custom intercooler for a turbo
hi, i have a turbo set up for awhile using t67 precision, but decided to change the turbo set up to G35r with T04E, and planning to change my intercooler set up.
as a current , my intercooler is a big one, but it blocks the whole radiator, so just try to get some advice from the community.
this is my current:
and looking around, Godspeed..it's a cheap one, but doens't mean it will not work. i believe some people use them in trubo RX8...
what do you guys think?
well, at the same time, if you guys have some aftermarket intercooler, please if you guys don't mine sharing it in this thread....

Steven,
You could just move to a quality Garrett core that would be half that size around 6" tall. This would only block a smaller section of the radiator's air. Combined with a larger mouth bumper, and no crash bar like you currently have it should improve it a lot.

Have you considered v mount?
There was some recent discussion here about v mount set ups. https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-major-horsepower-upgrades-93/turblown-turbo-system-differences-226354/page2/

george,
it's negative because i remove my coilsto where you put the coils are...so i have to use a smaller intercooler that can handle my set up..it's exacly like how turblown intercooler where you lay it down. so, the godspeed style is really good with the type i want, but i don't know the quality...you can see the pic below my coils...
yeah i know, that's what i am working on, but i need the different style of intercooler which is like the godspeed. but i don't know the quality of it or it works the same as regular IC..i like the turblown set up, but i need to get the same size with decent price..

..
above is just a try to change the set up...lol...but if i use the GODspeed style, and put the outlet and inlet in the same position and flat it or angle up little bit, it will be nice...but i don't know about the GodSpeed ..i don't want it to create a hot air instead of cooler air..lol..

i don't really care about Vmount or not , but if i can lay or angle the IC, do you think the IC will get the same air as the Radiator?
i think one of member in this forum has it..wait, let me see..i think it's greg..
like the set up above...turblown makes it too..have you ever had an experience toward the godspeed IC?

brettus, i read your thread which you got the bigger IC and you got the heat problem because it blocks the radiator. where do you get it from ? what brand is it? and how much? if you don't mind i ask...
i just need to know if it works the same as a regular IC ?

If you read the last page of that thread I detailed the differences.

Steven,
5/6 years ago I had an FD show up at my shop with that unit installed. It was terrible( it was however installed without any ducting, in the Stock Mount Location which is right above the radiator). I can tell you by looking at it the end tank design is terrible, and you probably won't use much of that core. The ebay cores do have less pressure drop than Garrett units, but they don't cool anywhere near as good. You have to consider a lot of things when selecting an inter-cooler, one is ambient temps, discharge temperature of the turbo, and how the car is being driven. If its not road course raced, you don't need those huge inter-coolers( like what you currently have). This is especially true on an Rx-8 as 99% of people aren't running high enough boost to create high turbo discharge temps. If you are going to lay the intercooler flat( parallel to the ground) it should be a bigger core. I will try and get a picture of the smaller intercooler setup..
I will get your turbo on its way soon. Happy new years.

Steven,
Here it is;
Garrett intercooler 24" Wide - 6.5" Tall - 3.0" Thickness. 2.5" inlet and outlet
On the car here currently the crash bar has 3" of the center area behind the mouth of the bumper removed. So there is 5" by the width of the bumper mouth of uninterrupted airflow direct to the radiator. If I remember correctly pretty similiar to the greddy unit, just higher cooling efficiency from the garrett design.

I decided to share my experience in one thread what I started with..
finally, I did lot of researches about intercoolers, and now I found a good size intercooler..
core: 22"x8"x3.5" bar/plate with staggered fins and louvered front fins..it's medium density fins..
I decided to go with the end tank design because I believe it will use the whole rows, bottow to top for better cooling.
next, I tilt it on the certain angle (not too low), so I can still have the air going in into the top radiator, but at the same time the intercooler will receive the same amount of air, as how it is mounted vertically..
I decided to get the smaller intercooler because my future veiside bumper has a smaller front opening compare to mazdaspeed, and bigger is not always better....
my car is not readyyet, but once it's started again, I will report the temp..
the intercooler looks flush with the front bumper because of the veilside bumper....
I still need to trim the reinforcement bar..
this is just rough look....I hit a car on the passenger side, so I can't relly mount the bumper, but it's just a trial..
if you have any ideas, advices, and experiences, please share here for the intercooler set up....please keep the thread positive..
