish time a little sooner than what's realistic. I guess I feel that I'll lose business if I say it's gonna be too long until it's done. One thing that works on me is if the customer really gets on me (not to say they are being rude) to finish the job. Stay on him and make him give you a realistic time frame.

Hoorah more problems... This time with a new motor

2005 RX8 GT 6MT
Car: ~435XX miles
New Motor: ~6XX miles
Rebuilt Trans: ~6XX miles
Clutch: Original clutch
Mods: Intake, cat delete race pipe, catback exhaust

So I haven’t taken the car back to the dealer yet, but I'm already having major problems with the new motor... could be the clutch, but I'm pretty sure it's the motor.
When it's cold and you start the car it either dies right away or it stays running til you put it in gear and start tot drive... then it dies. Now I know you have to warm the car up before you drive it, but do I have to warm it up every single time the car itself is cold? I was under the impression that it only needs to be done once in the morning. I started noticing the problem around Sunday night. Actually it wasn't bad til then.
Sunday night... car hadn't been driven for a few hours and went to go get food. Put it in 1st and drove 100 yards perfectly fine. Then after that it started to stutter like it wanted to die... and got "bouncy" like you weren't giving it enough gas. Pulled over, let the car warm up a little and then it drove semi fine.
Monday morning... I needed to move the car at work. Again it hadn't been driven for about 3 hours and moved it. Put it in gear and started driving... it died. Started it back up and let it warm up. Fine after that.
Tuesday (today) morning... Ready to go home in the morning started the car to let it warm up and it died instantly. It revved to about 3/4XXX and instantly died without touching it.
Things I've noticed over the past couple days. In the lower rpms, it feels like it stutters and isn't getting enough fuel or air or something. It's mainly between 25XX and 5XXX rpms. It almost feels like it wants to get up and go, but can't. Also, my wideband gauge reads "---" when I'm about half way down on the gas. It will sometimes read in the 17/18 range, but mainly it reads "---" til you get floor it then it AFR's drop to around 12.X. Last but not least the check engine light blinks more than normal. I have a cat delete race pipe on so it's on all the time, but it never blinked this much when I had the old motor in. It's blinking before the red line mark... like around the 4500/6 area. One thing to note... when you're driving it like an every day driver it has the problem/hesitation... when you floor it it does perfectly fine.
Anyone have any idea?

That was me in Mt Clemens. It's actually Black Cherry(Shinka) we've met before . Now , onto your car. It does sound like a fuel problem. I was going to say not enough fuel, but maybe with the 'flooring it and it runs fine' method you might be getting too much fuel? There's also the throttle positioning sensor(hesitating) and probably five other things it could be. At least the dealer should be able to experience the problem. BTW I've not ever had a problem with mine whether I warm it up first or not.

yeah you don't have to warm it up completely before you drive it. a minute after starting is probably enough, just don't rev it high until it's warmed. you have to warm it up fully before you shut if off. just take it back to the dealer and have them work it out

Haha I thought that was you... just couldn't remember your screen name on here. I thought to myself... "the only other rx8 I know of in Mt Clemens is the guy with that shinka..." Wooo what were you doing there? I was on Southbound gratiot turning right onto Cass... I wish I would of gone the other way though, haha.

I thought about it last night and I think you're right. It's either the fuel pump or fuel filter I suppose. I was cruising around last night, my check engine light was blinking like it has been doing for the past week, and as I went to get on it the car wouldn't go past 7k... it boggled down and made a stuttering movement if that makes sense. However, as the night when on and the car was driven more and it didn't have any problem whatsoever or from what I noticed. But ya, I think it's a fuel problem fer shur. Going into the dealer later today after work.

yeah, get that car back to the dealer asap!

one thing i've noticed (and get annoyed by) is that when i start my car up in the morning, the thing immediately tachs up to 3K+ rpms. that must be great for a cold engine.

I figure I should add myself to the list of 8 owners in Ann Arbor. If you see a titanium Grey 8 with a GA plate, give me a flash.

Welcome. The grays are multiplying, hopefully we won't match the weather much longer!
