1/2 oz. oil/1 gal fuel (256:1) is considered the standard for a rotary engine with functioning MOP

Amsoil Sauber Professional Smokeless Formula here; semi-synthetic

It was easy to get locally. Occasionally I can smell it on an initial cold startup, but outside that you'd never know that it was in there. Just changed the plugs the other night; perfect tan color. Same for inside the exhaust system, no soot, etc.

I use ProtecR from Pettit Racing. It's more of a fuel lubricant than 2-stroke oil. But I have noticed a significant increase in power and fuel economy versus standard pre-mix oil.

I've been adding 4oz Amsoil Saber (synthetic) and 3 oz Lucas UCL to every 10 gallons of 91 octane Chevron for about a year now. The engine began running noticably smoother when I began premixing, and I am now getting more than 20 miles per gallon of mixed city/highway driving. I drive on the sane side of spirited, always shifting at 4000-5000 rpm. I am certainly not an expert on the rotary engine, but I am delighted with the way my 8 runs and feel good about paying a little extra attention to my car. My logic tells me that the premix is improving lubrication in the engine as well as helping provide a better seal.

Thanks to all the input, this thread will give newbies (or novice) a better idea on how to premix.

Keep them coming !

*Still trying to finish the Pennzoil so I can use Castrol, then Idemitsu, Doing about 5 oz of premix now*

I'm running a tank with 6oz of Yamalube R-2 semi-synthetic racing premix...

seems to have gotten rid of my cold start ticking noise, smoothened out my idle a bit, and after talking with the Yamaha mechanic it does a great job of cleaning engines up and keeping them clean... oh, and Paul at Mazdamart i believe recommends the stuff as well

... pricey though at $10 a quart... but its yamaha racing blue in color so it at least looks cool

O boy yesterday for the first time I user Castrol Synthetic 2 stroke oil. It costed me $5 for a quart. There was the regular one as well for a lil cheaper bt I thought I'd try the synthetic one. And boy does it make a difference, I put in 5oz and within the first 50 miles I could feel the difference not to mention my gas mileage increase significantly. I will report after I finish this tank.

One concern I had is, how do you know if the oil is Castor based since I was told this is bad for the engine?
Also in the long term would this have a bad effect on the engine..Cat etc?

I'm looking into premixing as well. A lot of rotar-heads recommended:

Anyone have experience with it?

As far as I read in a lot of the premix discussions, no you don't have to.

From what I understood (and please correct me if I'm wrong), the only problem with a Castor based oil is clogging your cat. So, no cat...no problem?

To be honest, I have never heard of premixing since I joined in November of 2003, till now. I think with the latest recall for lack of oil injection, this is more necessary than ever before to help with the apex seals?

I've been thinking about trying this but i've heard mixed opinions on what to use. Anyone have any suggestions on what to use?

I've been using Yamalube 2-R for a couple months now. Haven't had the recall performed yet, so this seems like good protection until then.

Another thing that I'm wondering. I just had the recall performed and everything checked out fine and i'm wondering if it's still ok to premix.

from what I understand premixing only adds to the oil already injected in the rotary housing. So I don't see how it can hurt since oil doesn't create carbon build up. This also leads me to believe that owners who have had the recall done, comment on the engine performing better accompanied by an increase in gas mileage, which is the exact same thing that I am noticing with premixing.

Recall done, still using premix (4 oz. Valvoline TCW3 2-stroke oil per tank) and it runs very well and smooth.

The problem with using castor based oils (natural castor bean oil) in two strokes, which are very similiar to rotaries when you think about it, is that the oil leaves a lot of crap in the combustion chamber. Ask an old two stroke guy about tearing motors down because the top end/pistons were all gummed up. That's why 99% of two stroke motorcycle guys will use a synthetic oil (premix or injection) or at the very least a modern oil (which is not castor bean based).

Disclaimer: Never tried premix in a rotary, interesting idea. All my experience is based with injecting and/or premixing two stroke motorcycyles.
