One thing that sucks about this whole experience is that you go from a numbers matching 8 engine to a non matching engine if it is replaced. Bummer indeed from a preservation standpoint. I hope my 06 Shinka doesn't need it...

My mileage has always been quite a bit better thant what I hear from most. I had been getting around 20-22 highway depending how high I let the revs run. My last two tanks have been 19-21. Could be the re-flash, but then it could be that it's so much smoother and seems to have more mid range that I can't help by stab the gas a litte more.

Hello All,
Just had the recall done as well and had the plugs and PCM reprogrammed. There definetely is more mid range punch, but it seems to bog a bit in the lower rev's. My guess is they moved the powerband a bit higher ... which is ok by me. Won't know about MPG for a while but I assume it will be about the same as before.
Cheers,

I took my 8 in yesterday for rough Idle. The service manager came back to me 5 min later stating they heard a hissing sound from the engine. Which I never noticed but if I did I never knew it wasn't normal.
Today: Call back from the service manager after doing all road tests and tests on the CAT. All tests failed.... My car exhibited power loss which I never noticed because I very rarely drive wide open throttle which is required to feel it. My cat also failed tests for emissions and the such. They followed the flow chart mazda sent them to follow for the "if this problem exists go hear" thing and it led them to call mazda.
Which will probably result in a new engine after mazda sees the results my car posted being below spec. I won't get the official word until tomorrow.
I have owned my 8 for almost 2 years now and have 42,000 miles on it. I have always put 89 octane in the 8, changed the oil every 3,000 miles at the dealer and as far as I know it isn't synthetic... they use valvoline, I live in New England a non hot zone, I shift my 8 over 5,000 rpm all the time. Usually around 6-7,000 rpm. I have always let it warm up before driving as it states in the manual.
I have taken every precaution in the manual and maintence protocol in the manual with my 8. After taking all the care advice in the manual and following it my engine apparently **** the bed.
My only concern is... is replacing the engine the FIX for the problem. Or will the "new" engine have the corrections that caused the problem.
That is what I want to know. What causes this problem? Is there a solution for it?

Dropped off my 2004 Black MT (48,700 miles) at Bommarito Mazda, St. Peter's, Mo this morning. I was asked a bunch of questions regarding my car's performance and was sent off with a 2007 CX-7. 6 hours later I get the call:
* Motor passed inspection
* Cat passed inspection
* All spark plugs changed
* Flash performed
I had requested them to look at some other issues as well as change the oil and both air filters (engine / cabin). They had to order two engine mounts and they will not be in until tomorrow.
These guys have always been polite, provided quick turn-arounds, and have done great work for me. BTW, that CX-7 engine is nice!

I had the recall done as well. Mine is an 06 GT, told the manager if a vaccum test was going to be done and he said it was not needed. Just did an update on the flash changed my oil. Didn't change my plugs since they were changed a month ago.
Didn't bother asking abt the gas and wash since car was recently washed and gassed.
Car does feel different. Acceleration is a lil improved in the low rpm band.

Got my 04 GT back this morning. Leading plugs replaced, new flash and vacuum tested. (A, B & D). I took it in for a list of stuff:-
- 420F Recall
- Lower Ball Joint Recall
- Replaced front brake pads
- Replaced front seat back cover due to seat belt chips.
- Replaced 2 small clear plastic strip near the back door sill.
- Tightened a couple screws near the driver side vent for rattles.
Everything under warranty. Didn't get the gas nor car wash but they did a few minor things for me under warranty which are arguably should not be covered anymore, so didn't ask for the gas or car wash.
Did not feel any difference in driveablility.

when i started up my car....it sounded different like nice different i guess its cuz of the new starter and driving home seem'd like gas mileage went down
everything else was fine

Brought mine in for the recall end of last week.
-Replaced two plugs (not sure which)
-reflashed PCM
-cat checked and passed (anyone know what this check involves?)
-washed
-topped off gas
kept the car for a day to do that, gave me a 6 though.
Only difference is its starts much faster now and the throttle response is ... different, especially coming off idle.
Idle is still crap, especially with the AC on. If you have been on the freeway for a while and come to a stop, it will drop to 500 or below before it catches itself
Going back to dealer tomorrow. Dealer is Bell Auto Mall. Wish Avondale was closer =(

follow up on my last post.
Brought it back the dealer this morning and it was idleing better than normal, so I thought great here we go again.
The service rep sat in my car for a minute, reved it a little then gets out and says "well I'm not happy with it, were going to give you a CX-7"
He said I should get used to it since they are probably going to replace the engine.
I told him I thought it was probably just a clogged cat or dirty injectors, but he goes Mazda says if comes back a second time, then it gets a new engine, we've already done 5 of these.
A liitle overkill if you ask me, I wonder how much the dealer gets from Mazda, surely more that in costs them.
I just hope they get it all hooked up right the first time.

Dropped my car off this morning, got a loaner car. Got a call an hour later. They had to give me new ignition coils because the old ones were corroded. Maybe from when I had the car in Hawaii (salt in the air)?? Got a call around 1300 telling me my car was ready. They washed it and filled it up. Can't tell a difference other than it takes a second longer to start.

I had the recall performed a couple pf weeks ago, but now I've noticed a loss of power especially in the low rpm range. I took it back they other day and they said that the ignition coils were bad. Now they have 4 other people complaining about the same thing. Apparently, it becomes a lot more noticeable after the reflash.
The coils are on back order so when they come in and are installed, I'll keep you posted.

Good and Bad
I had the recall done several weeks ago. They just did the plugs and flash,no problems. I posted this info already.
I was one of the people getting around 14mpg with my car. I got 17.2 on my first tank since the recall. That's the good news.
I have also noticed from time to time the car doesn't want to start right up. Sometimes I will have to crank for quite a while or crank a second time to get it to start. Anyone else have this issue?

Brought mine in on tuesday. They replaced the starter, plugs and battery (have that wonderful turbine whoosh). Since I didn't complain of power loss, flooding etc, all they did was inspect the CAT to determine that my engine was fine. No other tests.
Also, when I brought up the gas one of the SAs was awestruck and said he'd never heard of that. Asked another SA and he said the same. Then the guy went to the manager (with the printed letter) to discuss and no one had a clue about it. So he said if i was willing to wait 45 minutes (yes 45) he would send a runner to the gas station they have on account to fill it up. Since I was in a hurry, I refused....I can't justify waiting 45 minutes for $20 in gas.
