No, the noise doesn't matter about engine temperature. It happens on acceleration at low rev, in any gear. Only in gear though, I can't replicate it while revving it while parked.

If you could get a video, that would help.
Just, be careful when driving! Maybe do this in a parking lot...

winnipeg girl

Hi my names Alycia,

i live here in lil ol big Winnipeg lol specifically south end. i have had my 2004 rx8 for 3 weeks now and i am definitely loving it for the most part ha
I am always constantly worried about it though b/c from what i have read and heard there is so many little things you have to watch out for. I really want to take good care of her (Roxy, yes i named it lol).

Any tips you could give me??
i know that when you park it you are to wait a good minute to two minutes before shutting it off, i have forgotten twice to do that, was soo worried. Can someone explain why shutting it off will give it more chance of the engine flooding?

I also checked the oil and topped it off a week ago. Is changing the oil every 5000km good enough? I am using 5w20 non-synthetic.

So who else out there in Winnipeg has a rx8 and hows she been treating you??

hope to hear from anyone here in the city

Whoa! You named her Roxy?! That my 8's name... Though, once she goes through her upgrades and makeover, she'll be getting a new name. So, you're lucky!

Welcome to the thread, Alycia!

As for the tips- letting it run before shutting it off is not true. The thing you don't want to do is turn the engine off when it's cold (ie hasn't been brought up to operating temperature). Operating temps are usually reached after 10 min or so of normal driving.

Have a read through this thread (click). It will give you a ton of basic information to get you started with your new car

5000km's is about right for an oil change, if you just drive it normally. If you do a lot of racing, that's another issue (but a fun one!). And, as for oil weight, during summer, go with 5w30 or higher/ heavier. As the weather cools down, 5w20 is fine.

There have been a number of Winterpegers over the last few years, but we never really did have any meets. I was hoping to change that for this year, but I've been away most of the time, and I'll be moving in November.
But, I still plan on being active in this thread! I think that a meeting of sorts should take place within the next little while (before the white crap starts to fall ). My car is in storage already, but I'm down for a meet to show you new folks some of the little things to look after with the rx8.

Anyone else have any input? If so, shoot me a pm or post your ideas here! Happy rotar'ing!

I'm already stored for winter

But, I usually wait until mid-late Oct, depending on weather.

Late October unless the weatherman starts predicting snow earlier than that. Make sure to:

- Perform Oil Change (can't hurt right?)
- Top off fuel tank
- Add fuel stabilizer
- Completely fill tank with jerry can
- Remove Battery
- Store Battery in room temp. (not on a concrete floor!!!)
- May want to stuff exhaust with steel wool to keep mice out (although I never have and haven't ever had a problem)
- Stop and look at your baby every time you enter garge during winter and hope for an early spring

Haha good to see you're still around Jesse! Spamming the Winnipeg thread?
J/K glad to see you still have the spoolin 8! I was reading up on you a few weeks back. Did you ever get your issues sorted out?

I usually just park and remove the battery, then put that on a tender. Oil change for me is when I pull her out of storage.

Haha you know it Dean, if the Saskatoon thread had any activity I'd gladly be on it haha. Yeah turned out to be only a tuning issue because of my recently installed BHR Coils. Currently waiting on a new fuel pump (should be here tomorrow) then a couple more sessions with MM and she'll be running good as ever.

Sad to say but I'm thinking of potentially putting the ole banana up for sale in the spring but I could never do that unless it was running strong as can be so should be there in the next few weeks.

That's the second time today I've had to post that!!

Sad to hear, but understandable man. I nearly sold my 8 this year. I haven't driven it in over a year, and now I gotta put all my effort into my new (soon to be) house.
But, I'm now doing my best to turn my car back into the love I used to know. If you ever consider parting out the turbo, let me know. I have my mind on a different set up, but that doesn't mean it's written in stone! I still regret not getting to meet up with you when you were here and checking it out up close... :tears:

Hi guys,
Just noticed this thread has been revived and thought I should update you guys.. I unfortunately sold my rx8 just over a year ago as I was starting a construction job and needed a truck. This spring I did pick up a mazdaspeed3. Already thinking about selling it as its not the platform I want to build 400 hp on.

Rx8soldier: I saw your car at Boyd auto body in southdale. It was there for a while! Sorry to hear

Rotarymachinerx: love your car. Message me if you thinking about selling it. I might be looking in the spring to buy.

Sounds good Brennen, will do, I imagine I will throw a for sale thread up here and link it to this thread since winnipeg isnt tooooo far away haha.

Im still up in the air about selling it because I still love the car but when i look at it this way: The car will be 10 yrs old and only has 60000kms on it. This past year since I was away for work for a long time I put about 1200kms on the car. I just dont have the time to drive it like I used to anymore.

I'm probably putting the RX8 up for sale...Turns out I need a truck for work this winter

Just got it back from a running check-over at the dealer, everything is great. The whistle turned out to be the CAI lol...Just as I'd thought.

I'll be posting on Kijiji tomorrow probably. If anyone local is interested, feel free to PM me to come take a look and a drive.

Roxy :)

wow really, whats the odd of the few true rx 8's out there and we both name her Roxy lol too funny.
So me letting my car run for an extra 2 minutes once i park is not needed? Not too sure where i read that, but i was taking notes on the car b/c i knew she would be more nit picky than most cars to take care of. Great i will stop doing that. As for oil i'll just keep using the 5w20 since we have seen the weather oh so drop this week.........so sad

I see that many people park their rx over the winter, is that something that i should be thinking of doing and just do some good ol' bussing to work over the winter (nov-feb/mar)? When i bought the car the guy had just bought winter tires last November, so brand new, but if honestly its best to even put it in storage for at least the coldest months nov/dec-feb/mar then i'll seriously consider it and the idea of going back to bussing like in my uni days?

