AccessPORT Alpha test started

Well, I picked up the AccessPORT this morning, which is the good news. The bad news is, due to a scheduling conflict with the dyno, I'm still running on the stock map. Good news is, when plugged in, and when we tested saving and uploading the stock map, it didn't brick my ECU.

I played with it on the drive home, and the live data function is pretty cool. Lots of different things to monitor there (including coolant temp! no more dummy gauge) We're working on rescheduling dyno testing for early next week. For now, a few teaser pics from my car.

I'll let folks know what I think of the Cobb map once I can get that loaded and on the dyno for comparison runs.

Winning 8 02-16-2008 04:12 PM

how much it cost??

huzer21 02-16-2008 04:31 PM

I think regular retail is going to be $695. Not positive, though.

chancejat 02-16-2008 04:36 PM

did you try the cobb map.....just to see if you can feel anything real with your butt dyno?

EDIT: FIRST DYNO ON PAGE 11.....

huzer21 02-16-2008 04:39 PM

They said they (they meaning the tuning shop) didn't have the map available yet. Apparently, they didn't check their email prior to me showing up today. They had asked for VIN, year, information earlier in the week and just sent the info to Cobb once I showed up. Since they were busy doing other things, we had to reschedule for that portion of the test. Just flicking through the live data is pretty cool. It'll take people far more experience than I to interpret some of the data that's coming across.

Odds are I'll be back down there Mon or Tues for further testing. I guess the only thing determined thus far is that it didn't fry the ECU.

Awesome, keep us updated to the minute. Did you recieve a manual or anything with it outlining its capabilities and what readings it provides?

HiTMaNN 02-16-2008 07:23 PM

You lucky bastage

scsi 02-16-2008 09:14 PM

is this thing able to read and remove CELs too?

huzer21 02-16-2008 09:27 PM

Yes it is.

swoope 02-16-2008 09:36 PM

is it able to eliminate any continuous cel permanently???

beers

My Nintendo DS is more bad ass

davefzr 02-17-2008 02:18 PM

Whatever that means.

Thankx for the pictures and all of your comments. They are much appreciated.

Finally a review of the product has been posted. I have been waiting a long time to get any additional information on this product that I can.

Cant wait to purchase one myself, barring good results of course... :)

Where is the review :uhh: :uhh: :uhh: Am I missing out on something? Someone link me!

huzer21 02-17-2008 03:35 PM

Hopefully, I'll have a review of the Cobb Stage 1 map early this week. As of right now, all I can really report is that the device itself works as advertised. If anyone wants to know exactly what live data it monitors, I can provide that. Display is bright and easily readable, day and night. Easy to scroll through the various functions. Otherwise, I'll be following up with the impressions of the Cobb map as soon as that happens.

I will say this much, the OBD2 port is right inline with the clutch pedal. And the Cobb plug is a little bulky. Driving with it plugged in is fine, but just be careful when sliding you foot in for the first time, as it would be easily kicked.

staticlag 02-17-2008 03:42 PM

Can you post up what the unit will do?

I mean, it supposedly has the capability to read and remove cells?

Is that part of the base unit or do you need to purchase the tuner software to access stuff like that?

nelsonrx8 02-17-2008 03:49 PM

im interested in what it would monitor

so i don't buy gauges i don't need

davefzr 02-17-2008 03:57 PM

Your not going to have the AP installed all of the time though, so the basic gauges you still may want to have. Exhaust Temp, Water/Oil temp, air fuel, etc...

While driving with any type of analyzer (hymee, harrison) the odbii port is plugged in all the time and you do have to be cognizent of this, but it's not hard to adjust to.

I would definitely recommend having at least an afr gauge though.

huzer21 02-17-2008 04:16 PM

Scrolling through the AP itself, here's what I've found for the RX-8 AP.

For Live Data, it keeps track of:

Accel Pedal Pos
Vehicle Speed
Rel Throttle Pos
Ign Tim. Trailing Coil
Ign Tim. Leading Coil
Short Term FT1
Long Term FT1
RPM
Metering Oil Pump Position
Mass Airflow
Engine Load
Intake Temp
Fuel Pulse Width
AFR
Coolant Temp
Battery Voltage

While you can monitor the above data, I wouldn't recommend using the AP as a gauge. That's not it's intended use, and you'll always have a cable connected from the connector to the AP unit itself.

You can also check your fuel economy, both instant and average. Do performance numbers, although those are limited to 0-60 and 1/4 mile times.

That's not the big deal with the AP. You can also check and clear your own CELs. Now, THAT'S not the big deal either. The biggest thing is the ability to save your current ECU flash, and upload new maps to the ECU. Initially, it'll be maps from Cobb (once it goes on sale, you'll be able to download maps over the internet, as well as AP updates as well). After you load your new map, you can disconnect the AP and wander on your merry way. It's not a piggyback device. And, once the Streettuner software is out, you can (at your own risk) create your own maps.

Please keep in mind the above live data that's monitored MAY change, as this may not be the final release of the AP.

My8DriftsMe 02-17-2008 06:24 PM

I want to see a mustang dyno run without it and then one with it tuned =) my local shop they would order me one as soon as they are released.

huzer21 02-17-2008 06:58 PM

Hopefully I'll get word that I'll be on the dyno soon. Unfortunately, I can't post numbers until the AP is officially released.

Watching with interest.

it may have that capability eventually, but you better double check before you lead everyone to believe it will out of the box. I don't think that's the case.

BigRed 02-17-2008 07:52 PM

i just might have to save up some money... :)
