Delivery date supposed to be 18 Nov. Looks like a Saturday install and a trip to Dynolab if they are open and not busy. If it fits as well as the Amemiya did, it'll be quick work plus Track Addict said he wants to help. Two sets of hands can be most helpful in the event of a poor fit since 4 hammers make it fit better than 2!

Hey Charlie let me know if the Saturday install happens. I may come up. Have you considered thermal wrap?
And my 8 has never been dyno'ed! It's not really ready for a dyno run but what the hey. I ordered my suspenion from dpe and maybe you can give me a few pointer while your car is on the rack on the driveway install.
I am still setting on the side of the road--- but I guess I better get of my butt and come to where you are!

Oh yeah, I just got back from AMS tonight after 10 laps in a cup car with Racing Experience.com! 165 mph...... It's a TRIP, definately have even more respect for the Cup drivers especially on a road circuit. It was a really great time and a helluva birthday gift from my brother. And... it was under the lights of AMS! I remember Charlotte in the GT3 car and thinking that it would really be interesting to know what it would feel like with 400 or so more hp and 1500 lbs more weight.
Now I know! I think adrenaline is still my favorite drug of choice!!

Ok Goober,
You definite have the bug! Has your heart rate gotten under 100 after you think about it ? Lol, Love it. I imagine that you have to react a little faster! 4 point restraints do work better also!
Oh by the way the wife wants to travel with me on Saturday if the install is done. -----------------------------------------------Don't worry she has an ex customer of yours and old college roomate meeting us and the girls will then leave! I keep the credit card.
Hope this works out. Me keeping the credit card I mean.

those aren't air injection holes, they are simply machined out areas to lighten the flange while still retaining it's sealing stiffness

Well i am just the tiniest bit sore around my neck today, OD! Imagine that and still smiling. I sure hope that UPS shows up with the header on Friday and that we can all get together. Call me late Friday afternoon for updates. See you soon.

Well, it got here today and although the build quality is nice, there is one realllllly big problem. It ain't gonna pass smog as there is no air injection. I think someone else had noticed the gasket not being cut for the air ports but I didn't think the header flange had not been machined for it. The Amemiya piece I tested was completely fitted up for air injction so I guess I mistakenly thought the OBX would be too.

I guess my Saturday plans just got freed up. I am not going to install this for the time being.

So the rx8 has air injection through the stock exhaust manifold? Hmm, I'm curious if that means putting the header on, with a high flow cat, would eventually cause the cat to die. If that's the case, I might just get a resonated midpipe rather than high flow cat, and put the stock midpipe back on for emissions testing.

How does the air injection system on the rx8 work exactly? I don't know much about the emissions system on it yet as I haven't investigated.

yep , M8 is right. Look at page 14 and compare the pictures. Obvious no drilled air pump holes only an indention. I spoke with Charlie today and as the picture suggest this will not be an easy fix.
Damn.

I am going to bump the question: Is a high flow cat after an obx header going to make it for long without the air pump?

M8. You want to get rid of your header?

Nah , I don't want to get rid of it yet. I am going to speak with a pal with a machine shop and see if it can't be gundrilled and opened up as well as tapped for studs for the air pipe to bolt up. He's got cnc multi axis mills so I hope it can be done and then weld up the access holes. Definately aint gonna happen on the workbench at my shop.

Having had the Amemiya header and now the OBX, it really is not a bad looking piece other than the fact that it is not finished!

Sorry that it is not going on and getting tested this weekend but I'll post up when I have news.

Sorry I didn't answer about the hiflow cat. Basically I "think" that without air injection the cat won't light off enough to actually clean the exhaust emissions. This being said, the cat not getting air "should" hold up ok since the air won't pump into it and heat it. Think about it like fan the coals in a fire and how quickly they light off and burn away. If left alone they will just not get as hot and will eventually burn out.

Hope this helps.

I'm just going to run a catless midpipe with the header I guess. I don't see why people think it cannot pass emissions with the header, though. Some states only plug into the OBD system and look for codes, don't even use a sniffer or visual, and for those states I think it'd be quite easy to pass if you just put in the stock midpipe/cat for the test.

Otherwise, even with the sniffer, I don't see it as being impossible. You just have to know how to get around things and kind of "tune" for emissions day (once again changing things for only 1 day, not running it like this all year). I had to go through a lot of that with my 2nd gen rx7 when I first got it and needed to pass. I was able to pass with it having zero emissions equipment except for a high flow cat. Anything is possible

air is only injected in certain situations for emissions purposes, it should not affect the cat converter life. I would also refrain from saying that it will not pass emissions. It just depends.

btw, I posted the lack of air injection info several days ago in this same thread .. I probably wasn't clear enough

Interesting. So a high flow cat should be able to remain in alright condition without any air injection? Good to know, it'll help quiet down the exhaust more than a resonated midpipe, plus no CEL.

A cat would have absolutely no effect on whether you pass an emissions test or not as long as you still have a cat. The only thing it would fail is a visual inspection in certain states.

You sound very certain of this RG. Imyself have not tested my theory but I "think" from past experience that the the tailpipe emissions w/o air will be excessive. You seem awfully quick on the draw with your answers even though you have nothing to back it up.

I have spent a great deal of time and money testing different products both on the street and the dyno so that we can all benefit from either buying or staying away from bolt on accessories. I choose not to post up on every subject unless I have something of value to add to the discussion. You seem to have a lot of spare time on your hands. Why not use it for something constructive?

Dude, keep it civil! youRG And expect a long, detailed, Fact filled reply. I would be disappointed with less.

I understand. Thanks for replying. Good luck on the machining. I hope it works out for you. BTW, I "ordered" the header today via other means today, anyway! Cant wait.