I'd definitely be down to meeting up in the next 2 or 3 weeks before it gets too cold. I am not knowledgeable in my car and would be nice to meet a few ppl who are who could show and tell me a few things about my roxy

@Brennan, sorry to hear you sold your car man! Any reason you went with a MS3? No amount of fwhp will ever equal a rear wheel car... Hopefully you find yourself a nice rx8. And if you do end up grabbing RotaryMachineRx's car, you'll be in control of a very nice ride!

@Jesse, I hope you don't sell, as you put a lot of effort into it. I understand where you're coming from (With army, accidents and repair shops, I've had a total of 650km's of driving my 8 in the last 2 years...). But, no matter how frustrated I get with the car, I'm always disappointed with the thought of what would replace it.
But, if you did sell, let's hope it goes into the hands of a deserving (and local, to me ) driver.

@Andrew, that's too bad you have to sell! I was looking forward to having a Phantom Blue buddy. No else understands the power you feel when driving the fastest and best handling colored rx8...

@Alycia, actually, Roxy is a fairly common name for a rotary powered car. An "R" and an "X" doesn't really leave much to the imagination lol. "Roxy" was actually my first rx7's name. I just kept it. But, the rx8 is a different platform all together, and I've felt kinda like I've betrayed the memory of my first car Hence, the name change she'll get once she's "completed" after the winter! So, you can keep the name, free of charge

There really isn't a need to park your car over winter. I only do because I don't like the idea of her getting rusty! But, there are many people who do drive it throughout the year. Just make sure you have a good set of winter tires! Rear wheel drive and low torque are great for the snow. But, if you've never driven rear wheel drive in the winter, it could be a bit terrifying for the first few weeks. Just have patience when you drive!!!

MEET?
Is anyone else down for a cruise and meet? My car is parked for winter, and I'm leaving from 28 Sept to 5 Oct, and I'm moving mid November, so anytime between then, I'd be down for a "rx8 tour day"! Sundays are usually a good time. What area of the city is everyone from? I'm St Vital/St Boniface. But, I'm fine with anywhere.

If you're interested, leave your preferred date and availability here, and we'll coordinate something!

Dean

wowww honestly, i did not even put that together, the whole RX in RoXy!!! it honestly was the first name that came to my head just like "bessie" my old 01' Malibu lol
Okie well i guess i shall give it a go, either way she has to stay outside b.c i live in an apt that has only outside parking. How long does everyone here usually let their car warm up in the morning?

If it gets below 10*, I usually let it warm for a minute or so. Anything below 0, well she should be stored by then lol. But, if it came to that, maybe 2-3 min at most. Just make sure you don't drive too hard (above 3000rmp) until the temp needle is about half way.

Have you read the new owners threads? Have a look through them to give you a better understanding of the "do's" and "don't's" of the rx8.

For outside storage, do you have any type of overhead cover? It's not mandatory, but it will help prolong the life of your paint and clear coat. If you can, try to give your car a good wash and wax, prior to the white **** falling... And, washing it more often in winter will also help (depending on snow fall, salt usage, etc).
If you ever have any questions, feel free to post here or shoot me a pm! Always happy to help a winterpegger

With a good set of winter tires and the low torque of the rx8 you arent gonna have any troubles in winter. As Soldier said it can be a bit daunting have RWD in the winter but after a few snowy days of driving you will get used to it.... and probably have alot of fun with it. To be honest, if i didnt have a readily available daily driver ('12 Tahoe) and I wasn't turbo'd, I wouldn't fret driving my 8 in the winter at all; I see plenty of people around here do it.

@rx8soldier I wanted a speed3 ever since one destroyed my rx8 in a race. I didnt want to join the subaru clan and I've always thought the 3s were decent looking. I did some research and found that its relatively easy to make good power with the speeds. So I found a good one in morden for sale. It's currently at 320fwhp and 350ftlbs.

I drove my rx8 for a winter. Was lowered 1.5 inches on springs but had some decent winter tires and rally armours for protection. First rwd car I've driven in the winter and I survived fine not even 1 curb bump! Just take your time. Make sure rinse the car off twice a week to prevent rust. Pay extra attention to the fenders, spoiler, badges, and rockers. That's where mine started bubbling. As far as letting the car warm up, I would wait until the gauge moved to 1/4 warm before driving it.

Yeah, speed3's are easy to make power with.
I'm always up for a challenge, which is why the 8 is for me I'll finally have a house with a good sized garage, so I'm looking to get some boost within the next while (I've been waiting long enough lol!). If you're down for a meet, bring the 3! I'd love to get a good look at it.

Good advice on cleaning. I just hope the winter is like last year: not much snow= not much salt on the roads!

Whether you drive an 8, or any other vehicle, be safe on your drive! No matter how good you think you are at driving, it's OTHER drivers you need to keep your eyes on! In the end, an accident is a 2(or more)-person dance...

i would definitely down to meet up , and sundays are usually good for me, i live on pembina near the university, so def close to st.vital. I really do want to learn more about my car especially bc it's so finicky in comparison to the standard vehicle, i honestly did not know what i was in for when i bought it, i didnt even know it took premium gas, it was an impulse buy and my mom needed her malibu in a week. I do love her though, shes a beauty, but i def have more random questions id love to ask and here other experiences with their baby.
I think i am leaning towards not using her in the winter, its just a real pain in the winter driving to work ..........main and higgins, 45-60 min and buses are in that way more convenient and i can even sleep if i wanted, anyone know a price range of how much insurance would be if not driven? just gas alone would cost more than bus pass insurance, so id def save a good 100-150 a month if i get rid of my parking spot at work too.

alycia
