Phil Laird did a 13.0 with a totally stock Renesis - the only modifications was a MoTeC for engine management, and a fully modified chassis. (well a different chassis - a Mazda 808 Wagon LOL!!!) 200HP at the wheels.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Looks like I'll be dynoing my car on 2-28. I have a B-stock 6MT '06 RX-8 with fresh spark plugs & wires. I have a green air filter and the Mazdaspeed version 2 exhaust. It'll be on a dynojet where the owner tells me that a stock '05-'06 Mustang GT puts down 250-260whp. I'll get a print out which will include afr's and I'll add my dyno plot to this thread. Should be going with a buddy who'll be dynoing his '00 Acura NSX.

Quick question - what gear should I have them dyno the car in? I was thinking 4th???

Not sure how many miles on your car but I would swap your coils if you haven't already.

Really? My car has 45K miles. What's the life expectancy of the OE coils? I thought the spark plugs and plug wires were the parts that needed to be replaced every 30K miles or so (I change these annually as I drive about 20K in a year).

I drive an early 2006 GT and swapped coils out just recently at 42k. The coils in my car were original revision (same as those that were apparently fouling prematurely in the earlier cars). The old coils can last anywhere from 10k to 100k miles from what I've read around the board. My old ones didn't seem to have any issues with them, but I swapped them out anyway with the 2nd revision ones.

Well I think I'll put her on the dyno as is on my current coils and the new spark plugs and plug wires. If my numbers are way out of whack, I'll repalce the coils later this Spring. Otherwise, later this year I'll replace everything together (coils, plugs and wires) as I build the car for STX. Thanks folks.

Not sure if this makes a difference in terms of the coils currently in my car, but I've been told I have a late 2006 base model.

You should replace your coils. They are about $30 each. Especially if you are going to autocross. You won't notice it at cruise but you'll lose your top end above 7.5K You'll see it as a squiggly flat line from there. If you're doing plugs and wires do coils as well or you will be disappointed in your power numbers.

They're just not designed to handle the frequency that the rotary fires it's plugs at so they wear out faster than they would on a comparable piston car. Each plug/coil is firing twice per 720 deg. of crank vs. once on a piston motor.

Thanks for the info. I can get them for around $21 as a Mazdamotorsports member. I've just seen posts by members like swoope who went 70K+ on their original coils with no issues/misfires. The car pulls hard and evenly to redline after doing the plugs & wires.

You guys are killing my weekends...

You wore me down Shaun - coils are ordered! I actually went with Finish Line Performance (Rosenthal Mazda) as they're in VA and I'll get them mid-week. MazdaMotorsports is on the other side of the country and they would have taken 7-10 days to get here. New coils will go on next weekend and I'll dyno the car the weekend afterwards!

P.S. Hope to get an honest to goodness baseline. Later this year I'll start building the car for the STX class with upgrades that will include headers, full exhaust (with high flow cat), pro-tuned Cobb AP, etc. I'll then re-dyno the car at the same shop next year around this time.

Trust me it's money well spent. Half the guys at the last dyno day had a disappointing day just because they had bad coils.

Not to be entirely too picky, but that is an awfully "interesting" plot.
Or, I guess I should say "uninteresting" in that it lacks any of the typical features of this engine.
Is that just the smoothing algorithm?
I mean, the "standard" plot is something to die for!
I think any N/A RX-8 owner would kill to see an output like that.
I know I've never seen it.

Here is a hint - it is a six port for the whole pull.

No smoothing used at all, just the raw data from the superflow.

Cheers,
Hymee.

Nice.
So, 225 peak power and over 150 torque at 5000 with all the ports open?
Remarkable.
Usually, the Renesis will lose as much as 25 ft/lbs at that point with the AUX ports open.

I can't do much more than to post the numbers...

Define "usually" in this context. Like who else has provided anything like this?

Cheers,
Hymee.
