As sad as this sounds, this is one of the most interesting reasons for me to get the AP.... I unfortunately spend alot of the time stuck in traffic, at drive-through windows and just generally not having a chance to 'beep' it much lately... I have a nice sounding Agency Power exhaust and am considering re-re-moving my cat again (with resonated midpipe this time) to see if I can't burn a little less gas at idle with an AP tune. It seems the factory map is extremely rich (probably all emissions related BS) and I also would also hope to have slightly better low end throttle response from a new AP tune too.????
I certainly don't expect to go from 16 MPG to 26 MPG or anything, but just out of principal, if this AP is available, why not do it, and then even get some high end performance too boot! (I know bass-ackward reasoning! )

Oh, and that brings up another thing that was bugging me... so 14.7 is perfect ideal Stoichiometry for gasoline, but with up to 10% ethanol in our gas here (especially in the winter), what are the ramifications when the PCM is expecting 100% gas, and what can the AP do to correct for it? (I believe Stoich for Ethanol is 9:1?). Probably getting in over my head here...

and one more rambling.... I use sCANalyzer like many of us with CarPc's... mostly just for the onscreen fun of monitoring temps and basic things... nothing serious... But, is there any reason to believe the AP will have a real-time OBDII interface that can be run on a PC with a USB connection? Or I am just flashing the PCM at putting the whole works in the drawer until the next tuning session?

 

Because I want it now damn it.

Cant remember reading in any of the AP threads about timing in your tune. NA specifically.

Did you change any of the timing?

I think I read someone (Brettus) state he made 5 hp by pulling a few degree's of timing.

Also, Im still trying to wrap my head around all the "tables" and how the tuning works, but after reading some of the Open source NA tune thread it sounded like only parts of the OEM tune are changed, and that high speed/load (5th/6th gear) are left alone.

How is this handled in your tunes? I believe you stated yours are "scaled", correct. So would this mean the entire RPM/load range is covered with yours?

 

I change/address everything.
All of the fuel tables (there are more than the three alluded to in the other thread), OMP, idle, fans, throttle response and all ignition timing.

In the N/A maps, I have subtle timing changes. In the most aggressive, there is a lot going on.
The FI maps have timing moved all over the place, depending on load and the relative detonation resistance of a particular RPM range.

 

My thinking as well. I tuned a motec from a dos prompt back in my college days for our SAE race team. The amount of time it takes to come up with something that will work is rather large and then you really need some pricey dyno time to prove it out. It can be done, but in the end whats the point?

Getting the AP from a knowledgeable tuner who throws his tunes in for free is a no-brainer...

To all the people on the fence about buying from MM: You're getting it for the same price as you would get it direct from Cobb, and he's throwing in a large number of maps for nothing. I complained about the $21 PayPal fee in the beginning, but he could have set the price $100 higher and I still would have bought it from him....I just would have complained longer.

I sincerely hope MM is getting these from Cobb at a huge discount because he does deserve the money for his time tuning and testing our little Wankels. And don't even get me started on support. He's very active on this board with 8300+ posts. You get the peace-of-mind that should you ever have a problem; he'll be at the keyboard trying to help within minutes. Don't know how _you_ do it...I personally need to sleep sometimes

I have no idea what he's making on the AP with his maps but my guess is that it ain't enough. With all my problems with tunes he has been in my garage to where he knows the location of all the tools, every time I needed him. I can't wait for his 4 port a/t AP with maps.

Jeff--I know you have a lot going on an congrats on that. When you have a few minutes can you speak about how the oem pcm will "learn" after it is flashed? Talking mainly about stft and ltft's here. Does the system continue to have the ability to do trims? I know the table targets are changed and it cant go above or below the values inserted---correct? Or is this a hard tune?
A cool feature would be the ability to take the VDI signal-- reset the activation a little and use it to trigger a water meth injection system. Say at around 6.8K rather than the 7.2K it has.

The PCM is your friend. The "learning" it does is NOT desigened to "un-tune" the engine. Its to arrive at the target values more accurately.
With a flash, we actually change the target values, so the trim will only make the tune more accurate.


We can already do that.
