Is it safe to say that all TWC-3 oils are not castor based even if it is NON-SYn?

I like Pennzoil and use it as my regular oil. I'm interested in this premixing stuff, so I checked out 2 cycle oils at my local gas station.

I saw Pennzoil "Outdoor multi-purpose 2-cycle" oil and not the Pennzoil marine synthetic 2- cycle. The Pennzoil outdoor multipurpose is certified TC-W3. like the Pennzoil marine synthetic 2 cycle.

For you premixing experts out there. Would using the Pennzoil "Outdoor multi-purpose 2 cycle" oil that is certifed TC-W3 be OK (which appears to be dino) or do you recommend to only use the Pennzoil synthetic for premixing???

Also keep in mind that I use the Pennzoil Platinum synthetic 5w-20 in my RX-8 (heard good things about it from others and used it in my last car and it worked well). So I'm also curious about how some experts feel about the possible mixing of synthetic and premix dino???

I'm currently using Pettit Racing's Protek R

Formulated to meet the extreme demands of turbocharged rotary engines, Protek-R exceeds all expectations. Protek-R, blended in the fuel, helps protect the delicate apex seals and related components that normally receive insufficient lubrication from the stock oil injection system. Recommended usage is 4 OZ per tank of fuel.

Great stuff IMO, my 8 is running nice a smooth.

I would suggest you to order it online.

It cost about 5 bucks a quart anyway.(including shipping)

Question for the premix experts: Any opinions on the synthetic 2-cycle oil branded for McCulloch, MTD, Troy-Bilt, etc. (8 names on the label) produced by Olympic Oil Ltd. I could not find MSDS data on it or anything much else but Olympic makes other Dino oils so I don't think it is Castor based. I would like to use the 3.2oz containers since that should be fine for a premix amount where more may not be better and since I don't always fill when the tank is empty.

guys --dont cheap out on the pre mix. Just like your engine oil-use good quality stuff. Make sure the pre mix oil is catalytic converter safe. That means no castor based pre mix.(there i have said it again!) Synthetic premix is a good way to go. I like to be safe and always go synthetic.

Hi OD, Do pre-mix bottles indicate if their "Castor" base? Which premix is castor base?

Thanks!

Cast out.....

Castor oil is not too common, it is a little exotic and expensive, and the label would definitely say so.

Like Olddragger says, synthetic is best - made for the job. Just look for a general purpose oil that meets ISO standard E-GD, or the Japanese JASO FC specs.

TCW-3 rated oil is for boat motors and has lots of metallic additives to keep everything moving. These would kill a catalyst if used in quantity.
The unburned residue in the exhaust ends up below the surface of a lake, so they tend to put more priority on being bio-degradable. It is common to find it bio-degrading in the boats' oil tank, globbing into a gel.

exactly. some designated boat pre mixs can be coverter friendly( some boat engines actually have converters on them now) but since it can get so dang confusing--just use pure synthetic and be done with it.

The break in process itself is debatable so theres no way you will get a definitive answer on this one.

Sorry to bump an old thread but i had a question about premixing that i didnt find here.

Alot of people are saying theyre premixing with 4 ounces to one tank of gas. Other people are saying that the proper ratio of premix to fuel is 1/2 ounce per 1 gallon of gas. If this is the case then that would be double the four ounces, ie 8 for a full tank of gas.

Which amount is correct? I usually fill up every time my tank runs halfway empty. Should i be adding two or four ounces of oil to the tank?

Also, where are the majority of you guys buying your premix oil? Im still on the fence as to which brand i should be buying. Im deathly afraid of fudging up my engine by adding the wrong oil or too much premix.

depends on what you are doing... the track..

.5 oz per gallon... fine... for the street i was running ~4 oz per tank and it was fixing the power loss problem...

now i am running ~3 oz per tank. with a new motor.. just as protection..

5 oz per gallon is a bit much dont ya think ?

Magsz, I use about 5 oz per fill up. so if I fill-up at 1/2 way, I would put 2.5 oz to 3 for the fill up.

Simple math isnt it ?

in a good way i hope...

note to all reading this... 1/2 oz per gal is great for the track... ~ 5 oz per tank works great for the street..

if you have the new flash and a new motor ~ 3 oz per tank is a safety measure...

I love my car and my goal is to protect it as best i can.

After reading all seven pages of this thread and basically every friggin premix thread on this site i still have one question.

Is premixing for everyone or are only the fellas with older higher mileage cars using this?

If it is going to help extend the life of my engine then i am sure as hell going to be using this tip.

I have tried premix & can't see what the fuss is about .
But I have decided
for normal running around town i'll run 95 octane - no premix
for track days - or when I'm really thrashing it - 98 octane with premix
Track day mix is really just for peace of mind - not to get any performance advantage.
