Don't let Gomez coment about girls get to you, if you need help get before you do something wrong. But in all seriousness it is a simple install and you just need common hand tools.

I have had the shifter for about three months with no issues. Lately I notice that first gear requires more force than normal. The extra force is required not when I’m stopped but when I’m rolling. What can the issue be? I recently changed the transmission fluid but all other gears feel great. Any ideas?

Even in OEM form, our car doesn't like to go into 1st unless--damn near close--at a stop. With the AFE, it's stiffer and that's what makes it feel harder to go into. But I do remember with my OEM shifter, even at 5-6 mph, 1st would be difficult so I'd revv up and go to 2nd. I really don't think the shifter has anything to do with the 2-1 shift.

I never noticed it before but it could be that since I just chnged the fluid I've been paying more attention. Just in case I'm checking the fluid level again. Thanks for your input.

I just installed an Axial Flow shifter this past weekend and initially ran into some high-pitched gear whine harmonics that resulted in me removing the SS, re-installing my old shifter, and listing the Axial Flow for sale. I decided to call Richard Paul as a last resort to discuss the dilemma, and one of the items he mentioned might be having an affect on my SS install was the use of my VooDoo metal ****. So.....I re-installed the SS (I am getting really fast at this btw!), and this time re-installed the green felt and then twisted-on my factory shift ****. To my happiness, the annoying harmonic was gone and I have no discernible noise whatsoever. The shifting and sound factor is perfect now, so I deleted my shifter FS ad and now have to try and sell my piano black VooDoo ****!

Thanks for spending the time talking with me Richard, its good to deal with a guy who stands behind his products!

Yeah, I found that my metal Voodoo **** just didn't compliment the AFE SS at all. Not only did it create A LOT more noise, but the shifting is actually smoother with the stock **** back on. I think the voodoo **** lowered the leverage point and caused the shifter motion to be harder on the syncros and gears.

Well...I would have never believed a shift **** could make a night and day difference, but it did. I loved my VooDoo, but the mix of the two didn't seem to work. On the stock shifter the VooDoo is excellent though..

i have voodoo and afe, and the noises i hear go away when i unscrew the ****.

doesn't matter - a little transmission whirring noises doesn't bother me. If I wanted sound isolation I would have bought something else.

The harmonic noise I was hearing was pretty annoying. You know what its like to have a mosquito buzzing in your ear. It was like that but of course magnified a huge amount. I am thinking that all of these SS's have slightly different tolerances as do our cars tranny's. I knew I had read about others that were running both AFE and the VooDoo with no problems so I think its car and shifter dependent. Perhaps I should try wrapping the shifter threads with teflon tape and reinstalling the VooDoo just to see if it makes a difference. Can't hurt.

As far as being noise tolerant, one of my prior cars an Evo VIII, had a real audible whine to the gear box and I loved the way it sounded sort of mechanical. Porsches also have that sort of gear whine as well. This high pitched whine I ran into yesterday was not like either of those, and it was loud enough it had me wanting to get rid of it.

N10S, Then I retract my previous statement. On my car is isn't unpleasant, but is detectable without trying to listen for it. I might make a recording of it so we can all compare.

No problem, I just wanted you guys to know that I am not a girly-man when it comes to my cars. Swoope, you mentioned having the cork between the shifter and ****...do you mean on the top of the shift rod? Thats interesting as I had used a piece of adhesive rubber cut down to size on the top of my stock shifter. I didn't put it there to cancel-out noise, but added it to make my shift pattern on the laser-etched **** sit straight. Thats worth trying before I sell a good VooDoo **** that was a bit difficult to find in the original size.

Thanks again for the comments and I will let you know how the test with the VooDoo turns-out.

There's a thread somewhere on the Rx8club site where someone took some packing foam and placed it between the shifter and the ****. They said it killed the sound and was quieter than the stock shifter.

Question, I have the AFE shifter and I like it, but since having it on it seems that shifting at times can be more of a chore. A little more notchiness going from gear to gear. Sometimes going into a gear call for quite more effort to push it through. I've just lived with it up to now, but I'm wondering what I can do to make it better.

try bleeding your clutch or adjusting clutch pedal freeplay.

Not sure of the exact spec (perhaps someone else can chip in here) - but you should have a minimum of freeplay on your clutch pedal before you feel it hit the pressure plate fingers . This can be adjusted at the slave cylinder under the dash .
