i just want a solution

Question for Overload: would a soldering solution mean simply attaching wires from the connector to the HU? If that's all that's involved I would be willing to give it a try right now.

As voiced earlier, all I really want is a solution to hook up my iPod. That means aux. inputs or dension's product. I like the integration of the icelink thing, but I want it now and would even consider buying that alpine adapter to hook it into. I'm not thrilled will shelling out the close to $300 it would take to buy those two products, but I'm really getting antsy. Also (not trying to keep this thread diverted) But I'd get rid of my car before I gave up my Mac.

you mac bastards! I'd burn every mac before I would give away my zoom zoom :p

But yeah, we're getting impatient. very. need a aux-in solution very soon.

Create a Website

This Thread is starting to be off topic a bit and I admit for helping that a tad. Sorry ... I think I might make one with a web blog... with all the pictures from this page on it and a way to post more with out having to have a login.

I've been saying that! Overload make a pretty decent web site if you want me to help you out. You may even pay me in an aux module if you like ;-) just kidding.

for spicedham:
before you go running out to buy the PIE adaptor for the alpine changer and the mbus to rca adaptor, find the other information on here somewhere that the people at PIE have already said that method will not work -

for the people unhappy about the size of this thread, why don't we just start a second thread - a part two - so that this one remains intact and we all switch over to the newer one. (and maybe if we're real lucky overload will give us regular updates on the new thread too)

The problem is this thread has gotten so long and out of control, it will take someone new to this topic 3 or 4 hours to read all the way through it just to find out that we're still just waiting for overload. What i think should happen is... this thread should be locked. I new thread should be started, as a sticky, that mainly is just for overloads updates, and ALSO, he should set up a web site for this device, even if its just a simple basic text one for now while the device is still being developed.

It can be moderated and kept on topic, plus if theres a web site to keep us all up to date, then we won't end up here just chatting about it out of curiosity.

Just relax- he'll have a website when he's ready, and there's already such a long list of waiting customers I doubt he needs to generate any more 'buzz' about it at this time.

It's easy enough to come to this thread once a week or so and look for any new posts by "the man". Other than that I'm on overload's email list so any real progress will probably get a notification there. Not to worry. If this doesn't pan out there is always the tape-deck hack.

Yes, USB would be a good choice if Overload can implement it easily.
Keyphrase: if I can implent USB easily.

If I could, I would have chosen it, for obvious reasons. However to do that, and not have a serial port interface built into the interface is pointless, since then you need a custom API to talk to the thing. USB isn't that easy. first you make the hardware, then you need a software driver for each different OS in the world.

If you want to communicate with an external device, serial is the way to do it. It was the universal de-facto standard 30 years ago, and will be for another 15 to 20 years at least.

There's no reason not to use serial. all the excuses in the world don't add up to not using an interface as simple and ubiquitous as serial rs-232. We've got tons more speed over serial than we'll ever need, and it is avaialble on EVERY PC in the world. If you say 'my mac doesn't have serial', go buy a usb-serial adapter, and yes, you can force them to use COM1.

I know USB is cool, and hip, and everyone wants it instead, including me, but it's just not practical for this.

Regards,

OverLOAD

p.s. yes, the tape hack can substitute for this and do a pretty decent job. It's been updated a bit and can have a direct audio line in to resolve all the audio quality issues.. just no potential for remote control or any of the nice stuff this module would add.

That's fine by me. at least there'd be a product out there that does (some of) what we want.

Forum rules say I can't answer. If & When, you will get an email to tell you what the scoop is.

I agree with the first part, and strongly disagree with the second.

But putting that aside for now, hows about a stats update on the device? Where do you stand? How are things going? I emailed you, you did put me on your mailing list right?

Actually, i believe OverLoad is 100% correct. The reason you dont see rs232 on products nowadays IS because everyone wants a USB device. But in all reality i would say most development is done through rs232's. USB is a novelty that most devices dont need. If you want to talk to a microprocessor, hook up the serial, write your simple C proggy and you're good to go. USB? Good luck!

At least that's my personal experience. There is more than enough bandwidth available, it's easy to use. So why wouldnt you?

Because I haven't owned a computer with a serial port in 5 years :-D
