on further improving the stock intake box... think i am just gonna go back to pepboys and find a aluminum piping that i can shove in the stock flexpipe...

i wanna clarify that i've rechecked the condition of the sheet metal and seems like its not strong enough to hold up. so ditch that.

and for those who really think its a waste of time to remove or mod the stock intake...they got the right to their opinion. i never really did say i was in it to "pursue" more power. but rather not have it in to concentrate the dirt on one area. but common sense, even not goin to the engineering or "dyno" side of things tells me that removing such said plates is the same as removing the restrictions.

who wants a restrictive intake? i bet no-one does.

 

he is correct, every screen you take out gives the car 1-2 hp. If racing beat said it, i believe it. I will try and post my video of the sound today. just gotta get to photobucket.

maybe screwing up the idle, but most of the people who have taken them out, didnt see any changes, or it idled better. Im still skeptical about mine. I have to see how its doing after a week. (let the PCM make adjustments)

 

Well, as far as i know, taking out the screens isnt changing the pipe size, and removing the walls has seemed to have no effect on anything except for sound, and then getting a better air filter should help the engine. a better breathing engine is a happy engine. If i and wrong about anything, please explain. I hope i am not doing anything to shorten the life of my engine, as i want it to last as long as possible

 

Yes i realize that this is old news, and i do respect you and what you say on here. I should not had promoted the throught for everyone to do this mod, as every car seems to respond to mods in a different way. I am still hesitant on my own results cause sometimes when i am slowing down, the idle is not steady. So i might go back to having one screen in the tube as racing beat suggests. anyways i was just trying to help out some of the newer members or people who did not know about this mod. It makes me feel really proud, because just a month or two ago i would have been asking the same questions and now i am the one teaching (more or less). I dont mean to steal anyones glory on this mod, but i do retract my statements i said in my earlier posts. I DO NOT recommend this mod to everyone. Each persons car/engine is different. You may do it, but do it at your own risks. If anything happens, put everything back into its orgininal place.

If the engineers at Mazda didn't want me removing those resonance plates, they wouldn't have affixed them to the intake with screws, they would have made it of a single piece of plastic.

Since the RB intake isn't california smog legal, I think I will just leave the plates out, and possibly remove a single screen. I'm not looking for horsepower, just trying to remove all the **** they put into my 8 for regulatory reasons (like the fog lights that only turn on with headlights on, or resonance plates to keep the intake quiet.)

Free is a lot better then 300 bucks too.

taking out the screens doesn't seem to mess with the idle on my car. If anything it didn't really do anything at all except give it a little "umphhh" in sound. I replaced my stock filter with a k&n drop in and i must say that it is louder. Sorta sounds like i have an after market intake

and for people opposing to attempt this mod, it is a respectable opinion. The stock intake is good as it is and further modifying it wouldn't do much at all. I just like to try new things since ive done so much to this car and all my results were positive

 

i put one of the screens back in, as it does idle smoother and more consistent with one screen. and i tried uploading my videos from my phone, but i guess they arent the right format.

 

Imagine that....all the Engineering and testing that Racing Beat put into the development of the Revi Intake was actually well thought out and backed up by data. Hmmmmmm?????

IMO.......if there was a chance of idle issues with both screens out and it didn't make anything but a minuscule HP increase, why take the chance? That and it might actually help keep some other object out of your intake that snuck past the filter in the event of a tear.

yup, i didnt want to take the chance, so i put it back in. yes i know, im almost to 700, but most of them are valid, and im not just post whoring, im just on here a lot.

 

Curious, do you have any visible variation in idle rpm on the tach now?

@Charles: That stance on publishing tried & true results is very respectable. It's very easy to be lured into something that is "too good to be true..", especially if you're someone without much experience.

 

with one screen there is very little to none, but with no screens the idle dipped every 30 seconds or more.

 

I've had my walls out for about a year now and I guess that's the reason why I never noticed the idle change. I'll post a video on a "before and after idle" tomorrow. I'll fully warm up my car, drive it around a little bit, and film with the walls on and then I'll do it with the walls off. I'll show you the noise difference in the video.

 

i really would only take out the plates/walls. removing the screens are a bit extreme.

honestly, i would only modify on the stock parts to where it makes sense... or whatever that is for me. taking out the screens would leave more chance of debris going in... i only saw an opportunity with the stock one from really carefully comparing to the RB unit. and i can see why there really isn't THAT much of a difference. because there really isn't much to improve on.

the obvious are the removed walls on the RB box and different tube length/filter assembly. so essentially you are paying an price that they've invested to squeeze out as much HP as possible from an already "perfect" intake. not ridiculous to ask for...but we have to really give it up for RB and thank them for that there really isn't much to improve on. so...really, there is no need for all the B.S. dyno mumble jumble. for those who wants better flow, keep engine clean, sacrifice nothing or compromise any driveability....just grab a K&N drop in and remove the plate/wall. i'd move on elsewhere to smooth out air flow then remove screens. but hey, thats my opinion. i just won't take the chance. and obviously RB won't take that chance either.

i'm not trying to stop anyone here who's got recommendations, but we gotta have to at least have 1/2 a brain here to see if its worth your time and risk.

 

and to add to trochiod, if you do take out any screens only take out one
