Their Miata header flange is also cast stainless. They are probably doing the RX-8 flange the same way for the same reason. The exhaust ports are rectangular and they are going to use round tubing. Rather than crimp down or bend the pipe to make it rectangular, they cast the transition shape into the flange. This makes assembly a much simpler thing.

that's the thing I love with all the RB stuff I've bought: Assembly and fit is ALWAYS spot on!
It should be worth the wait.

What I want to know is, can we turn it upside down and use it as a turbo manifold?

Well?

No. While the manifolds are symmetrical from front to back, they aren't from top to bottom. If you flip it, and assuming of course that it cleared everything, it will no longer bolt to the engine.

doesn't make much of a difference. Pick the exhaust you like the best and GET IN LINE for this bad boy cus I'm sitting at the front of the line.

quick question: are headers pointless if you plan to go turbo in the future?

yeah, the headers wont' be resused when you go Turbo so in that sense they would be a waste.
I'm sure you could resell them for a decent amount though...
