Voluntary Emission Recall 4206F: Completed - Feedback

Since this is a hot topic, I think we need a thread for owners who have actually completed the recall work to post comments & feedback.

For the sanity of this thread, PLEASE LIMIT POSTS TO STRICTLY "FEEDBACK ON THE RECALL- AFTER THE WORK HAS BEEN DONE ON YOUR RX-8."

** PLEASE DON'T POST QUESTIONS HERE - ONLY FEEDBACK **

If you had your recall performed, please let us know what exactly was peformed:

* Engine replaced?
* Cat replaced?
* Engine & cat replaced?
* No major parts replaced (flash & sparkplugs)?
* Other info you wish to share...

And, on that note, LET THE FUN BEGIN... :)

I had my '06 (Feb build) in for the emission recall yesterday at Senator Mazda in Sac. The entire test took about an hour and a half of which 20 minutes was spent on a road test with a scanner hooked up to the car.

I was told that if the car did not pass the vacume test that I would receive a "new" engine. I had zero problems with this car so I was confident that I would pass which I did.

The only issue that my service advisor brought up after the test was that I needed the upgraded spark plugs which were not in stock so I have to go back.

My invoice did not indicate if I received the latest flash for the OMP so I'll have to ask them when I return for the plugs. I did receive the extended powertrain warranty.

What upgrade spark plugs is it, is it part of the recall ?
If you have the technical part no of the plugs please send so that we can also check / verify.
Did they say it will make any differance.
We never got a recall in SA, I want to double check,

thanks

Philip

I was thinking about making a thread like this, only it would be nice to have it be a poll. There are a limited number of permutations to where I think the poll tally would be convenient. That way nobody has to keep running through the thread tabulating results.

Not sure if you can edit the thread to be a poll, or have to start over?

i.e.

"IF you've had the recall performed, what components (if any) were replaced?

1 - sparkplugs only
2 - sparkplugs + cat
3 - sparkplugs + engine
4 - sparkplugs + cat + engine
5 - cat only
6 - cat + engine
7 - engine only
8 - Just the flash, Ma'am

Took in '05 GT 6 speed for recall service 09/05/06 to Mundy Mazda in Houston, TX.
Passed road and vaccuum test so no new engine. Happy about that because it has been trouble free since purchase.
They did the new flash and changed two sparkplugs. Also did their usual circle inspection.
Was given a new (6 miles on odometer) 2007 CX-7 Touring model to drive while car was in for recall. Told to drive it all I wanted and not to replace any gas used before bringing it back. They had my RX-8 for 5 hours because of several other cars in for recall and it was raining that day so the road test were backing up.
Picked up RX-8 and they had filled up the gas and washed car.
Excellent service department and a very good experience as usual.
Only difference I noticed in the RX-8 was that it didn't want to stall out when comming to a stop light in 6th gear like it used to. Engine running real smooth.

Tirminyl 09-07-2006 10:50 AM

^ That was also noted by someone else with the updated flash.

Philip_SA 09-07-2006 02:43 PM

Thanks tirminyl, I sent it to our dealer to see if they know about something like that by us in South Africa

Thanks

Philip

Took my '05 6 speed in last for the recall and 15K mile service. Everything passed, no new motor for me.

Just plugs and a reflash. Got a Ford Taurus to cruise for a day. A little miffed that I didn't get the car back washed and full of gas. When I brought this up to my service advisor he said that they only do that if you get a new engine. But when I read the recall letters it didn't seem like that.

X2 on the poll, I too wanted to make one. Percentages would be really nice. Although it looks like 100% with no new engine so far.

Your dealer is pulling a fast one on you. They get money for washing and gas either way. He just told you that so he could keep the $60 Mazda gives him to fill up your car, and the $20 Mazda gives him to wash it. That's your money.

new2me 09-07-2006 03:35 PM

took mine in and needed new cat. got the car wash and fill up. also got a cx-7 for the weekend since they were closed for labor day...i put almost 400 miles on a brand new one...lol

They should have not done the road test and vacum test since you were problem free when you got there.!!!!!!! Dealership did not follow procedure!!! :nono:

I dropped my car off at University Mazda (Seattle) at noon and they called a couple of hours later to let me know my car is ready. They said they did the flash, plugs, filled the tank, and washed it. I should have paid more attention to the letter so I would have known to bring it in empty. They probably only had to put in 2 gallons. Doh! Anyway, glad all I needed was the plugs and flash. Good service from University Mazda, as usual.

jeffe19007 09-07-2006 05:50 PM

I went in for the recall Wednesday, 9/6. Seemed to take about three hours judging from when I dropped it off to when the paperwork was finalized.

Flash was all that changed. No new plugs! They said they inspected them and they were fine.

Power seems better over 3800 to about 6000. I know a fresh flash is supposed to make the engine 'friskier', but it doesn't seem to be true this time around.

Engine must be doing fine after 15,000 miles of the desert heat (yeah, it's a 6 speed GT - 07/04 build). But I don't cruise at a set RPM very long even when on the road. Not a big fan of the cruise control.

The last 6,000 miles, and two oil changes have been Amsoil 5w20. So maybe that's the secret. Talk about wasting money!

I had mine in for the 30k service N/C. I told them of the pinging when its hot and they said "A-PEX SEAL NOISE.NORMAL NOISE". They had it all day. Got wash,gas,CX-7 GT-AWD, and motor mounts on order, they put in trailing plugs for the 30k service and it is running great. Glad to have the 60k warranty.

TopTrainer 09-07-2006 09:32 PM

not officially completed, but dropped the car off this morning and got a call around 5 pm. The service writer asked me if I had the maintainance records on the car because several engine and CPU related "repairs" have come up through Mazda but they don't have the specifics of what was done. I explained that I just purchased the car used in May and have had the CPU reflashed twice since then, but he said several engine related service visits have come up. He told me he will try to track down the dealership who did the repairs and would then hopefully have a better direction of how they should proceed tomorrow.

So I'm guessing this means my car did not pass the test or else he would have just told me to come pick up the car right? :(

dimplezero 09-07-2006 11:51 PM

I went to dealer, and I'll get new engine (may be not new) next Wednesday.
I asked about washing and fueling, but he said they will just wash it, and
not fuel it. Does it make sense?
I heard Mazda will pay dealers for fueling cost.

Zoom49 09-08-2006 01:31 AM

Took mine in for recall and service on Wednesday AM. Updated flash and checked cat, found cat ok. Performed test drive check and engine passed. They did not change plugs as they had been replaced in March about 6,000 miles earlier. I have 38,000 miles on mine now.
They also replaced failed motor mount and missing gromet on engine cover that I noted was missing. Car idles smoother (most likely motor mount) and seems to have smoother acceleration from 3 - 6K rpm range. Service included oil and filter as well as air filter.
Enterprise rental was PT Cruiser and no free gas  Took two days for flash and oil change :spank:

peterisurhero 09-08-2006 02:06 AM

i know im not supposed to post any questions whatsoever but i tried searching ALL the recall threads adn i still can't find the answer.

Will they still do the recall to my car if i have aftermarket parts?? Midpipe and a catback. CEL light showing.

LiL BenNy 09-08-2006 05:43 AM

same... cuz i have a high flow cat intake and exhaust + tons of aftermarket electronics..... would this play any effect in the recall?

Tirminyl 09-08-2006 06:30 AM

Obviously, you two did not search very well- https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...postcount=1417
