maniac, im not saying it NEVER happens. they just seem to hold out alot longer than other makers do.

GM for instance will usually buy back before they will go to court, mazda seems to like to fight it out.

I still think you will have less trouble to buy back than fight in court.

I'm pretty sure my trany is shot- it was grinding 90% of the time going into 2nd and about 33% of the time going into 3rd, reguardless of RPM.
So what were your numbers, and what did they do about the tranny? I just read through this whole thread and may have missed a results post even though I was looking for it.

My service manager said the same thing to me when I inquired about compression testing. The manual says that if the pressure is below 98.5 psi, the engine must be replaced or some remedial action has to be taken. The powertrain warranty is supposed to be for five years, so does that mean you can request a compression test any time before that (with payment), and get some warranty action if it fails?

Well I look over to the temp gauge and it's over the half way mark, and climbing.
It proceeded to go to about a mark above the edge of the horizontal line on the temp ICON in the gauge. I opened the hood when I got home and saw coolant all over my engine covers.
Will this ever end! So back to the dealer I go today.
So this is just a wild guess(and I'm not sure if it's already been done but I don't feel like reading back through 11 pages) BUT have they done a pressure test on the coolant bottle and the cap? It seems fishy that the guage was only reading a little over half way and the coolant boiled over. If the cap is not holding the correct pressure in the coolant system or fails interemittently, the coolant will boil at a lower temp and cause your overheating problems. Also the bottle is under pressure in this cooling system and there could be a small pinhole leak in it that expands open when it gets hot, causing pressure loss. All I know for sure is that if I were you right now I would just about

I think you must have a reman with a small coolant seal leak at this point. Has a leak down test been done on the block's coolant passages? Has the coolant been tested for exhaust hydrocarbons?

The coolant bottle and cap are new. Little over 1000 miles on them. They were actually changed just before the first engine. The gauge starts moving at 230 degrees Fahrenheit.
I was talking with Mazdamaniac last night and we discussing the pressure rating on the cap. He has gone to a higher PSI than the factory cap is. He hasn't noticed any difference in the cooling system temps with the new cap.
He did install some anti freeze to his prior Water and Water Wetter mixture for coolant. He said he noticed lower temp readings and more stable temp readings during driving. I'll let him give you the facts.

This is NOT a REMAN Engine. This is a NEW engine from MAZDA JAPAN.
Mazda has stated this.
No one has done a leak down test on this engine to my knowledge.

Monday Mazda is sending some of there Engineers over to look at the car and run some tests.

Drastic measures for drastic times...

So why is it that you have apparently gotten the only "new" renesis replacement engine in the US, meanwhile everyone else continues to get remans? Even the other guy on here that was told he was getting a new engine, got a reman. I know you are sure, but I am not, especially given the issues you are having.

Yes it's in "Lemon Law" territory.

Thats all I can say.
you are well beyond the lemon law, get it replaced, this is ridiculous. I can't believe you've even been this patient.

I was having issues with the two remans that failed. Mazda was informed and said they have a new engine in the states, and that I would receive it.
It was the only new 4 port in the states at the time. I just happen to be the lucky one to get it.
Mazda was trying to make things right with my situation, and get me an engine as soon as possible. And they did.
Yes the car is still having some issues. But Mazda is doing everything to try and rectify the situation. And I thank them.
I personally (and many others) would like to know what is causing this issue. So I shall let Mazda continue with there efforts to solve this mystery.
I for one want to know.
And if all this solves an issue for all the future Rotary Mazda owners and Mazda, then I am happy to help.
Lets see what happens with the car on Monday.

Let me just say that Mazda has apologized to me in a big way, and I have accepted there apology.

It is definitely a new motor. It even has features that are only found on the late '07 models (shielded ESS, different coil bracket, etc). Not to mention the casting serial number.

BTW - a leak-down test is only of minor use on a rotary motor. The sealing mechanism is not really designed to work in a static position.

I like those kinds of apologies!

Uh...I know that the COMPRESSION leak down test is useless.

I mean a COOLING SYSTEM pressure leakdown test. Most rebuilders pressurize the coolant passages of engines to check them for issues, using a checkvalve and a pressure gauge.

Gotcha. Sorry. I kinda ducked into the middle here.
Actually, yes. His cooling system was given a leak-down test - I just can't remember if it was this motor or not.

New Car and Break In

Ok, so 597 miles in a week, is it time to start hitting over 6000? 7000? 8000?
First true tank of Shell Premium, even 20mpg.
I must be driving it too gentle.

"New engine lasts 3 days"

I may have you beat. My engine lasted less than one day. My newly installed 2nd engine sounded a bit rough out of the lot. That evening I drove around the neighborhood under 4000 rpm to break in, and the engine died three times. At the dealer the next day, the service writer gave me a hard time, saying I had a new engine that was test driven and approved by a mechanic. They made me wait an hour until the mechanic returned from lunch. On our test ride around the block the engine quit four times, maxed out at 6,000 rpm, and made a chattering noise. The mechanic will call me tomorrow if I need a new engine.
