I just filled up on this oil: http://www.ky-promotor.com/product/oil.html.
Its an oil between Katayama and SpeedMaster specifically for rotaries. Got the 5W-35 stuff for the 8. Smooth as silk on the drive home. Gotta love new oil :-)

Why is it that some owners believe they know more about what oils
should be used in Rotaries and that includes RENISIS than the
Mazda (Japan) factory who have been developing the rotary for
over 40 years.
Mazda Japan and Australia still to this day do not recommend
the use of synthetic oils in their rotaries, 8 included.
And yes we sell ALL synthetic oils here too.
The main structural design of the RENISIS is basically the
same as the13B used in the RX-7, the RENISIS
exhaust is ported via the intermediate housings rather than
the rotor housings, and no turbo.
There are minor modifications to the apex, corner seals, but
the fundamental design remains the same.
The rotary is designed to burn oil to lubricate apex seals,
corner seals, rotor side seals, and this is done by the
metering oil pump. The ability of synthetic oil to burn in
the rotaries combustion process without leaving unwanted
residue build up is another concern.
There is also a Mazda factory(Japan) bulletin to parts
departments concerning the effects on the
oil control ring "O" rings which are made of a synthetic
type compound, these O rings dissolve over time
when used in an engine that has synthetic oil.
Although the part number of the O ring in the 8 is different.
Mazda Japan has yet to approve the use of synthetics in
the RX-8, and until they do I would not use any brand.
I don't care what Bob the oil man, or racing this or that says,
I will go by what the manufacturer says.
I wonder if synthetic gas (petroleum) was available would you
use it over mineral gas even if it was not recommended.
Don't get me wrong, I am not against the use of synthetic oils
in conventional combustion engines, I am at this stage
against the use in all Rotaries.
And yes, some racing teams use synthetics in their racing
rotaries, but they rebuild them very regularly.

If synthetic is so bloody bad for the renesis, why does Mazda sell synthetic oil expressly for it?

I think mazda didnt just want people to use any kind of sythetic oil since there are so many brands and many different quality and different characteristics, and that the average joe or jane dont know anything about oils.
so they probrably didn't want to take any chance of someone putting some "discount" synthetic oil (you never know) which corrodes the gas seals, (although most brands have an anti corrosive additive), then you have a lawsuit.
so mineral oils were a safe bet.
At least we now know that synthetics aren't really a taboo for the renesis, but we may never know for sure that it is 100% safe since there is no official data, except that of the synth-renesis, Mazda guarantees engine performance and longitivity because it was designed specifically for the renny.

Quote - SHINSERENESHISU is, RENESIS only genuine Mazda oil. ベースオイルはPAO※を主成分としてエステルを配合した100%化学合成油であり、RENESISに適し た性状のものを採用しています。 PAO ※ is comprised primarily of oil-based compound as a mix of oil and 100% chemical synthesis, RENESIS suitable properties to use.
粘度はスポーツカーのエンジンに求められる走行性能に適した0W-30に設定しています。 Viscosity is required to drive sports car's engine suitable for performance set to 0 W-30.
※PAO:Polyalpha-Olefin(ポリアルファオレフィン)の頭文字をとった化学合成物質 ※ PAO: Polyalpha-Olefin (polyalphaolefin) Acronym for synthetic chemical substances
0w30 weight, 100% Poly Alpha Olefin synthetic - exactly like I run in mine!
Coincidence?
I think not.

Hopefully this thread is still running and alive.
Thank you for all the information.
Now that I'm convinced and WILLING on trying Royal Purple synch oil I have still have a doubt :
RotaryGod, in your first post, you mentionned (quoted a magazine I believe) that for those who used regular oil for many years could get a downside (simply put) when shiftin to Sync. Oil.
Could you tell me more about this?
I own a 2004 RX-8 and I believe that the previous owner used 5W-20 regular oil and so do I.
I need to change oil next month and I would like to try the RP. Is it risky? I guess you strongly recommand?
Thanks again !

Oh, other question : where to find RP tranny and engine oil in CANADA (Quebec) ? Or have it shipped from an online website?
I seem to only find Redline oil online...
(I tried the Redline for my tranny and I can't say that Im very impressed)

I don't think you will get a response from RG anymore. He was slammed for some **** that went down and has left us I believe.
I wish he were back on the boards, he is and will always be a great guy to me.
Search the transmission articles and you will find that Royal Purple is causing some tranny issues after awhile.
Search online for RP and who will ship to Canada.

Wow, that's a shame. Fred will be greatly missed. I learned a lot from him.

Seriously guys. I didn't even realize rotarygod left.
He was one of the most important members of this community, and somehow we have managed to **** him off enough to leave.
What the **** guys. It's time we show no tolerance for the kind of crybaby acts that pissed him away. Take a step back, and think about what you're about to say.
Especially when it involves highly experienced members of this community.
