what are your thoughts?
Cupping is from Alignment.

Damage on the inside is from a bad suspension set up or broken suspension.

Your tire rubbed the perch for the springs.

Your tire rubbed the perch for the springs.I would suggest you check this Loren, this is likely to have happened
These were all very good points Glen...Loren, I'm sure that one of these is most likely the cause. When you had described the tire to me, I had a different image in my head. but when I saw the pics, it seriously looks like something cut the tire. I'm thinking along the lines of Glen's suggestion that the tire may have hit the spring perch and that you may have a bad alignment and/or bad strut.

the car's suspension would feel off a bit. When the struts go, they seem to get bouncy.
You still on OEM struts?

I have a replacement set if you want. I've been meaning to throw them out since they're just sitting in my garage. Let me know if you want them.

Morning Gerry, how goes it? Any word on the employment situation? (last day?)
You going to take some time off and relax a bit or are you going to jump right into interviews / job hunting?

That is why Jessie asked if the strut was "oily" looking or if it looked shiney/greasy...all signs that the strut is leaking and bad. You most likely see a stong black mark, and it will be really dirty in one area if it has gone bad.

Jedi is right as well, the suspension will feel "off"....but since this is not your daily driver, it may be hard for you to diagnose....maybe asked Mirna if the car has felt any different lately...more bouncy, or if one side seems to be more responsiive or sluggish than the other.

The only other way of telling if the strut is blown, is pulling it off the car and comparing it to the strut on the opposite side of the car. With the strut tower assemble taken apart (pulling the spring off), you should be able to just push the strut on the ground to collapse it....if it is blown, you will have no problem collapsing it...and it may not even come back up (rebound)...or it may rebound too quickly.

Jump in here guys....

Jedi, he needs an assembly for the protege....this isn't for his 8.

well, my boss is flying to NY next week to meet w/ the head of Warner Bros' IT dept. and, from there he'll determine which "transition team" he'll need to get New Line moved over to Burbank. i'm hoping that i'll get a spot on that team, because at least then it will extend my employment here for a while. and, i'll still get my severance after that. it's unlikely WB will have jobs for us though- since Time Warner is cutting across the board, which means even those guys are at risk of having some cut-backs & lay-offs.

and, in the meantime, i'm just going to be passively looking and hoping that i find something suitable nearby. would start hating life if my commute became 2 hours each way.

Keith's got this one nailed on the head. I don't want to sound like an *** when I say this but I'm just going to spit it out: Mirna might not be able to tell if the car has felt a bit 'off'. My experience with most people is that they don't always pay attention to all the little things on a car and most cannot fell the difference with a blown strut; especially if it's in the rear.
I'm thinking the true test is going to be removing it and manually testing it

An Auto Show in the IE has only got to attract 3 different kinds of people. People who like old Camaros....people who like old Trans Ams.....and then those that need commuter cars (cause we all drive fricken 80 miles to get to work)...

oh, shoot...forgot those that like old mustangs......guess there is four groups that will show up. But of course, there has to be no cover charge/entry fee, and outside beverages and open containers must be allowed to be let in. Cause you know us IE people aint going to pay 4 bucks for one of them fancy beers in a plastic cup. We like our beers in cans or bottles...cause those are more fun to shoot at (who wants to shoot a plastic cup....really?....anyone?)

the T1R's are proving to be great tires, I now see why so many people use them on afterket wheels.
The Kumho's did have a more agressive tread pattern to them though.

Here's my recommendation from what I've seen so far.
If you're driving almost daily: Toyo. Better tread life
If you don't drive daily and want an agressive tire: Kumho MX is the way to go.

Love 'em both to be honest, I can easily see myself getting another set of Kumhos if I keep driving as much as I'm driving now.
However, if I go with new wheels I'll probably go with Toyo's simply because I don't want to be shelling out $1,000 in tires every year.

Gerry: for you, I'd go with the Kumho in 245, 40, 18. You'd LOVE them.
