yes, the valet mode will be nice since i the last time I had to explain to some punk valet at the hotel that if he revs the **** out of my car again when its completely cold his life would be ended...
My idea of a joke is to set a customer's idle speed to 5500 RPM!
Is this valet mode a separate flash, or an option in the AP menu? I haven't looked.
If its a flash, I can make it really scare the crap out of the valet (without damaging the motor).

I could set the car up to only run for 3 or 4 seconds at a time.
I could make the gas pedal work backwards.
I could make the motor shut down as soon as you put it in 3rd.
Silly stuff like that.

so 89 octane... yay or nay? My wallet votes yay if possible
I hate you...heh
The crap we get here in Phoenix is effectively 89, even though it is labeled 91.
That said, you get a HUGE menu of tunes that are progressively more aggressive.
You can go as high as you feel comfortable.
At this point, each basic calibration comes in something like 10 flavors. So, you are looking at 50 or more selections that you can use to adjust for fuel trim and intake combinations as well as effective power levels.
I don't buy into the whole "Stage I, Stage II" thing.
Its a continuum. I'm not trying to promise you power levels.
You select the calibration that is appropriate for your conditions and the power falls where it may.

I do what I can.
All of you know I have a low tolerance for BS, so I'm certainly NOT going to BS anyone just to get their money.
Honestly (and I don't expect anyone who doesn't know me to totally believe this), I don't offer this thing just because I can make money on it.
If I did, I would have been shoving E-Manages down everyone's throat for that past two years.
I really believe this thing is going to totally change the power market for the RX-8 and make a lot of people that are fairly happy, very happy.
BTW - my second PO will be going in on Friday, so anyone that wants one of these in the first wave should get on it.
Otherwise, I probably won't put in another PO until I have a 1/2 dozen or so more orders, which may take a week (or two).
I'm not pushing, but I know there are people out there that will say "I want one!" on Monday and then start pounding my e-mail on Wednesday wondering where it is.

hey mm, since you are already pretty near shipping off your first few, are you still going to keep updating the maps continuously? what sort of things will you be changing over time? perhaps changing things to gain more power?
It's a separate flash.
I'm pretty convinced that the flashes I ship with the device will cover 99% of everyone's requirements.
If not, I'll make changes as necessary.
If I do make improvements, I'll make them available.
Ah. OK.
Well, I can do that, but it seems like a pretty inconvenient thing to do just to constrain your car for a few minutes while you eat dinner.
However, if you are going to leave your car somewhere for any length of time, it might be a good idea.
It is important to keep in mind that Denso believes that their PCM (the one in your car) is only good for a few hundred flashes.
Cobb has certainly found out otherwise - its probably good for thousands of flashes - but I'd probably be more comfortable only flashing it for more worthwhile purposes.

An interesting limitation I hadn't thought of. I was thinking of flash for track day / catless and then back to stock / with-cat tune. Flash once a month is like 25 years though.
I thoguht I remember reading that they developed some particular tech to avoid "reflashing" per se (exactly because of the stock reflash limitations). Instead, they just do some switching internally between maps. Maybe that doesn't apply to the RX-8? The STI description mentions "on-the-fly mode switching."
That tech is not yet implemented in the RX-8 PCM.
It requires hijacking some free memory in the PCM, which Cobb hasn't gotten around to yet.
That same technology will also allow live tuning, which would make the dyno experience considerably more enjoyable with this device.

Generic update: I wish I could be more specific, but with the small percentage in increase powerwise, I won't be a goober and say "Holy ****, this thing flies now!!" I notice better throttle response from about 5.7/6k RPM and up. Down low, I don't really perceive any difference at all.
As far as the AP itself, still cool, and if you have any experience with one, I'm sure it's just the same. I finally downloaded the AP Manager software so I could store the maps to my laptop (which is basically all the Manager software is).
I know most of this has been answered in bits and pieces in numerous different threads, but it is some more general newbie questions just for clarification:
1. It seems that the 'one size fits all' tunes from Mazda and Greddy can sometimes be pretty far off from the optimal tune of each car and I guess that depends on one's luck. With the AP, and more specifically, the way Jeff will further narrow the 'one size fits all' into several more such as the N/A, N/A no cat, F/I, F/I no cat, etc. I assume this will help those without access to good tuners and/or dyno tuning to get that much closer to the optimal tune. We have that many more tunes to choose from, and with the feedback and data logs we can provide, it was mentioned that even our personal cars can be further optimized by Jeff and this will get really 'close' to maximizing our cars.
So my vague question is whether or not this can get us close enough so that it is no longer worth it to spend the money on dyno tuning and the future software needed to further tweak the settings (it'd be a waste of money, hopefully)- I guess this depends on whether or not we think it is worth it to spend x dollars for 2 or 20 more horsepower, which is again, subjective, but you get the idea.
2. I think Jeff mentioned that he didn't remove his EMU until after tweakin the AP a bit so does that mean I flash the PCM first and remove the emu later or can I just yank the EMU first?
3. How much gains will I get with this AP if I start workin out in the gym with heavier weights and if I plug it into my satellite receiver can I get more HDTV channels with the right tune?

I didn't read that, so I don't know how true it is, but the EMU for FI use works by modifying fuel when it sees boost. Outside of boost, the EMU doesn't do much (except for corrections for the cruising map). So it's possible to run the AP while the EMU is installed for tweaking non boost maps.
