Umm... so how many people have actually had GOOD experiences with rebuilds? I want to get a compression test done before the warranty runs out but if it's this much of a crapshoot to get a working new engine I think I might just wait it out and potentially do the rebuild myself down the line.

Also, for people who have gotten failed remans, is it pretty clear from the getgo that something is wrong (as in, the cons didn't put the damn thing together correctly), or do faliures sometimes take a little longer to manifest themselves? The reason I ask is that I have about 1k of warranty left and I wouldn't want to end up with a dead engine once the warranty runs out. My current engine runs fine as far as I can tell (althought premix had a significant effect on mpg)... Even if it tests low compression, I might just say "the devil you know"...

 

I wonder if RX-8 owners can be divided into two groups: those that HAD an engine change and those that WILL have an engine change. But seriously, I think cold weather people might be okay. But if you move to a hotter area you might reveal hidden damage. And what if you sell to a hot weather buyer. For me the magic number is 80 degrees where I felt a slight power loss. Severe power loss began at about 90 and unable to maintain 70mph. At 100 the car won't start.

When I'm near the end of the warrentee I will have a vacuum or compression check done even if I have to pay for it. I suggest others near warrantee expiration time do the same, and all others should have a vacuum test annually.

 

Well I never really experience power loss... I am just concerned about undetectable wear... I guess I will get the compression check done and go from there....

Mazda spies, please pass this up the food chain: HIRE REAL MECHANICS TO DO YOUR REMANS! Hell, give me the parts and space in your shop and I will do it myself! Or step up to the plate and give us new engines...

BTW, if you get a rebuilt engine, what does that do to your warranty status? I realize you're not going to get another 5y/60k period, but how long can you expect them to cover issues with the new engine after the warranty period runs out (without legal intervention)?

 

The warranty period on the Re-Man is the remainder of your original warranty, 5 year/60,000 miles or 12 mo./12,000 miles which ever is greater.
This is my understanding of the warranty.

 

That means that if I get a new engine every 11 months I will be always be covered!! Yay!!

 

I know of three RX-8's that had their engines replaced around here (including mine) and all run great! I think it's safe to say they all get driven pretty hard, too.

 

Mine's been great since I had the new engine in. Runs like a champ now!

BTW, how does one tell if an engine is a reman? I seem to remember reading something about painted bolts? Any way to tell while the engine is in the car?

So are they still using remans, or are we now getting "new" blocks. Can anyone confrim this? I may be getting a "new" (questionable) engine soon and do not want a reman'd unit. I ask because it seems to go back and fourth in the thread.

 

Interesting story, some local FD guys were in touch with a friend that worked at a mazda dealer. He tells the FD guys that there is a NEW FD block sitting in the parts department that they've had for a few years and are willing to sell pretty cheap (2 grand). They think it is a reman and he swears up and down that it is new, not reman.

The guys ask my opinion and of course I say, it is likely a reman and not a new one.

They go and look at the "new" engine, pop the lid on the crate, and there before them is a shiny blue "reman" tag on the front cover.

There's no need for name calling, but I don't think alot of people on this forum can "afford" to keep replacing the engine over and over...
