And what happens when you plug something into the external slot? How do you access that audio source from the radio? Why not just use that instead of the internal plug your going for? Depending on your answers, us desperate iPod users may indeed be able to use one of the PIE devices and a cable from crutchfield to hook up out ipods now, finally!

If you're that desperate, buy a tape module, and do the improved tape-in aux hack.

I can't speak for how the guys at PIE have implemented their unit. It could work numerous ways, but someone already mentioned elsewhere that you press the CD button twice quickly. However it requires a CD changer on the other end.

The reason I want to use the internal plug, is because you have to enable eah audio source seperately. I don't think you can get the audio source into the radio from the rear connector as easily. Time will tell, I'm going to be doing more testing soon.

ps. the solder-in solution is coming.. just hold your horses.

improved tap aux ... I knew of the first one you did was there a better one? Also how does the sound quality compare to that of your aux mod?

The first tape hack had the audio line going into the tape modules pre-amp.

The improved hack is to de-couple the input from the tape module on the circuit board, and solder on the inputs to your own source directly onto the pins of the tape connector module.

Sound quality is as good as the radio is capable of. It's at least as good as the CD sound. Make sure you use a good input with shielded cable and it'll sound good from the iPOD/mp3/audio device of your choice to plug into it.

Regards,
O

And it runs windows!!! I'd say its a pretty safe bet that, one way or another, your car is definitely going to crash now!

Well there ain't no mini-itx mobo for mac is there! There's no good GPS software written for Linux or any flavor of Unix. There aren't many good front-ends written for Linux, and none for Mac. Looks like your choice is Windows or Windows.

Actually you could use a laptop like an older G3 powerbook, and there is plenty of nav gps software for mac. I don't know what you mean about no front ends for mac either? But I'm just glad that my RX8 can't get any viruses :-)

Please don't turn this into yet *ANOTHER* Mac vs. Windows thread. This is a forum about a car and a thread about an aux module.

If you feel you absolutely MUST have your purely opinionated discussion about operating sytems, please do it on your own thread.

Sorry, that may have come across as a bit brash, but I for one am getting tired of seeing the same debate sprout up and take over one or two pages smack dab in the middle of some thread I'm reading on this forum.

Your operating system of choice is exactly that: a choice (unless of course your OS has been determined because of some sort of business requirement). I happen to have my OS of choice and I happen to loath the other opreating systems of choice. But I still choose to respect other peoples decisions to run what they're comfortable with.

I'm not trying to sound like I'm asking us all to "just get along" but I am asking that if you really do hate an OS that much more then the one you run, please don't start the same debate over and over again in the middle of someone elses thread.

I want one badly too. I'm hoping that OverLOAD is considering the AUX port on the back of the unit as well. I know the port doesn't work exactly the same, but I think it would be easier for users to connect and it also appears that the connector might be easier to obtain.

I'm pretty sure OverLOAD is looking into this port as well, he's made several posts in the thread that talks about it.

I don't really car where it plugs in, I just really want the thing .

Ok, here's my "great idea." Check out these guys. "Larry" designed his own eTrex cable connector and put a great deal of effort into the project. I suspect he may have some ideas on how best to fabricate a connector. Below is a photo of the stamping machine he bought to make the connector...

After reading through this whole thread it's obvious that the unit hasn't shipped because I forgot to let Overload know I wanted one. There. The unit should ship any day now!

vaporware.. it's almost 6 months since OVERLOAD started this project, and still no unit.. Why? because of a small connector issue, which he has been struggling with for 3 months. I don't think it will ever come out.

Why doesn't he just offer the kit without the connector? It's not like everyone is completely unable to wire tihngs themselves.. All we need is the interface..

The connector is sounding like more of an excuse... Sorry if I sound like a skeptic, but frankly, I'm not waiting any longer.. I finally broke down and bought an iPod mini (now that they're in!) and XM Radio setup. It would have been nice to have this AUX-In unit, but I'll go with the FM Modulator because it actually works.

Good patience to all those continuing to wait. I've run out. 3 Months for a connector? c'mon now....

If you think you can do better... then do it! Put your money where your mouth is... go source the connector. OverLOAD posted the information for anyone that wishes to try to help. I sincerely doubt he'll care who manages to source this for him, as long as it actually gets done.

As mbkowns has posted, OverLOAD is preparing to release the module without the connector for those who can/are willing to DIY.

I hope your enjoy your FM modulator.

Personal preference ok, but don't pee in Overload's cornflakes. He's doing a big favor for RX-8 owners and other Mazda owners. You'll probably be ripping that modulator out as soon as the aux-in is available :p

Hey, I've been running the FM modulator for 2 months now(Actually, I've tested three different mfg's models), and they all have one thing in common: TERRIBLE SOUND QUALITY!!!

I don't know about you, but I didn't pay $500 for my 20GB iPod to listen to FM-quality audio. Plus, due to the fact you're trying to use this thing in a moving car, you need to keep changing the frequency to avoid interference from radio stations whose broadcast areas you run into.

This AUX project is the only good solution for getting MP3 players to work in the RX-8. So me, I'll keep waiting for it. Until then, I'll be ripping my MP3s to CD.

Can someone post some pics of the kind of wires we'll need to solder to actually do it ourselves? Like I can't do tiny tiny surface mount stuff, but I can do simple wires and stuff. But I'd really need to see what your talking about in the DIY version.
