in the states I think it had alot to do with all of the above, but joe shmoe would notice the fuel economy before he would notice excessive hydrocarbons and nox in his exhaust. I'll email the great Mazda Gurus through our online sercice support system about this oil issue and see if they respond. If I get a respoce I'll post it what ever the respoce may be.

They use 5w20 because Ford said so.

Since Ford makes Pathetic cars and thats one of their old tricks to get better emissions.

Here you guys go. It's synthetic oil from Mazdaspeed! It's only around $100 per quart. It's got their name in it so it must be "special". It's actually just Idemitsu that is sold under the Mazdaspeed name. Of course you could just buy it from Rotary Performance for $7.50 per quart but it doesn't say Mazda on it so it must not be as good.

Ok, I am a little lost on the whole synthetic/nonsynthetic debate. I am not a mechanic, nor do I claim to be a smart man, but I fail to see the advantages of synthetic in the rotary. The rotory is so different from a piston engine. I just do not understand how it would help in any way in a rotary.

Why would you see advantages in a piston engine but not in a rotary?

Because rotary engines dont need superior lubrication, anti-sheer and cooling characteristics

In Japan, there are a number of Japanese Pro-Shops/Tuners that sell Synthetic Oil for RX-8s. Its also sold in stores like Autobacs, in Japan.

R-Magic, Speed Master, Re-Amemiya, etc.... to name some (in Japan) and they all have synthetic oil for the RX-8.

These oils are SYNTHETIC and these guys race RX-8s. People can do what they wish, but I think the synthetic oil is better . It was made to be that way. If there is a problem, I think its the result of additive packages, by a few synthetic brands. Mobil 1 got a bad rap, but who knows at this point, since they have upgraded their product.

I think Mazda, simply does not wish to test ALL the different synthetic oils out there and also rather you have a limited choice or get your oil from them.

From Anti-Synthetic babies :

"Synthetics are BAD ! Because Mazda does not recommend them I've had no experience with Synthetic but they must be BAD BAD BAD. Yeah I have Aftermarket Intake/Midpipe/Exhaust/gauges/whatever installed, theres no way it would cause problems because I said so. Mazda does not recommend aftermarket parts? so what? who gives a fuxk about them ? but Synthetic oil is bad."

engine flush? after switching to syn oil

i just got my 8 and it had about 22,000 miles on it. At 24,500 i did an oil change with 5w20 oil and oil fliter. A friend recommended i do an engine flush because the previous owner had used oil. He recommended redline engine flush. Is this recommended, will it damage the rotary engine?
