My recall was done by Gunther Mazda in Ft Lauderdale.
2004 6SP, 27K miles.

-- Replaced the Cat.
-- ECU update.
-- No free gas...
-- Rental Chrysler Crossfire convertible - fast but handles like shi*.

Car seems to run smoother but the difference is minor.

I always get a great service at this dealership.

got the recall done tuesday, with 46496 miles on the car. I told them I had experienced no problems, and had replaced the spark plugs myself in april (5 months ago), so I shouldn't need new plugs or engine. when I called on monday to make the appointment, I asked about getting a fuel tank fill-up, he didn't know about it. when I brought it in on tuesday, he said he read the letter after speaking with me on the phone, and they would wash it and fill it up.

I didn't bother getting a loaner car.

they called me back 4 hours later. when I picked it up, they had washed it, filled it up with gas, and put about 3 miles on it.

when they printed out the paperwork, it said they had replaced 2 spark plugs. so I asked for my old ones back, thinking I would just put them back in when the new ones were due to be replaced.

the service guy came back out and handed me 2 new spark plugs, still in the box.

he said 'the computer told us to replace them, and we have to send the old ones back to mazda'. not sure if he meant the computer in my car, or their computer, or the recall instructions, or what. but with 2 new ones in hand, I felt it best to let the conversation end there.

drove home, seemed to run fine. heavy traffic, so I didn't get to redline it. on the highway, I was able to floor it once in 6th gear, it felt more responsive.

the next day (today, wednesday), I was able to try it out. from a standing start, full throttle, getting to redline in 1st and 2nd seemed about the same as before. but I noticed that any time I was cruising in a steady gear and then floored it, it seemed more powerful. I think it gained some torque in the mid range from 3000-6000 rpms. I had been redlining it and driving hard in general the whole time between first reading about this recall and up until the time I got the recall performed to make sure I had enough oil on the seals.

also, they didn't disconnect my battery or anything like that, clock was still set, as well as all my radio stations too.

Help

I need some help understanding this recall. I there an "official" letter that comes from Mazda tell me that there's a recall? I called a local dealer yesterday and the service rep said that they were told to wait until the customer had the "letter". I've yet to receive one. I did get the warranty extention notice.

Yes, there is an official notice, and many of us in the southern (hot) states got the warranty letter the same day as the recall letter... It all depends where you live on how the recall letters will be distributed....hang in there... hotter, more problematic states were served first.
Although, most dealers from what I've heard are doing them without requiring the letter... mine didn't even want to see my letter even though I offered it up.

You DO NOT need the letter and your dealer is wrong for telling you that. If you dont want to argue with your dealer then print the following courtesy of Zoom44- https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...60&postcount=7

Right. Even though recieved a letter I never showed it to my dealer, and they took care of the recall work without any questions.

I had it done today. No new engine.

I didn't get a loaner because I didn't need it. They flashed my ECU, gave me new spark plugs, washed the car and filled my tank. I don't notice any difference in how the car drives.

I had the service done at Lancaster Mazda in Lancaster, CA.

I just had my Emissions Recall done at Browning Mazda in Cerritos, CA. The Service Department was very good!

• No new engine, Catalytic Converter is OK
• Reflashed PCM
• New Spark Plugs
• Free rental (POS Monte Carlo really made me appreciate my 8!)
• Offered free car wash, but I had to get back to work.
• No free gas

I didn’t notice any significant change in performance. However, when the engine is warm, it now takes longer to start. Has anyone else noticed this problem?

Did you ask why no free gas? That's where I'm thinking of taking mine.

I didn't check the gas until I was driving away. If I wasn't late getting back to work, I might have asked.

recall results

I took my 2004 with 13,500 miles into Diablo Mazda in Concord, CA on Weds morning 9/13/06.

I also wanted them to check the brakes because the rotors seem to be warped.

Weds afternoon I called to see if the car was done. I was told it should be done by 5 pm. I live an hour from Concord and I was in Concord when I called so the Service writer told me to just keep the rental and pick it up in the morning to avoid getting caught in the commute traffic. I go back to get my car Thursday morning, drop off the rental car with Enterprise (mini van) and get a ride to the dealer. When I get to the dealer I find out that my car is not done. It takes an hour to get another rental car and another hour to go back home. I get a call Thursday late afternoon to tell me the car is done and that they didn't find anything wrong with the brakes and weren't going to charge me for the inspection. I decided to wait until today (Friday morning) to pick up the car. I drop off the car at the rental agency and get a ride to the dealer. The cashier doesn't have any paper work on my car. I wait around for 15 minutes while they get the paper work done. I get in my car, the outside is washed (not very well, wheels not clean), inside not cleaned at all. (How much did Mazda pay to wash the car? White glove treatment, I don't think so.)

They flashed the prom, changed the leading plugs, CAT is O.K, full tank of gas. . Brakes still pulsate. Thats all.

My dealer also told me that they will not perform the recall until I show them the recall with my name on it! I had stopped in there earlier to get my past service records of engine stalling and power loss issues... brought up that it sounds like I needed a new engine. They brushed it off and now wont do the recall, lol!

See this thread... https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discussion-3/2406-recall-question-concern-98856/

Took my car in last week not knowing about the recall because it requires a lot more gas to keep it from gagging when you first start out and it has a pulsing sound to it like a boxer engine until the secondary FI kicks in at 3750.

new spark plugs, flash, car wash and tank of gas.

No change in the crappy way the car runs so I have to take it back again.

Call Mazda North America and politely explain the situation and ask about having the recall done. Explain what your dealer told you. I suspect they'll get it straightened out for you in no time. (or they may tell you to wait a few days or so?)

Their phone number is in the owners manual.

After living with the new flash for two weeks I have observed much inproved starting in the morning. I did not get the new plugs as they were installed at my last service 6k miles before. I had the starter and battery upgrade for almost a year. It now seems to start after one rotation of the engine rather than 3 before the flash (1 1/2 seconds). They must have leaned out the fuel further on startup.

Oh yeah, been a week since new engine...
A> the squeek heard from the engine is in relation to the clutch somehow. Push clutch in at idle - squeek stops; let clutch out at idle, squeek comes back. Squeek also noticed recently while in second coasting. Stupid squeek.

B> Rough idle still there.. It seems like the engine tries to compensate more, bringing up the idle instead of down when the A/C is turned on. HOWEVER, i'm starting to think its maybe the natural oscillation of something in the cabin. Gonna get my wife to sit in the drivers see and take it from idle to about 1,000 over and over again while i crawl around the passenger side to compare...

Thats the sound from the throwout bearing, its going bad(or already bad)

For ANY kind of transmission work, they should change the throwout bearing, not like its expensive or anything .

Recall done Friday.

No new engine.

Low-end power is reduced and engine does not turn over as easily.

Going back to shop.

Sparkplugs + Flash
CX-7 loaner: daily mileage limit and full gas tank return policy waived
Car Wash (crap) and Gas filled up.

My only haggle was that they wanted to limit me to 100 miles per day on the CX-7 and return it with a full tank of gas. I explained i heard of instances of those policies being waived because it is a recall. They gladly agreed to waive the polcies. (I mean, one day with a new CX-7 and they're gonna limit me to 100 miles? and pay for gas? No way jose) Drove it 120 mi and 2/3 gas left.

It stung a little that an SUV/crossover gets WAYYYY better gas mileage than my car.

Car seems the same. I was getting the best mpg outta my 8 the past 2-3 months, 19.4 mpg. Hopefully the gas mileage doesn't get worse again.
