That is interesting dj55b, looks clean, how loud is the setup?
Anyways i got myself a Scangauge to monitor my IAT
At cruise, on a 12celcius day, i read around 22-26c IAT on the freeway at 100 kph.
I generally see +10 on IAT and when it idles it reaches 50 celcius!!
Therefore i can verify that the pod filter really sucks in some hot air!
As far as i am aware the IAT sensor is in the same housing as the maf?
Now i know the air to air top mount intercooler is not working as it is blitzing hot after a cruise, not a thrashing, so who knows what temp goes into the throttle body!
I can also see a direct reference from the EGT, as the air gets hotter the EGT gets colder, which supports the idea that the temps is too high and the fuel is not combusting fully.
Next test which we will carry out soon, is a few more dyno runs for data logging, we going to install probes into After compressor, After intercooler for IAT to see what they really are.
We are also going for a boost gauge pre intercooler to see how much pressure is lost from the intercooler it self, because right now i have the boost reading off the intake manifold.
The water to air has began construction, we are measuring the size at the moment, after the data is logged it will be submitted to the supplier of the water-air intercooler and we going to fab up some tricked out system, high in cooling, low in pressure loss.
Once that is done the duct will then be removed from the intake air hole and the AEM (that is currently being sprayed by Charles is going to be modified and fit into the bumper for much cooler air)
We should see atleast 10hp increase from the intake temp mods. once the IAT is fixed up, we have a new set of crank pulleys coming in for higher boost.
We are aiming at around 11 - 12psi to reach to "true" highest efficiency on my blower's map and see what power we can extract from that.
The midpipe is also getting replaced by the BHR hi flow cat pipe, retunes after the mods are done, and slightly more aggressive on timing.
Hopefully we can see 180rwkw or 240rwhp (maybe wishful thinking considering it is a rx8 )
Then it is the waiting game of engine vs boost :P
By the way i purchased the latest rx8 Hyper Revs magazine (a full magazine describing maintenance and all JDM parts for the rx8 and expert opinions)
There was a specific section on Forced Inducted RX8, and in the views of RE
High Priorities supporting mods are Radiator & Oil Cooler, with Gauges becoming Secondary, and low priorities are suspensions and brakes

I'll snap his neck.
Yeah, the IAT is in the MAF.
Since we went to a cold air setup with the filter moved behind the bumper, we've seen intake temps as low as 2 degrees above ambient at speed.

have to say...I like how compact that all is. it doesn't look out of place in a way. I look at the turbo'd engine bays and they always look like stuff is everywhere.
though, wouldn't heat from the intercooler just get sucked into the air system being right next to the filter?

the intercooler (or interheater) has a plate wielded into the side that diverts air going into the air filter.
But none the less it will not work with "stock" mounted radiator.
Reason being is the intercooler sitting right above the radiator and the fan which draws hot air up there and lack of airflow to the intercooler.
To make this intercooler setup work, you will need to use a v-mount radiator therefore the path to the intercooler will be open for air from the front of your car and no longer the "used" air after the radiator.
As the problem with the rx8's engine bay is not the lack of air it gets in, but rather the ability for the hot air to get out, i would suggest for people not wishing to go water - air setup to look into running the V Mount, the Rmagic style (vents in front section) bonnet for the hot air to escape and lastly a modified AEM intake to fit into the bumper

Out of curiosity, how come your N/A HP is so low for an RX8?
My Street Ported N/A in its current form puts out 170 rwhp, and I'm actually aiming close to 300 rwhp with around 12psi or so. With around 6 psi I was hoping to be in the 250 whp range.

dj55b,
If you are talking about the original poster, I believe he has an automatic. I'm assuming yours is a manual, so the 1500 extra rpm and less drivetrain loss would explain the lower whp.

as mdw described it is a 4port automatic, both intake ports and drive train loss will contribute to the lower rwhp.
On other hands i have just wielded in new set of bungs on the intake piping for after supercharger and after intercooler.
They are both temperature sensors and pressure sensors to allow us to know the intake temperatures and loss of boost through the intercooler.
The new crank pulley should arrive in a few days.
Looks like we have set a new goal, if possible? who knows, but sure as hell want to make a crack at it. Which will be 300rwhp as an auto, that will involve some long term r&d, boost tweaking, new custom engine (however still a 4port renesis), and more supporting mods such as water/meth injection

Hey Phil
If feb, you will prob still beat me, i am looking at thrashing the old engine end of this year, but introducing as much boost as possible and see where the failure occurs.
Any good luck to you as well!

Ok just done my dyno data logging run.
With the air temp sensor in after charger, after intercooler, and the factory IAT sensor.
It appears that ambiance is 21c, maf is at around 32c, after charger gets to around 65-70, after intercooler it is around 45-50.
Quite hot air going in, but atleast we know the intercooler does do something, the pod filter is sucking in hot air for the bay.
Now the boost gauges in before IC and after IC. This is where we found some surprising data. Pre IC at just 6krpm (no need to turn over more for datalogging) we saw 7.5psi after charger and just 4.9 after cooler, that is around 2.6psi of pressure drop through the core, disgusting....
The data has been sent to the manufacturer of the water to air, and we will fab up something that will drop the charger air drastically, compact, and have very minimal pressure drop.
So once the IC system is in we could almost see my boost go from my current 7psi at 8krpm to around 9.5-10psi after the pressure drop is taken care off.
With the AEM intake coming from BHR, the pod will actually get cold air.
Once we see the outcome of this, once again data log on all piping, we will begin installing a larger crank pulley to introduce more boost, our final target will be around 13-14 pounds of boost.
After that new engine, and water/meth, and see if we can hit that big 300hp at wheel mark for 4 port auto

soooo i blew my transmission... or something, slipped in my own transmission oil did a 360 spin and somehow managed to achieve a perfect parallel parking, between 2 cars...
#245
wouldnt say locked up, just slipped completely on the oil, that burst into a pool, back drove onto it, (i was turning), tail kicked out, wheel locked, front hit oil slipped, and started spinning.
#249
Well put it this way
Atleast i am taking it well.
And it was quite... exhilarating during the spin ey.
Who would've thought it would be the transmission first, i even bought myself a spare motor....
