i agree with you totally rich--but i dunno if 87 will be the best thing after the porting...we'll see

I'm surprised how well mine runs on regular. Even with up to 8 deg extra advance on the top end...it doesn't seem to ping. I have been running 13.2 A/F and 8 deg advance at WOT above 7500, and don't have a problem. I'm going to try a bit leaner in the spring when I go back to cold plugs.

I really enjoy the discussions and the pic's in this thread......keep up the good work......

there's not much load on the engine @7500 rpm.. the biggest load is around peak torque--i'd actually back off one or two degrees there if i had the choice.

Hmm so are you saying using 89 would actually be better for my car? Why is it recommended to use 91 then? What is the point of a higher octane fuel? It's just weird being told by everyone to use higher octane then it's like *screeech* NO.

That is one lame ticket, sorry to hear about that

Another question. If the stock computer is set by the factory to run too rich at the top end (thus the flat power curve after 6k or so), will a ported renesis:

A) Run at a proper a/f ratio, due to the increased airflow (ie, no need to force the ECU to run lean, the extra air is already doing that), or

B) Still run rich, because the ECU compensates for the extra air with even more fuel

I guess what I'm really asking is...will playing around with the fuel/spark settings provide gains on top of what the porting alone will provide?

It won't make any difference in closed loop. It should lean it out in open loop areas where the car is expecting less flow. I think that it would be ideal to be able to tune the ECU with the new flow

(understatement of the century :D)

Can't wait for a tuneable replacement for the ECU that won't have the limitations of the E-manage that I have now (dreamin ...for Christmas.....05?)

since most of the porting was exhaust, there shouldn't be an incredible increase in the amount of air the motor goes through, but:

since it's mass air metered, i believe the maf sensor will pick up most-if not all of the slack for the increased flow and adjust the afr to compensate. but even if it doesn't, we've still got a whole afr point as a safety margin, so i don't think much additional tuning would be required from a safety standpoint. of course, tuning could extract a bit more power though.

Hell in stock tune you have about 11.5 - 12 A/F at WOT...you have a lot of room to add air :D

11.5 is about what i tune 380-400 hp turbo cars to when they're burning 100 octane LOL

Even if it is the oem disc like Charles said it looked like. It's still cheaper than what the dealership was telling me. $250 ouch!!

Thank you Matt for helping me out but I needed something asap. I'm sure I'll be buying more stuff through you. Awesome costumer service I recommend anyone to shop through www.rx8garage.net

I CAN'T WAIT TILL THIS IS DONE....

since i got some time this morning, i wanted to point a few things out.

when i was using the hylomar, i stayed away from the spark plug side-or at least went really thin in that area. i'm trying to make this a stealth rebuild in case snooch ever has to get service. i don't want any red flags to get set off. i think this is the first motor i've done this year that hasn't got painted :p

also, i don't put motors together with big globs of vasaline....that's just a waste and smokes a bunch while it's burning off. just a dab of wheel bearing grease on each corner seal, then in the middle of the side seal to hold it in place while i insert the rotor. this minimises smokng on startup. of course the bearings are lubricated very liberally, and i do pack the oil pump with vasaline, but that doesn't get burned (all at once anyway)... just a little oil or daub of grease on the face of the rotor housings and irons lube it up great.

and here's a tip for anyone building their own engine:
the metal inserts LOVE to pop out of the corner seals, so i used a magnet to hole the seal, insert, and spring and dropped it in all at once. then i just swiped the magnet to the side to release them. saved TONS and TONS of time!!!!!

Now here is a place that the spread in power ratings may be explained. Here's how it works, you're going to the dyno so you get the highest rating fuel you can. You think this will make more power. You were wrong, it always makes the most power with the lowest oct you can get away with not detonating.

If the car runs with regular it will make the most power there. I had the hardest time getting my kid to stop using 104 racing gas in his spec go kart. They all buy that fuel at the races. got him to go to 92 and he runs faster. Still will not belive me and try the 89 maybe the 87. There is more fuel and less additives in the regular. More BTU's more power. Up until you run into abnormal combustion. The unburned additives leave deposits too.

If you pack more air into it then you need the better fuel. It's a balance thing. Here we may have two birds with one stone, more power and less deposits. Don't think you are treating your car poorly on regular if that is what it wants. I see Snoochie runs premium. and ol spiff runs regular. So if ol spif is getting away with regular he has more power and less deposits.

This is good theory but it would be nice to find out on the dyno. I bet no one out there has run on the dyno with regular. If no one else does it I will.
This is very interesting! I've been saying for over a year that my car runs better on 87 regular than it does on 91 premium. It idles smoother, easier to start from a standing stop; more responsive on acceleration. Glad to hear I should have less deposits too. Would any of those deposit removing additives help or hurt a rotary?

i really think redlining it and the occasional water injection is the very best for removing deposits...aside from premixing.

has anyone else started this project, or are you all waiting for dyno results first?

Waiting for results.. I'm sure they'll be excellent, but I'm gonna be sinking a bit of cash into this so I can't just jump in without knowing.

Alright I'm sure you all will be just as frustrated as me. This is the convo I had with my mom last night.

"Are you gonna be home 2marow morning"
"Yeah"
"Are you going ANYWHERE"
"No I don't have anywhere to go"
"You REEEALY need to be home at 10:30 to get my cltuch disk I work"
"Okay"
"Do you understand"
"Yes go away"

Then I call home when I get off work

"Hey did they drop it off"
"No I went to the psot office and missed it"

I swear someone is going to die. I pay for the useless overnighting. I'm forcing her to go get it while I'm at work and I'll drive over and drop it off tonight. Is that cool dave? It'll probably be at like 11:00. Considering I have to wake up at 4:45 in the morning to go to work I'm pretty pissed about this.

Mom - "Oh they dropped off your license plate frame"

"Thanks cause you know you can't put a car back together without that!!!"

Yeah you're gonna be at JGTC. I hate you. Hehe. If I drop it off tonight will it be finished any earlier than if I give it to you this weekend. Basically are you gonna get back on it 2marow or monday? Because I'd love to take it over to the speedway but I work all day 2marow and sunday.

Well that, and to see if your ECU freaks out or anything weird.

His power peak also came at about 7000 rpm or so when it should have come at 8500. Something is wrong with that. His motor is peaking where the 13B's should peak rather than where the Renesis should peak. The stock ecu also can't compensate and he claims that it hasn't been touched. He's done good work on rotaries in the past but he doesn't ever tell you anything useful and his dyno claims are misleading. It is also very rare that you ever see any pictures of his ports. There's nothing secretive about enlargening a port. You can stare at a picture all day but it doesn't mean that you can copy it.
My engine is ported in ways that go beyond the average port. You say is rare to see pics of my ports.. Go to the other forum and you will see tons of pictures of my ports. From mild to wild, to semi-peripheral ports. to full bridgeports. You name it I have done it and posted pics. I have been called the Michael Angelo of porting.
My engine has been ported for almost a year now. And still ticking... I find myslef not having the time to dyno my nitrous set up, since I'm in the middle of selling my business..
