Under 40k?

Your dreaming
If they want people to pay that much for another rotary engined car, they'd best offer another 8 year, 100k engine warranty right out of the gate for the piece of mind.

I'm confused. Is that possible, to use the same architecture for fwd and rwd? That has to be wrong.

I seriously doubt this would be the case with the new RX-7. As I mentioned before, the crowd here in the US that has been waiting for this car is not what I would call 'budget mindset' individuals.

I don't know. There are definitely some die-hards with some money but I would suggest that they need to win over a whole new crowd as well.

If the car will be priced 'up there', then I definitely see the 'die-hards' as the primary target.

But if the price is not as unreachable, then RX-8 crowd is still around

Even with the best marketing in the world, very few people from the general public would be willing to pay top dollar for a rotary engine car...unless we are talking about something with a bunch of horses.

Projected release 2017 right? I'm fairly upset about it.

Yeah but what i have gathered from reading this thread is that MOST people want both.

What is affordable to one person may not be affordable to another.

They always have been. That would be nice but it is unrealistic.
Thank you

I think 35-37 grand as a base price is fine. I'd rather they do it right and charge a little more for it than build to a price and mess it up. They won't be able to compete with Mustangs, Genesis coupes as far a bang for the buck. I would target the cayman if doing an RX7 and make it more upscale and dial up the performance. make it more of a a supercar. If doing a RX8 which is a more practical package then they need to make it more affordable.

RX7 target: Corvette base, 370Z, Cayman, maybe even Lotus Evora. As far as price it could be anywhere between 370Z-Cayman, as long as performance is there. I would make it as bulletproof as possible. The RX8 was a failure there.

Tracking on the same thing. Look, if I'm going to pay 40K I will indeed buy a used Cayman. It's a beautiful car!!! I have stated previously, keep it slightly below 40K and we may indeed have a winner. People want it all these days so you have to accomidate that, have to do it. Price, performance, quality....do that and it will be one of the best stories for years.

So many naysayers on this site... Can we not be somewhat happy just knowing the same company that bought us the FD is making a true RX7 successor? None of us know the styling, performance figures, price etc so why get worked up at this point?

Welcome to last week Autoweek. However, I found this quote interesting.
Emissions and fuel economy haven't exactly been areas of strength for past rotary power plants, but absolutely no one with a soul has ever cared.

Since I enjoy your thought process and perspective in some areas, I would like to know: What would it have to be at $40k for you to buy it over the used Cayman? What would the big deciding factor have to be for you?

I would like to see Mazda rise in value in general myself, and I believe it would be interesting if someday the term 'Made in Japan' would be hold the same authority in the US as 'Built in the Deutschland'.

Paul.

Good point. This is years...years down the road. We now have some confirmation that this car could in fact be reality. The last two projects were good sports cars, not perfect by any means, but both delivered something completely different than what everyone else was plopping out at the time. All signs point towards Mazda continuing this progression.

that goauto quote is wrong. ive seen that same thing written differently somewhere else and it didnt come across that way. in fact there was some noise about a new cx-7/-9 that had that same wording- being built off the mazda 6 cx-5 platform. the mx-5 would not , the writer probably conflated the idea of sky-active architecture with specific platforms

Im always amazed at the amount of bitching and complaining that the human species is capable of. FFS...the greatest news that any of us could have been given at a point in time when I didnt expect to hear news like this for several more YEARS and people can do nothing but bitch...
I guess the number of rotorheads shrinks everyday....

Actually, it already does, but not in the performance car segment, with very few exceptions.

When people think of Japanese cars, they think good reliability with good value price point. Even if it is a Lexus, Infiniti, or an Acura. They don't really think of taking a Toyota Camry, and slicing up their nearest canyon road. Heck, most Americans don't live anywhere near a mountain road, and the bulk that do, hate driving in them, most of the year.

When people think of German cars, they think of power, refinement, and luxury, at a high cost. They might even put safety in that thought process, as German manufacturers are usually first with coming up with new safety devices, and charging a premium for them.

How can Mazda get shoppers to compare their products directly against BMW, Porsche, Audi, VW, and Mercedes?

Honestly, the only real way is to have one of the competition's cars on their dedicated Mazda lots, and allow the shopper to test drive both vehicles back to back. Have a list of common maintenance items, and show the price difference between the two for a normal service, vs you just wore out the brake pads, and now you have to replace pads and rotors at all 4 wheels on both cars.

That's the best way to do it, in my opinion.

BC.
