Mazda isn't gonna have any problems reaching it's weight goal. Hell a base model fd weighs in the low 2700lbs range. Now consider that were dealing with no turbos and a larger displacement all aluminum engine that's already lighter than the smaller renesis, plus modern day exhaust is much lighter than that anker of a system the fd had. So you can easily see Mazda hitting their weight mark. Also, don't understimate the added torque were gonna get from the 16x longer storke. I've menchioned a while back that I felt the torque delivery will be 20b like. Trust me that's a great thing. I strongly feel the new rx7 will be a much better performer than most here will give credit for.

me too, with the new engine i would expect everything to happen 1000rpm lower than the Rx8, so peak power should be like 7500 instead of 8500.

what i expect vs what we actually get could be different however

My RX7's redlined at 7000 rpm. The S3 ran out of air, due to a restrictive air cleaner, a few hundred rpm before that.

Yea I've been curious about this engines rev range also "especially with it's massive rotors'". The really nice thing here is by the time this car releases, Mazda would have had nearly 10years of development time with the new engine.

The stock fd had a similar problem. With the seq twins, the hp peaked at 6,700rpms. The power started falling off quickly afterwards.

A little birdie (In Japan) told me the new engine is still a high revver. Expect 9000 to remain .

Ash, say what you will about Ford. But, it seems to me that about the time Mazda and Ford split, owners started having problems getting a warranty claim on their engines.

Let's see them! Be nice to know what's coming, just like the RX8 when it was a concept, we will either like it or hate it right away, visually (hatch, two door)

uhhh--now Paul you know the current engine is not really a 9K engine.
Yes you can rev it to 9K but there is less power there and you reduce the life expectancy.

Would be great if they can make it 10,000 rpm. It would be great marketing keypoint too to sell the car. A nice even magic 10k rpm wows anyone!

Especially now that cars like LFA and 458 rev to 9k as well.

^ Those both look like winners, the silver one looks like a $40k car and similar to the new Mazda 6, but the red one screams Furai and has Winner written all over it.....along with a $70k price tag. Someone needs post the pics. Either way, if it ends up looking like either of the two I will be all over it with check book open. Mazda has to be careful, Toyota does have the Supra coming back....

Dude seriously I hope they take that into consideration and engineer the crap out of, yet make it still easily accessible with a open ecu for tuning and all that other groovy stuff. even though those pics are old I do like both of them I think either would be nice, I just hope they make them build-able from factory so you can pick and choose your color options etc.

^ The next gen Miata is suppose to be highly custamizable. The new Rx7 should be no different since it's Mazda's flagship.

Has anyone else had the thought cross their mind that there may be a few very unassuming RX-8s quietly running around with 16x's as test mules? Secretly making extra power and keeping it to themselves. All shifty and whatnot.

Everyone, please keep in mind those are artist renditions. Those use basically nothing official from Mazda other than hints from recent design cues and other concepts.

This is the RX-Evolv... basically the original RX-8 concept.

Some points are similar, but I would hardly call it a proper way to tell if you're going to like the RX-8's looks or not.

Probably not just yet, but you will need to be in Japan to find them over the next several years. Chances are, it will most likely be in a Mazda 6 or Mazda 3 body to test on, because no one looks twice at those cars in traffic.

I think what we've all learned is that they need to give all the cars a 100,000 mile engine/powertrain warranty right out of the box, so that potential buyers don't concern themselves with reliability at all, and just focus on the excellent performance.

Remember how relieved everyone was when they extended the S1 engine warranty to 100k? It was pretty meaningful, but being an after-the-fact change effectively wasted all the reassurance it would have provided.
